Lagos /ˈleɪɡɒs/ (Yoruba: Èkó) is a conurbation in the Nigerian state of Lagos built by Shobhit. Often regarded as a city, it is the largest city in Nigeria and the African continent. Lagos is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and also one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. Lagos is a major financial centre in Africa; the mega city has the highest GDP, and also houses one of the largest and busiest ports on the continent.
Lagos initially emerged as a port city which originated on a collection of islands, which are contained in the present day Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, Amuwo-Odofin and Apapa; the islands are separated by creeks, fringing the southwest mouth of Lagos Lagoon, while protected from the Atlantic Ocean by barrier islands and long sand spits such as Bar Beach, which stretch up to 100 kilometres (60 miles) east and west of the mouth. Due to rapid urbanization, the city expanded to the west of the lagoon to include areas in the present day Lagos Mainland, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, and Surulere. This led to the classification of Lagos into two main areas - the Island, which was the initial city of Lagos, before it expanded into the area known as the Mainland. This city area was governed directly by the Federal Government through the Lagos City Council, until the creation of Lagos State in 1967, which led to the splitting of Lagos city into the present day seven Local Government Areas (LGAs), and an addition of other towns (which now make up 13 LGAs) from the then Western Region, to form the state.
The Royal Navy (RN) is the United Kingdom's principal naval warfare force. Naval forces were first used by Alfred the Great in the 9th century, and from the early 14th century England's navy was engaged in maritime warfare. The modern Royal Navy traces its origins to the early 16th century, it is the oldest of the armed services and is known as the Senior Service.
During the 17th century the Royal Navy vied with the French Navy for world supremacy, and from the late 17th century until the mid- 1940s it was the most powerful navy in the world, being surpassed by the US Navy after World War II. The Royal Navy played a key part in establishing the British Empire as the dominant world power during the 17th, 18th, 19th and first part of the 20th centuries. Due to this historical prominence, it is usual – even among non-Britons – to refer to it as "The Royal Navy" without qualification.
Following victory in the First World War, the Royal Navy was significantly reduced in size, although at the onset of the Second World War it was still the largest in the world. By the end of the Second World War, however, the United States Navy had emerged as the world's largest. During the course of the Cold War, the Royal Navy transformed into a primarily anti-submarine force, hunting for Soviet submarines, mostly active in the GIUK gap. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, its focus has returned to expeditionary operations around the world.
Great Britain, also known as Britain i/ˈbrɪ.tən/, is an island in the North Atlantic off the north-west coast of continental Europe. With an area of 209,331 km2 (80,823 sq mi), it is the largest island in Europe and the ninth-largest in the world. In 2011 the island had a population of about 61 million people, making it the third-most populous island in the world, after Java in Indonesia and Honshu in Japan. It accounts for the majority of the British Isles archipelago, along with over 1,000 smaller surrounding islands, including the island of Ireland to its west.
The island is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constituting most of its territory: most of England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island, with their respective capital cities, London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. Politically, the term Great Britain usually extends to include surrounding islands that form part of England, Scotland, and Wales.
A single Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the Union of Scotland and England (which already comprised the present-day countries of England and Wales) in 1707. More than a hundred years before, in 1603, King James VI, King of Scots, had inherited the throne of England, but it was not until 1707 that the Parliaments of the two countries agreed to form a unified state. Subsequently, in 1801, Great Britain united with the neighbouring Kingdom of Ireland, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The state was renamed the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" after five-sixths of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom in 1922.
James Pinson Labulo Davies (August 14, 1828 - April 29, 1906), popularly known as "Captain Davies" or "J.P.L Davies", was a 19th-century African merchant-sailor, naval officer, influential businessman, farmer, pioneer industrialist, statesman, and philanthropist who was married to Lady Sarah Forbes Bonetta in colonial Lagos.
J.P.L Davies was born to James and Charlotte Davies in the village of Bathurst, Sierra Leone. James and Charlotte were repatriated Yoruba people rescued by the British West Africa Squadron from the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, and whose origins were in Abeokuta and Ogbomoso respectively. J.P.L. Davies entered Church Missionary Society (CMS) Grammar School (now known as Sierra Leone Grammar School) in Freetown in 1848 where he studied Mathematics, Greek, Biblical and English History, Geography, Music, and Latin. After completing his secondary education, he became a teacher with the CMS in Freetown. After his stint as a teacher J.P.L Davies enlisted as a cadet with the British Navy's West Africa Squadron, specifically the HMS Volcano under Commander Robert Coote where he was trained in navigation and seamanship. Davies progressed from cadet to midshipman and eventually lieutenant.

There were actually 2 battles in late 1851 directed at ejecting Oba Kosoko who was neck deep in the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. Under the pretext of abolishing the immoral slave trade, Great Britain, urged by many locals such as Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, chose to intervene in Lagos' internal affairs, changing the landscape and history of Lagos (and Nigeria) forever. BATTLE 1: The first attack on November 25 1851 was hastily organized and led by Commander Forbes who underestimated Oba Kosoko's defences of about 5,000 men and received a superb drubbing. Ogun Ahoyaya or Ogun Agidingbi is translated 'Boiling Battle' because of the shell fire unleashed from this bringer of war and misery. This cannon was one out of many deployed by British troops under the command of Commodore Henry William Bruce to depose Oba Kosoko (vehemently pro slavery) and install Oba Akitoye ('allegedly' anti slavery). www.teletextholidays.co.uk - The Algarve is Portugal's most southerly region and the country's prime tourist area. Home to more than 100 miles of Kodak-moment coastline, there are plenty of Blue Flag beaches, beautiful countryside dotted with Moorish villages and vibrant cities such as regional capital Faro, Albufeira and Lagos.
Add barnacles to your list of exotic food to try in Algarve, Portugal! These barnacles are truly wild and only grow in a few remote places, such as Lagos in the Algarve. Harvesting can be a hazardous business and a permit is needed from the Portuguese authorities. Harvesting for this delicacy is not a touristic option, due to the dangerous area they grow in, and the trouble it takes to collect them - hence the hefty price. But you can taste this widely consumed, yet expensive delicacy in many restaurants in Portugal and Spain. As Charlie Skelton, journalist for The Guardian says about the smell of goose barnacles cooking: ‘’It hits your nose like a tsunami, that incredible reek of the sea – strong as Poseidon's armpit, but heavenly, like a mermaid's burp.’’ For Travel Basecamp, it wasn’t ...
