The epic story of the golden years of American space exploration, told by the men who rode the rockets On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, and the space race was born. Desperate to beat the Russians into space, NASA put together a crew of the nation's most daring test pilots: the seven men who were to lead America to the moon. The first into space was Alan Shepard; the last was Deke Slayton, whose irregular heartbeat kept him grounded until 1975. They spent the 1960s at the forefront of NASA's effort to conquer space, and Moon Shot is their inside account of what many call the twentieth century's greatest feat—landing humans on another world.

This NASA documentary from the early 1960's explains the steps that would need to be taken to place men on the moon and return them safely to earth, a feat first completed in 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission. The film opens with footage from early Project Mercury launches, then uses animation to explain the design concepts and features of the Saturn rockets, Apollo Command Module and Lunar Landing Module. In 2014 NASA celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. Note: any comments stating the moon landings were a hoax may be removed and user blocked. Project Apollo - NASSP (also known as NASSP or NCPP) is an add-on for the Orbiter space flight simulator. Project Apollo simulates the Apollo missions to Earth orbit and the Moon, and is slowly expanding to simulate planned post-Apollo missions that never flew. Project Apollo features a near-full implementation of the control panels in the Command Module and Lunar Module, and an increasingly accurate simulation of the internal systems (e.g. electrical distribution, fuel cells). Also the Virtual AGC software is supported, which allows you to run precisely the same on-board guidance software as used by the real Apollo Guidance Computer. This video shows the launch of Apollo 8 with the currently being developed simulation of the Launch Vehicle Digital Computer (LVDC++) and a Mode III Abort a...

This NASA technology video is structured to show the developments of all three NASA programs (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo) that lead the United States to the physical exploration of the Moon, which began when Luna 2, a space probe launched by the Soviet Union, made an impact on the surface of the Moon on September 14, 1959. Prior to that the only available means of exploration had been observation from Earth. The invention of the optical telescope brought about the first leap in the quality of lunar observations. Galileo Galilei is generally credited as the first person to use a telescope for astronomical purposes; having made his own telescope in 1609, the mountains and craters on the lunar surface were among his first observations using it. NASA's Apollo program was the first, and to date o...

This video is a recording of the Apollo Project Liftoff community meeting held at Orem High School on September 8, 2016. The Apollo Project is an initiative within Alpine School District to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to succeed in the 21st Century. Through the integration of STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), we build students’ abilities to problem solve, collaborate, innovate, and think critically. The Engineering Design Process is the vehicle that makes this initiative possible. The Engineering Design Process is a pattern for powerful creativity and problem solving that provides students with hands-on, minds-on experiences. Whether they are designing a water filtration system or a maglev train, the Engi...

The configuration of the Saturn C-5 (later Saturn-V) launch vehicle was determined in December 1961. "The Apollo spacecraft will consist of three modules: the manned Command Module; the Service Module, which contains propulsion systems; and the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) to carry astronauts to the moon and back to the Command and Service Modules. The spacecraft will be launched via a three-stage Saturn booster. The first stage will provide 7.5 milli...

INFO: The Apollo program, also known as Project Apollo, was the third United States human spaceflight program carried out by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which accomplished landing the first humans on the Moon from 1969 to 1972. First conceived during Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration as a three-man spacecraft to follow the one-man Project Mercury which put the first Americans in space, Apollo was later dedicated to President John F. Kennedy's national goal of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth" by the end of the 1960s, which he proposed in an address to Congress on May 25, 1961. Kennedy's goal was accomplished on the Apollo 11 mission when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their Lunar Module (LM) on July 20, 19...
