When you think of tourism, Iraq does not probably jump to mind. Despite that there is a large Iraq booth at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2011 at Excel in London with a reasonable number of delegates in attendance. Because of this ASIA Travel Tips.com sat down with Fadhil Al-Saaegh , Managing Director of Al-Rafidain Co. Ltd., to ask why Iraq has spent so much to promote the country when from an outsiders perspective there seems to be so much trouble.
We ask whether it is safe, the status of tourism there at the moment, if there are any areas other than Baghdad that are attracting tourism and what the state of national monuments, treasures and other tourist sites are.
Numerous airlines have also started to resume flights to different destinations in Iraq such as Baghdad, Basra and others. ASIA Travel Tips.com asks what the country is doing to attract more airlines etc.

U-S congressional staffers have toured the port of Basra, Iraq's second-largest city, as part of a fact-finding mission on the impact of U-N sanctions.
They shook hands with barefoot and emaciated Iraqi children who have to walk through raw sewage to get to their houses in a low-income residential complex in the southern port city.
The delegates' week-long trip began last Saturday and also included a visit to the capital, Baghdad.
Iraqis say the U-N sanctions are taking their toll on the southern port city of Basra.
The city's residents live on meagre government rations and clean water is in short supply.
Iraqi officials blame the poor living conditions on the sanctions.
A U-N trade embargo was slapped on Iraq nine years ago to punish Baghdad for invading Kuwait in 1990.
American delegation, made up of congressional staffers, arrived in Iraq last Saturday to found out for themselves the impact the sanctions have on the people of the country.
On Thursday, they travelled south to Basra to witness the effect of sanctions on rural areas.
For some, it proved to be a harrowing experience.

"The notion that children have to walk through raw sewage to get in and out of their houses is an abomination and unacceptable and whatever the severity of causes that lead to it, it is not acceptable and it has to change. In my view the sanctions must be lifted to make any possibility of that change a real one, so these children do not have to walk through sewage to get in and out of their houses."

The week-long humanitarian fact-finding mission was partly organised by the anti-sanction group "Voices in The Wilderness", which is based in Chicago.
Its members have tirelessly campaigned to get the sanctions lifted.
"Voices in the Wilderness" has repeatedly defied U-S restrictions to bring thousands of
dollars worth of medicines to Iraq.
The U-S mission is controversial and has attracted fierce opposition from the U-S State Department, which claims the trip will be used for propaganda by President Saddam Hussein.
Given the controversy, some of the team remained understandably tight-lipped.

The U-S delegation also travelled to Ammara, 237 miles south of Baghdad.
Here, the group inspected the Saddam Hospital where mothers used manual fans to drive away flies from their malnourished babies.
Iraqi doctors told the delegates that two in every 10 children born in southern Iraq suffer from some kind of deformity.
Doctors blame the surge in deformities on the depleted uranium used in U-S and British tank-piercing shells during the Gulf War.
Southern Iraq was the main battlefield of Iraq's two wars, the 1980-1988 war with Iran and the 1991 Gulf War over Kuwait.

Basra (Arabic: البصرة; BGN: Al Baṣrah) is the capital of Basra Governorate, in southern Iraq near Kuwait and Iran. It had an estimated population of two million as of 2009. Basra is also Iraq's main port, although it does not have deep water access, which is handled at the port of Umm Qasr.
The city is part of the historic location of Sumer, the home of Sinbad the Sailor, and a proposed location of the Garden of Eden. It also played an important role in early Islamic history, being built in 636 CE, or 14 AH. It is Iraq's second largest and most populous city after Baghdad.
The city was called by many names throughout its history, Basrah being the most common. Although some Chaldean Christians argue that the name has Akkadian roots, other sources claim that the name is derived from the Persian word Bas-rah, which means "where many paths meet". During the pre-Islamic era, the area was known to the Arabs as al-Khariba due to the existence of an ancient city called al-Kharba. After the present city was built, it was called by many names, including "the mother of Iraq", "the reservoir of Arabs", "the prosperous city", and "al-Faiha".

U-S congressional staffers have toured the port of Basra, Iraq's second-largest city, as part of a fact-finding mission on the impact of U-N sanctions.
They shook hands with barefoot and emaciated Iraqi children who have to walk through raw sewage to get to their houses in a low-income residential complex in the southern port city.
The delegates' week-long trip began last Saturday and also included a visit to the capital, Baghdad.
Iraqis say the U-N sanctions are taking their toll on the southern port city of Basra.
The city's residents live on meagre government rations and clean water is in short supply.
Iraqi officials blame the poor living conditions on the sanctions.
A U-N trade embargo was slapped on Iraq nine years ago to punish Baghdad for invading Kuwait in 1990.
American delegation, made up of congressional staffers, arrived in Iraq last Saturday to found out for themselves the impact the sanctions have on the people of the country.
On Thursday, they travelled south to Basra to witness the effect of sanctions on rural areas.
For some, it proved to be a harrowing experience.

"The notion that children have to walk through raw sewage to get in and out of their houses is an abomination and unacceptable and whatever the severity of causes that lead to it, it is not acceptable and it has to change. In my view the sanctions must be lifted to make any possibility of that change a real one, so these children do not have to walk through sewage to get in and out of their houses."

The week-long humanitarian fact-finding mission was partly organised by the anti-sanction group "Voices in The Wilderness", which is based in Chicago.
Its members have tirelessly campaigned to get the sanctions lifted.
"Voices in the Wilderness" has repeatedly defied U-S restrictions to bring thousands of
dollars worth of medicines to Iraq.
The U-S mission is controversial and has attracted fierce opposition from the U-S State Department, which claims the trip will be used for propaganda by President Saddam Hussein.
Given the controversy, some of the team remained understandably tight-lipped.

Doctors blame the surge in deformities on the depleted uranium used in U-S and British tank-piercing shells during the Gulf War.
Southern Iraq was the main battlefield of Iraq's two wars, the 1980-1988 war with Iran and the 1991 Gulf War over Kuwait.
