How Nashville Got 'Music City' Nickname

By Kai Beech Nashville, Tennessee is commonly known as Music City USA. But how did Nashville get the nickname Music City? Many believe the moniker was given far away from Middle Tennessee when the Fisk Jubilee Singers performed in Europe. "That when they sang in front of Queen Victoria she was so impressed that she said, you people must come from a music city,'" said Fisk Jubilee Singers musical director Dr. Paul Kwami. "I loved to use that story but later on I found out that wasn't the truth. Instead it was said that some disc DJ's were playing in studio one morning and came up with that name." Despite not being responsible for the name Music City, Dr. Kwami believes the Fisk Jubilee Singers did help put Nashville on the map as a multicultural music mecca. And it's the type of diversity that attracted legendary bluesman Gil Gann to Nashville. "What do they call America? A melting pot," Gann said. "Music City is a melting pot." Often thought as the country music capital of the world, Gann said there's much more to Nashville's music scene than just honkey tonks. "The best of all the players from all over the country gravitate here," Gann said.
