James "Jimmy" Dorsey (February 29, 1904 – June 12, 1957) was a prominent American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, trumpeter, composer, and big band leader. He was known as "JD". He recorded and composed the jazz and pop standards "I'm Glad There Is You (In This World of Ordinary People)" and "It's The Dreamer In Me". His other major recordings were "Tailspin", "John Silver", "So Many Times", "Amapola", "Brazil (Aquarela do Brasil)", "Pennies from Heaven" with Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, and Frances Langford, "Grand Central Getaway", and "So Rare".

Jimmy Dorsey was a prominent American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, trumpeter and big band leader. Along with brother Tommy they formed the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, but split in 1935, each with his own band. He had numerous big hits in the 30s-50s, several featuring vocalists Bob Eberly and Helen O'Connell. In 1953 he again combined with Tommy Dorsey with the renamed band "The Fabulous Dorseys". His recording of So Rare, released in 1957, reached #2 on the Billboard chart. This selection, also released in 1957, was the flip side of June Night, which also hit the Billboard chart.

Lee Castle & The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra at Disneyland 1984. There is a break in the show resulting from a power failure when I originally recorded it. Fortunately it wasn't long and we don't miss much of this fine performance by Lee.
Growing up in a coal-mining community in Philadelphia, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey (playing themselves) are encouraged by their father, Thomas (Arthur Shields), to study music. The highly competitive siblings are soon playing with their father's band. As grown men, the Dorseys begin touring with their own ensemble, with childhood friend Jane Howard (Janet Blair) on vocals. Despite their rising success, the bickering brothers have a falling out, and Jane schemes to reconcile them.

Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with Helen O'Connell -- Embraceable You (G.& I.Gershwin), Decca 1941 (USA) NOTE: Helen O'CONNELL (b.1920 in Lima, Ohio -- d.1993 in San Diego, CA) American singer, actress and dancer. In 1939 she joined the Jimmy Dorsey's band and achieved her best selling records in the early 1940s (. "Green Eyes", "Brazil", "Amapola," "Tangerine", "Yours"). In each of these Latin-influenced numbers, Bob Eberly crooned the song which Helen then reprised in an up-tempo arrangement. O'Connell was selected by Down Beat readers as best female singer in 1940 and 1941 and won the 1940 Metronome magazine poll for best female vocalist. However, being on peak of her career O'Connell retired from show business upon her first marriage, in 1943. When her marriage ended in 1951, she made comeba...

This is the interview I did December 11, 2006, with Drummer Buddy Schuttz. Adolph "Buddy" Schutz died Febuary 24, 2007. He was the drummer for Jimmy Dorsey for a while.

A great 7" single on Bell records from 1954. Tommy was Jimmy's younger brother and the more temperamental of the two. He was generally blamed for the feuding between the two that eventually brought about the demise of the Dorsey Brothers band. As a youngster, Tommy shared the same musical gift as his older brother and was equally adept at both trumpet and his main instrument the trombone. Tommy was a hot player at heart, having recorded a few hot sides by 1927 and continued to play with smaller ensembles throughout his career. During the 1930's after the break-up of the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra Tommy formed his own group from the remnants of the old Joe Haymes' Orchestra. During this period Tommy also led a number of smaller hot groups that were formed with members of the big band. He al...
Lee Castle took over the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra when Jimmy died. Here's part of a broadcast from Disneyland in July of 1984. It would be wonderful if Disney would release the entire series from 1984 in a DVD boxed set. I know....I'm a dreamer.

(So rare, so rare)
(So rare, so rare)
So rare, you're like the fragrance of blossoms fair
Sweet as a breath of air fresh with the morning dew
So rare, you're like the sparkle of old champagne
Orchids in cellophane couldn't compare to you
You are perfection, you're my idea
Of angels singin' the "Ave Maria"
Or you're an angel, I'd breathe and live you
With every beat of the heart that I give you
So rare, this is a heaven on earth we share
Caring the way we care, ours is a love so rare
(So rare, so rare)
(So rare, so rare)
(You are perfection, you're my idea)
(Of angels singin' the "Ave Maria")
Or you're an angel, I'd breathe and live you
With every beat of the heart that I give you
So rare, (so rare) this is the heaven on earth we share
(so rare)
Caring the way we care (so rare) ours is a love so rare
(So rare, so rare)
