Today we look at CRT monitors like this and think back to the 90s or early 2000’s. To some of us, TVs like these are long forgotten parts of our childhood. What you might not have realized is that CRTs are far from dead. With over 10% of American households still using CRT TVs and production being ramped up for developing countries it’s safe to say that these will be a part of many people’s lives for a long time. In America, studies have shown that some millennial are buying CRTs for the novelty and nostalgia factor. For some, it’s refreshing to experience the high refresh rates, true black tones, and lack of latency that LCDs still cannot offer. Much like vinyl records made a comeback CRTs might be the next retro thing. So let’s see, do CRTs still have a purpose in the modern day? Or are they simply a relic from the past only kept alive by blind nostalgia.

Тестовата игра е CS Source (Counter Strike Source), а не първия CS, защото за разлика от него Source-а може да се възползва от 120-те херца, докато нормалния Counter Strike е ограничен до 100 кадъра в секунда. В опциите на играта е активиран v-sync, за да се избегне възможността от "разкъсване" на образа в кадрите, който обикновено може да бъде забелязан при наличието на различаващ се брой кадри, обработвани от видеокартата спрямо честотата на опресняване. За да може да видите разликата е препоръчително да гледате видеото в HD версия и да използвате бутона за пауза в ключови моменти при бързо движение на обектите върху екрана. Резултатите от двата монитора са почти идентични, тоест 120-херцовото LCD се представя не по-лошо от CRT екран, но идва с някои важни предимства подобрена яркост, контраст, цветово възпроизвеждане и т.н. Малко по-късно ще публикувам и стоп кадри с пълната Full HD резолюция на видеото за по-детайлно сравнение на резултатите, като единствената разлика е наличието на съвсем малко по-висок input lag при LCD-то, което не е неочаквано.

Cathode ray tube
The cathode ray tube (CRT) is a vacuum tube containing one or more electron guns, and a phosphorescent screen used to view images. It has a means to accelerate and deflect the electron beam(s) onto the screen to create the images. The images may represent electrical waveforms (oscilloscope), pictures (television, computer monitor), radar targets or others. CRTs have also been used as memory devices, in which case the visible light emitted from the fluorescent material (if any) is not intended to have significant meaning to a visual observer (though the visible pattern on the tube face may cryptically represent the stored data).
The CRT uses an evacuated glass envelope which is large, deep (i.e. long from front screen face to rear end), fairly heavy, and relatively fragile. As a matter of safety, the face is typically made of thick lead glass so as to be highly shatter-resistant and to block most X-ray emissions, particularly if the CRT is used in a consumer product.
Since 2008, CRTs have largely been superseded by newer display technologies such as LCD, plasma display, and OLED, which have lower manufacturing costs, power consumption, weight and bulk.

While in town today, I walked back to the thirft shop where I found the 17" NEC and 15" COMPAQ monitors (featured in a video) a while back. The shop had four more monitors out the back (including a 17" LG Studioworks and three 14" CRT monitors). This one was set up and connected to a computer, though wasn't in use. I swapped it our for a newer 15" monitor, and payed $5 for it! For more in it, look out for my future videos for it, which I am in the process of filming and uploading. -

I have heard a lot of bad things about eBay's Global Shipping Programme... I had been wanting an Acorn CRT monitor to compliment my Acorn RISC PC... collection is not complete without original branded accessories I say! This of course meant, it was going to be coming from the UK, meaning there really was not much options at all. That being said, I decided to risk it, and gave it a fair go. I must say I am very pleased that not only did it arrive okay, but that rather large, heavy & fragile items are possible through GSP! It is heaps cheaper then courier options. Reckon it is still crazy I spent over £100 on a CRT monitor, but a collector does what a collector must do! Very happy with this Acorn AKF65 unit *^_^* Much thanks to the trader on eBay who offered this - Safe arrival starts with a trader who packs the item well! -

My New (old) 14" CRT monitor
While in town today, I walked back to the thirft shop where I found the 17" NEC and 15" COMPAQ monitors (featured in a video) a while back. The shop had four more monitors out the back (including a 17" LG Studioworks and three 14" CRT monitors). This one was set up and connected to a computer, though wasn't in use. I swapped it our for a newer 15" monitor, and payed $5 for it! For more in it, look out for my future videos for it, which I am in the process of filming and uploading.

Bought an Acorn CRT monitor on eBay via Global Shipping Programme - The results?
I have heard a lot of bad things about eBay's Global Shipping Programme... I had been wanting an Acorn CRT monitor to compliment my Acorn RISC PC... collection is not complete without original branded accessories I say! This of course meant, it was going to be coming from the UK, meaning there really was not much options at all. That being said, I decided to risk it, and gave it a fair go. I must say I am very pleased that not only did it arrive okay, but that rather large, heavy & fragile items are possible through GSP! It is heaps cheaper then courier options. Reckon it is still crazy I spent over £100 on a CRT monitor, but a collector does what a collector must do! Today we look at CRT monitors like this and think back to the 90s or early 2000’s. To some of us, TVs like these are long forgotten parts of our childhood. What you might not have realized is that CRTs are far from dead. With over 10% of American households still using CRT TVs and production being ramped up for developing countries it’s safe to say that these will be a part of many people’s lives for a long time. In America, studies have shown that some millennial are buying CRTs for the novelty and nostalgia factor. For some, it’s refreshing to experience the high refresh rates, true black tones, and lack of latency that LCDs still cannot offer. Much like vinyl records made a comeback CRTs might be the next retro thing. So let’s see, do CRTs still have a purpose in the modern day? Or are they simply a relic from the past only kept alive by blind nostalgia.

While in town today, I walked back to the thirft shop where I found the 17" NEC and 15" COMPAQ monitors (featured in a video) a while back. The shop had four more monitors out the back (including a 17" LG Studioworks and three 14" CRT monitors). This one was set up and connected to a computer, though wasn't in use. I swapped it our for a newer 15" monitor, and payed $5 for it!

I have heard a lot of bad things about eBay's Global Shipping Programme... I had been wanting an Acorn CRT monitor to compliment my Acorn RISC PC... collection ...
I have heard a lot of bad things about eBay's Global Shipping Programme... I had been wanting an Acorn CRT monitor to compliment my Acorn RISC PC... collection is not complete without original branded accessories I say! This of course meant, it was going to be coming from the UK, meaning there really was not much options at all.
That being said, I decided to risk it, and gave it a fair go. I must say I am very pleased that not only did it arrive okay, but that rather large, heavy & fragile items are possible through GSP! It is heaps cheaper then courier options.
Reckon it is still crazy I spent over £100 on a CRT monitor, but a collector does what a collector must do! Very happy with this Acorn AKF65 unit *^_^*
Much thanks to the trader on eBay who offered this - Safe arrival starts with a trader who packs the item well!
