It is an amazing historical phenomenon that no ayah (verse/sign) of the Qur'an has been commented on more than ayat An-Nūr (The verse of light).
In fact, it would be true to say that the vast majority of booklets that have been written on the Tafsir (exegesis) of the Qur'an are based on the exposition of ayat An-Nūr.
Over the past 14 centuries of Islamic Scholarship, more than a hundred treatises alone have been written on this one verse of the Qur'an by Scholars from every era.
Why is this verse so special that it is the most oft-commented verse in our Islamic heritage?
In this short video Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi sheds light on the meaning and profundity of this one verse that is famously known as ayat An-Nūr (The verse of light).

Tafsir
Tafsir (Arabic: تفسير, translit. Tafsīr, Meaning: interpretation) is the Arabic word for exegesis, usually of the Qur'an. An author of tafsir is a mufassir (Arabic: مُفسر, mufassir, plural: Arabic: مفسرون, mufassirūn). A Quranic tafsir will often explain content and provide places and times, not contained in Quranic verses, as well as give the different views and opinions of scholars on the verse.
Etymology
The word tafsīr is derived from the Arabic root, F-S-R which means to explain, to expound, to disclose. In Islamic contexts, it is defined as understanding and uncovering the Will of Allah which has been conveyed by the Qur'anic text, by means of the Arabic language and one’s own knowledge. In fact, it would be true to say that the vast majority of booklets that have been written on the Tafsir (exegesis) of the Qur'an are based on the exposition of ayat An-Nūr.
