Queen Elizabeth declares the cornerstone "well and truly laid" and addresses her subjects - the narrator paraphrases her speech. The Queen states that it is appropriate for a woman to perform this task as women's place in civilised society has been dependent on the growth of law. Also speaks of the union of British and French in Canada being similar to the unity of races in the United Kingdom. Minister of Justice thanks the Queen. Also present are the Governor General Lord Tweedsmuir - who is the novelist John Buchan and the Right Honourable Mackenzie King - the Prime Minister. The King and Queen have a "walkabout" mingling amongst the veterans. (Very emotional narration about the love and loyalty of the ex-soldiers). Veterans march past with banners. The royal train leaves. Note: British narrator. Very patriotic tone. Lots of cheering and rousing music on soundtrack. World Garden 1941 - The Botanical Gardens at Kew
The public walk through the grounds of Kew Gardens and enjoy the flowers. Meanwhile, serious botanical research is conducted behind the scenes. Details Release year1942 DirectorRobin Carruthers Production companySpectator CinematographerGeoffrey Unsworth ComposerJack Beaver NarrationCharles Lefeaux Sound recordingW.S. Bland Running time (minutes)11 mins 02 secs Original Description The Botanical Gardens at Kew 'A picture of springtime in Kew Gardens, of daffodils, bluebells, cherry blossom, of those exotic flowers from the tropics, the Andes, the Himalayas. In these lovely surroundings, Londoners find peace and serenity, while their children play. Rare plants are classified in the Herbarium; crop growers throughout the world are aided in their battle against pests and disease by Kew research.' (Films of Britain - British Council Film Department Catalogue - 1942-43) Trivia World Garden is one of the earliest films shot by renowned Technicolor cameraman Geoffrey Unsworth. He would go on to be in charge of cinematography on such well-known titles as 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Cabaret (1972). When the British Council Film Committee first considered making World Garden in colour, there was some debate as to whether to use Dufaycolor or Technicolor. In the end they chose Technicolor, not just because it was "unquestionably the best system", but because they felt it would give them an advantage over German and Italian productions, who were apparently unable to use the American Technicolor process because they were at war with America. Sir Geoffrey Evans, Director of Kew Gardens from 1941 to 1943, can be seen in the scene where grafting is demonstrated. 4 min, 35 mm Dufaycolour, sound Music: Beguine d'Amour by Don Baretto and his Cuban Orchestra Synchronisation: Jack Ellitt Producer: Gerald Noxon Sponsor: Imperial Tobacco Company First screening: 27 October 1935, London Film Society Another 'direct' film synchronised to music by Don Baretto and his Cuban Orchestra. Lye experimented with new forms of 'direct film' imagery, with the help of stencils. The film was sponsored as a prestige advertisement for Churchman's Cigarettes. For the first screening of the film, Lye cut the cigarette shapes out of the print, so that the light would project directly through them onto the screen.- published: 18 May 2014

Len Lye - A Colour Box (1935)
4 min, 35mm Dufaycolour, sound Music: La Belle Créole by Don Baretto and his Cuban Orchestra Synchronisation: Jack Ellitt Producer: John Grierson Sponsor: GPO Film Unit First screening: 6 September 1935 The first of Lye's 'direct films' to receive a public screening. Promoted by Sidney Bernstein's Granada chain of cinemas, it eventually came to be seen "by a larger public than any experimental film before it, and most since" (as the film historian David Curtis has pointed out). Its soundtrack is a beguine - a dance popular in France during the 1930s. A Colour Box won a Medal of Honour at the 1935 International Cinema Festival in Brussels. Having no suitable category in which to award the film, the jury simply invented a new one.- published: 18 May 2014

Sports Meeting (1932)
No title. L/S of a sports arena with a road running through it. A woman with large boned skirt rides a stunt bicycle - she is sitting very high on the bike with her skirt billowing out. Cars follow. L/S of small stock racing cars travelling around a racing track. This may be a race for hand built vehicles or something similar. L/S of a motorcycle moving off down the track away from the camera. There are lots of signs around the track advertising the Ford Motor Company and Dunlop. This showground is presumably in America. High angle shot of car exhibition. Sign over an archway is the Ford logo. Lots of people mill around looking at the cars on display. Camera tilts up to show size of crowd and display of vehicles. Short shot of an advert for a "Fordson cwt Van". M/S of car racing towards the camera on the race track. The car is then reversed around some barrels. Low angle shot of spectators standing behind a fence. Note: Julian has identified this as Dufaycolour. It is very difficult to date this film. Perhaps a car expert could do it! Safety Dufaycolour print only. 90,000 historic films, all SEARCHABLE on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/britishpathe Join us on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/britishpathe Tweet us @britishpathe FILM ID:1036.01- published: 13 Apr 2014
