Antoine Henri Becquerel (15 December 1852 – 25 August 1908) was a French physicist, Nobel laureate, and the discoverer of radioactivity, for work in this field he, along with Marie Skłodowska-Curie and Pierre Curie, received the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics. The SI unit for radioactivity, the becquerel (Bq), is named after him.
Marie Skłodowska-Curie (7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934) was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person (and only woman) to win twice, the only person to win twice in multiple sciences, and was part of the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris, and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris.

Radioactivity refers to the particles which are emitted from nuclei as a result of nuclear instability. Because the nucleus experiences the intense conflict between the two strongest forces in nature, it should not be surprising that there are many nuclear isotopes which are unstable and emit some kind of radiation.

Garson portrays the young Polish physics student Marie, who soon falls in love with and marries Dr. Pierre Curie (Pidgeon), in whose lab she had worked. On their honeymoon they decide to investigate a strange effect Professor Becquerel (Reginald Owen) has noticed with the uranium/thorium stones for Marie's dissertation, and they determine there must be additional radioactive elements causing it. After years of experimentation in a makeshift lab at the University, they are finally able to isolate a few grains of a new element, radium, from 7 tons of raw material. Unfortunately, at the height of their success, tragedy strikes. The grand success of Madame Curie continued Garson's winning streak as one of the biggest box-office stars of the 1940s.

Born in Paris, France, Pierre was the son of Dr. Eugène Curie (28 August 1827 – 25 February 1910)' and Sophie-Claire Depouilly Curie (15 January 1832 – 27 September 1897). He was educated by his father, and in his early teens showed a strong aptitude for mathematics and geometry. When he was 16, he earned his math degree. By the age of 18 he had completed the equivalent of a higher degree, but did not proceed immediately to a doctorate due to lack of money. Instead he worked as a laboratory instructor.
In 1880, Pierre and his older brother Jacques (1856–1941) demonstrated that an electric potential was generated when crystals were compressed, i.e. piezoelectricity. To aid their work, they invented the Piezoelectic Quartz Electrometer. Shortly afterwards, in 1881, they demonstrated the reverse effect: that crystals could be made to deform when subject to an electric field. Almost all digital electronic circuits now rely on this in the form of crystal oscillators.

She shared her 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with her husband Pierre Curie and with the physicist Henri Becquerel. Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (born October 25, 1984), known by her stage name Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter and actress. Plot: Biopic of the famed scientist and the work she did with her husband Pierre in the discovery of radium. Marie was a student at the Sorbonne studying for her Master's degree in physics when they first met. She received permission to use space in Professor Pierre Curie's laboratory. They soon fall in love and are married, working together on trying to isolate a radioactive substance Marie has identified as radium. Years of painstaking research and experimentation led to success and Marie and Pierre Curie shared the Nobel Prize in Physics. Sadly, Pierre was killed crossing the street in the rain when he was run over by a horse and wagon. Marie continued to work and make major contributions to science.

asymptotic analysis for the case of large parameters in theory of the
Ginzburg-Landau equation. She established precisely, with Etienne Sandier, the values of the first critical fields for nucleation of vortices in superconductors, as well as the leading and next to leading order effective energies that govern the location of these vortices and their arrangement in Abrikosov lattices In micromagnetics, her work with F. Alouges and T. Rivière breaks new ground on singularly perturbed variational problems and provides the first explanation for the internal structure of cross-tie walls.

Reçu major à Polytechnique et à l'ENS, Pierre-Louis Lions entre à l'École normale supérieure (Paris) en 1975. Refusant de passer l'agrégation de mathématiques, il préfère se consacrer à la recherche en mathématiques appliquées et obtient son doctorat, dirigé par Haïm Brézis, en 1979 à l'Université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie. De 1979 à 1981, il poursuit ses recherches au CNRS puis devient professeur à l'université de Paris-Dauphine. Pierre-Louis Lions est professeur de mathématiques appliquées à l'École polytechnique depuis 1992 et professeur invité au Conservatoire national des arts et métiers en 2000. Il est nommé professeur au Collège de France en 2002, où il est titulaire de la chaire « Équations aux dérivées partielles et applications ».
Les travaux mathématiques de Pierre-Louis Lions portent sur la théorie des équations différentielles partielles non linéaires. On lui doit notamment un travail conjoint avec M. G. Crandall sur les solutions de viscosité des équations de Hamilton-Jacobi, des avancées sur l'équation de Boltzmann et l'équation de Navier-Stokes, et le très célèbre principe de concentration-compacité. Depuis 2006, les travaux de Pierre-Louis Lions, ainsi que ses cours au Collège de France, portent sur la théorie des jeux à champ moyen qu'il a développée avec Jean-Michel Lasry.
En septembre 2006, il a été nommé membre du Haut conseil de la science et de la technologie.
En 2009, il est nommé président du conseil d'administration de l'École normale supérieure en remplacement du conseiller d'État Jean-Claude Mallet.
Il a encadré de nombreuses thèses dont celle de Cédric Villani, lauréat de la médaille Fields en 2010.
