Doménikos Theotokópoulos (Greek: Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος [ðoˈminikos θeotoˈkopulos], 1541 – 7 April 1614), most widely known as El Greco (pronounced: [el ˈgɾeko]; Spanish for "The Greek"), was a painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. The nickname "El Greco" refers both to his Greek origin and Spanish citizenship. The artist normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters, Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος (Doménikos Theotokópoulos), often adding the word Κρής (Krēs, "Cretan").
El Greco was born in Crete, which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done. In 1570 he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. In Toledo, El Greco received several major commissions and produced his best-known paintings.
Sotiris Moustakas (Greek: Σωτήρης Μουστάκας) (17 September 1940 – 4 June 2007) was a Greek Cypriot comedy actor.
He was born in Limassol, Cyprus.
One of the most significant comic actors of Greece and Cyprus, Moustakas graduated from the National Theater of Greece and was known for his portrayal of offbeat, neurotic yet likable characters. In many of his movies he portrayed multiple roles. He appeared primarily in modern films and plays, although he also performed several roles in classical works.
Moustakas' international film debut came in 1964 in the Oscar-winning Zorba the Greek starring Anthony Quinn, in which he played Mimithos, the village idiot.
Although his recent work was mainly in the theatre, he also had a role in the 2007 film El Greco.
Although not widely advertised, Moustakas in his youth was involved in the Greek Cypriot national liberation struggle of EOKA against British colonialism, acting as a messenger, and writing political graffiti. During that period, he was arrested by the British and spent 7 months in jail.
Juan Diego Botto-Rota (born August 29, 1975, in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an Argentine-Spanish actor.
Botto's father disappeared during the Argentine Dirty War when Juan Diego was only two years old. With his mother and older sister María, also an actress, he moved to Madrid, Spain, where he currently resides.
Botto started acting at the age of 5 in the film Juego de poder (Power Game). His role in the 1999 film Sobreviviré (I will survive), about a woman who falls in love with a man who, unknown to her, is homosexual, got him more national and international recognition.
Botto has appeared on stage in Spain in several critically acclaimed plays. He also directed a play called Privilegio de ser perro (Privilege of Being a Dog), about the tough life immigrants are subjected to while trying to sneak into and live in a new country.
Currently Botto lives in Madrid with his partner, the Spanish journalist and writer Olga Rodriguez. He is also active in politics, protesting the 2003 war in Iraq taking part in a support group for fellow children of the disappeared.
Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin also known as Juan Diegotzil (1474–1548), a native of Mexico, is the first Roman Catholic indigenous saint from the Americas. He is said to have been granted an apparition of the Virgin Mary on four separate occasions in December 1531 at the hill of Tepeyac, then outside but now well within metropolitan Mexico City.
The Basilica of Guadalupe located at the foot of the hill of Tepeyac claims to possess Juan Diego's mantle or cloak (known as a tilma) on which an image of the Virgin is said to have been impressed by a miracle as a pledge of the authenticity of the apparitions. These apparitions and the imparting of the miraculous image (together known as the Guadalupe event, in Spanish "el acontecimiento Guadalupano") are the basis of the cult of Our Lady of Guadalupe which is ubiquitous in Mexico, prevalent throughout the Spanish-speaking Americas, and increasingly widespread beyond. As a result, the Basilica of Guadalupe is now the world's major centre of pilgrimage for Roman Catholics, receiving 22 million visitors in 2010, the vast bulk of whom were pilgrims. Juan Diego was beatified in 1990, and canonized in 2002.
