William Barnes (22 February 1801 – 7 October 1886) was an English writer, poet, Church of England priest, and philologist. He wrote over 800 poems, some in Dorset dialect, and much other work, including a comprehensive English grammar quoting from more than 70 different languages.
Barnes was born at Rushay in the parish of Bagber, Dorset, the son of a farmer. His formal education finished when he was 13 years old. Between 1818 and 1823 he worked in Dorchester, the county town, as a solicitor's clerk, then moved to Mere in neighbouring Wiltshire and opened a school. During his time here he began writing poetry in the Dorset dialect, as well as studying several languages (Italian, Persian, German and French, in addition to Greek and Latin), playing musical instruments (violin, piano and flute) and practising wood-engraving. He married Julia Miles, the daughter of an exciseman from Dorchester, in 1827, then in 1835 moved back to the county town, where again he ran a school. The school was initially in Durngate Street, then was moved to South Street. A second move to another South Street site made the school a neighbour of an architect's practice where Thomas Hardy was an apprentice. The architect, John Hicks, was interested in literature and the classics, and when disputes about grammar occurred in the practice, Hardy would visit Barnes next door for an authoritative opinion.
John Stanton Shirley-Quirk CBE (28 August 1931 – 7 April 2014) was an English bass-baritone. A member of the English Opera Group during 1964–76, he gave premiere performances of several operatic and vocal works by Benjamin Britten, recording these and other works under the composer's direction. He also sang and recorded a wide range of works by other composers, ranging from Handel through Tchaikovsky to Henze.
Shirley-Quirk was born in Liverpool and sang in the choir at Holt High School (today the Childwall Sports & Science Academy). He played the violin and was awarded a scholarship. While studying chemistry and physics at Liverpool University, he studied voice with Austen Carnegie. Shirley-Quirk was a lecturer in chemistry at Acton Technical College until 1957 and played a part in events leading to the formation of Brunel University. In that period he resumed his vocal studies with Roy Henderson. According to Imogen Holst, it was during this period while "earning his living as a schoolmaster" that Shirley-Quirk joined the Purcell Singers, performing at the Aldeburgh Festival. He was a lay-clerk at St Paul's Cathedral 1961–62.

Plot: Chapter 15: "The Living Death" - Chapter 14 ends with the floating hand writing a message to John Spencer and Polly Marion that all would be made clear in next week's episode. Tom and Polly watch fascinated as the dis-embodied Hand writes (in flashback scenes, mostly.) Cronin and Professor Duvam wait in an adjoining room. The Hand writes that it (he) was a member of "The Black Seven," a psychical and scientific research group in Paris and, because other scientists considered them crazy owing to their advanced theories, they and their meetings were kept secret. Five of these men were the victims of "The Voice" (also dis-embodied) in previous chapters, the sixth was Dr. Reynolds and the seventh was Emil LaRoux. The latter, not content, with proving astral bodies could be projected, was also convinced he could recall a soul at will, providing that the body in which the soul had lived on earth was preserved by a certain ancient process. The other members were convinced that no one would consent to being mummified alive. But LaRoux learned that he could easily dominate the will of Reynolds' wife, Irene. He told five of the members he had found his subject for the experiment. The one he didn't tell was Reynolds. A year later, deep in the heart of the African jungle on an expedition and in Reynold's absence, LaRoux made Irene his experiment victim, and left the camp with her mummified body and her infant child. In pursuit, Reynolds found LaRoux's dead body in the desert sand, with a note in his hand saying he had sent Irene's mummified body back to civilization to the five members not on the expedition and the baby son was to be the channeled means of communication with her in what LaRoux called "The Living Death". That night Reynold's was bitten by a snake and his servant cut off his hand to save his life. Later, a human arm was grafted to Reynolds' body and he discovered when his astral body was projected, only the missing hand was visible. He now had his method of revenge.

This song was recorded at the end of April, 2017 as part of a class project for Sound Recording Technology students at UMass Lowell. At the request of the students in my class I assembled a band of faculty members, plus an alumnus, for them to record and produce. While offering students an opportunity to hone their recording studio skills and work with four music faculty members from different programs, this project also gave me the opportunity to not only play with great musicians and colleagues, but also to try out some harmonica arrangement ideas I’d been mulling over for a few years…. I have long been curious about how it would sound to cover classic songs and replace all of the original wind and horn parts with harmonicas. On this session the brass and baritone sax parts (as played o...

What does a collector look for in a Ferrari? This issue, we learn the answer to this and other fascinating questions from Prancing Horse collector Jon Shirley whose cars include the 1954 375 MM Scaglietti Coupé that won Best of Show at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance at the exclusive Carmel golf club last August. “All Ferraris are marvellous,” says Shirley, “but the ones I like have a backstory that makes them unique. It could be because of victories on the track or famous previous owners, as is the case with the 375 Scaglietti Coupé that won at Pebble Beach and once belonged to the great director, Roberto Rossellini”. Shirley also told us he likes driving his Ferraris on both road and track. He revealed too that, over the years, the classic cars have not only proved to b...
Bone China is a type of porcelain, difficult to master due to the composition of bone ash (from where it gets its name) Feldspar and Kaolin. The clay is non plastic and mostly unstable in the kiln but highly translucent. The best way to form bowls is by slip casting it in plaster of Paris molds. John Shirley is a South African ceramic artist that not only creates paper thin Bone China vessels, but achieves beautiful vibrant colors with his experimentation of water soluble metal salts. Ceramic artists like Gary Holt from the USA and Arne Åse from Norway are among the few that work in this medium.

Note: should SAGA or Heritage Records take issue with my upload here, I'll immediately remove it. I've always loved this song and here, Heritage Records have done a first-rate job of re-mastering the late John Shirley-Quirk's pretty much definitive performance (among many other works on the Album - see below) from the original SAGA Records tapes recorded in the 1960's. Here's what Heritage Records say about the entire project: "As a tribute to the late John Shirley-Quirk (1931 - 2014), Heritage is proud to re-issue the recordings he made of English song for the SAGA label in the 1960s. Three LPs were originally laid down – Songs of Travel, A Recital of English Song and The Songs of John Ireland – and they appear here as a double CD. The performances are considered by many to be defini...

The 4th Armored Division of the United States Army was an armored division that compiled a distinguished career in the European theater of World War II. Unlike many other World War II U.S. armored divisions, the 4th never adopted an official divisional nickname or slogan. Legend says their unofficial nickname came to be when the original commander, traditionally permitted to nickname a unit, replied that "Fourth Armored Division" was "Name Enough". The division was activated on 15 April 1941 by cadre of the 1st Armored Division, and was fitted out as a full armored division in 1942 under the command of Major General John S. Wood. The 4th AD deployed to the United Kingdom in early 1944 in preparation for the invasion of France. After training in England from January to July 1944, the 4th A...
