This is what Coach Jim Harbaugh was talking about on the upcoming HBO Real Sports feature when he recalled how former Michigan QB Rick Leach would break the huddle, walk to the line of scrimmage, lick his fingers, survey the defense, adjust his shoulder pads, take the snap from center and run the option back in the late 1970's. As a teenager growing up in the midwest and following college football, NOTHING was cooler than watching the Guts and Glue of the Maize and Blue lead Michigan to victory after victory. Enjoy!

January 1, 1979 (Pasadena, CA) - Legendary University of Michigan Radio Broadcaster Bob Ufer calls All-American quarterback Rick Leach's 44-yard touchdown pass to running back Roosevelt Smith in the 1979 Rose Bowl Game against the USC Trojans. The touchdown set an NCAA Record for Leach as he accounted for 82 TD's in his Wolverine career from 1975-78. Even though Michigan would lose 17-10 on a Charles White Phantom Touchdown, Leach would share the 1979 Rose Bowl MVP honors with White.

In what I believe was the first time a current Michigan Football player appeared on Michigan Replay, quarterback Rick Leach talks about the how the 1977 Michigan season went and how much the Wolverines were looking forward to another opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl. Bo joked that it was Leach who wanted to run the ball more and how it was Bo who wanted to throw the ball. Schembechler went on to assert that, in his opinion, Leach was the best quarterback in the country because of everything the Michigan coaching staff asked of their signal-caller.

November 25, 1978 (Columbus, OH) - Michigan quarterback Rick Leach celebrates his (then) NCAA Record 38th victory as a Michigan quarterback after defeating Ohio State, 14-3. Leach would also be the first NCAA quarterback to run AND pass for over 2,000 yards in a career as well as being the first NCAA player to score over 200 points rushing AND passing.
