Teardown of a really, really Chinese LCD projector. The LED exploded after only a few thousand hours of use, and sadly it wasn't worth fixing due to a number of factors, most notably money, but also the severe lack of electrical safety in the power supply. SPOILER ALERT: It isn't going back together. I'm sorry to DISABLE COMMENTS on this video, but they've degraded to nothing short of a constant shit-flinging where I keep having to address the same increasingly rude comment several times a day. Here's the rundown: Comment: You should have fixed the projector, a new LED is cheap and it's worth it. Answer: Projector LEDs are relatively expensive since the market for super high colour temperature LEDs is small; you can't use a $10 6500K LED, but you need to use a $30 20 000K LED. The stock LED was also a 8-die series module whereas most are 10-die series, which made it hard to find. The PSU would not drive a 10-die LED. After Finnish import taxes, we're looking at a $50 LED at the time of this video. This alone was more than the entire repair budget. Comment: The power connector is safely mounted. Answer: Yes it is, that was my mistake. Comment: There's nothing wrong with disconnecting the ground on a double-insulated device. Answer: True, but a 2-prong power connector needs to be used to show this. If a 3-prong connector is used, the ground should be utilised to provide a return path in case of failure. Comment: The projector is not a death trap. Answer: That is incorrect; the ceramic 0805 capacitors used as primary-secondary suppression capacitors often fail short. They are not suitable for the application, since the connectors on the back of the device would become live at mains voltage if one of those capacitors failed. Primary-secondary isolation is also not adequate. Comment: Starving children in Africa could have eaten that projector.
