A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine taste and increase their knowledge of the participants through conversation. These gatherings often consciously followed Horace's definition of the aims of poetry, "either to please or to educate" ("aut delectare aut prodesse est"). Salons, commonly associated with French literary and philosophical movements of the 17th and 18th centuries, were carried on until quite recently, in urban settings, among like-minded people.
The salon was an Italian invention of the 16th century which flourished in France throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The salon continued to flourish in Italy throughout the 19th century. In 16th-century Italy, some scintillating circles formed in the smaller courts which resembled salons, often galvanized by the presence of a beautiful and educated patroness such as Isabella d'Este or Elisabetta Gonzaga.

Walter Elias "Walt" Disney (December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) was an American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, entertainer, international icon, and philanthropist, well known for his influence in the field of entertainment during the 20th century. Along with his brother Roy O. Disney, he was co-founder of Walt Disney Productions, which later became one of the best-known motion picture producers in the world. Disney is particularly noted as a film producer and a popular showman, as well as an innovator in animation and theme park design. During his lifetime he received four honorary Academy Awards and won 22 Academy Awards from a total of 59 nominations, including a record four in one year, giving him more awards and nominations than any other individual in history. Disney also won seven Emmy Awards and gave his name to the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the U.S., as well as the international resorts Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland.

Jeremy Smith is a writer specializing in environment, tourism and sustainable business. He is the founder of Fair Game, the only website dedicated to supporting safari's efforts to address the poaching crisis threatening much of our most endangered wildlife.
Formerly editor of The Ecologist, he co-wrote (with Richard Hammond of Greentraveller) Clean Breaks - 500 New Ways to See the World, Rough Guides' only guidebook dedicated to responsible tourism and winner of Planeta's best guidebook for 2009. He's also a communication strategist who provides branding and communication services for clients in the responsible tourism and environmental sphere
Catherine Mack is a freelance travel writer specialising in responsible travel. She was the winner of the Virgin Holidays Best Travel Writer in Responsible Tourism Award 2011, has written for The Daily Telegraph, The Independent, The Guardian, The Observer, Metro and is a travel columnist for National Geographical Traveller UK and The Green Parent magazine. She was a regular 'Ethical Traveller' columnist for The Irish Times for four years, and still writes regular destination features for them. She's the author of the Ireland Green Travel app by SutroMedia.
Catherine published her first guidebook in June 2008, Ecoescape:Ireland. Trips include weaving with the Berbers in Morocco, working with the Maasai in Kenya, walking across The Alps with a donkey, deep sea fishing off Ireland's Mayo coast, swimming from island to island in Croatia, learning how to press olives in Crete, and sleeping in a tipi on Cape Clear Island off Ireland's South West coast.
Justin Francis co-founded Responsible Travel, the world's first and largest travel agent dedicated to green/responsible tourism in 2001. Prior to that he spent 10 years at J. Walter Thompson Advertising and was Head of Worldwide Marketing at The Body Shop.
Since 2004 Justin has organised and run the worlds' most prestigious Award scheme for responsible holidays - the World Responsible Tourism Awards. In 2010 responsibletravel.com partnered with National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK to launch www.our-land.co.uk.
Gill Williams is journalist and television producer specialising in conservation and sustainable tourism.She co-founded greentravelguides.tv, a web show about sustainable tourism. The show covers issues such as logging and reforestation in Sumatra, invasive species in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean and sustainable farming in Britain.
She is author of 100 Alien Invaders, a popular science book highlighting the serious dangers of invasive species to life on Earth. Gill is an environmental lobbyist and consultant. She was formerly the travel editor of the Sunday Mirror, travel columnist for The Guardian, as well as TV, radio producer and broadcaster.

Max studied data science and diplomacy at Brown University. He is interested in expanding intercultural empathy through the latest technological tools. In his free time, he’s co-published a book on data science, worked for 4 different technology companies as a data scientist, built predictive models for FED CCAR Stress test, started the One Salon—an intellectual, emotional and experiential gathering devoted to human awakening in fourteen cities around the world. He was selected as a member of the inaugural Schwarzman Scholar program and is going to Tsinghua University to study politics, economics and diplomacy.

EPL Literary Salon: Bringing Books to the Border
In 2014, when more than 70,000 children crossed the southern border into the United States—many of them unaccompanied—it sparked a humanitarian crisis. Infrastructure for food, housing, medical attention, and legal services had to be created, but no less important was the provision of good books and library services in Spanish and indigenous languages. This past spring, IBBY, the International Board on Books for Young People, based in Switzerland, joined REFORMA’s Children in Crisis Project to help bring children’s books to the refugee children still arriving in the Rio Grande Valley. In 2014, when more than 70,000 children crossed the southern border into the United States—many of them unaccompanied—it sparked a humanitarian crisis. Infrastructure for food, housing, medical attention, and legal services had to be created, but no less important was the provision of good books and library services in Spanish and indigenous languages. This past spring, IBBY, the International Board on Books for Young People, based in Switzerland, joined REFORMA’s Children in Crisis Project to help bring children’s books to the refugee children still arriving in the Rio Grande Valley. In August, local bookstore owner Jeff Garrett (Bookends & Beginnings) helped organize a fact-finding and book-delivering visit to government, church, and other private agencies responding to the crisis. Speaking about his experiences, with photos documenting the journey, Jeff touches on many of the issues surrounding the border today and what we can learn from those who are working with refugee children every day.
This kicks off the first program in The EPL Literary Salon series. The EPL Literary Salon is a monthly gathering of enthusiasts of children's books moderated by Betsy Bird. Originally conceived in New York City, it encompasses all topics pertaining to written works for young people.

From his pioneering application of post-structuralist theory to architecture in Meaning in Architecture, 1969, (Charles Jencks co-editor) to the reflections on Hannah Arendt in his 1995 Space of Appearance, Baird’s writing, editing and teaching has probed the essence of creation and city-dwelling. Similarly, his professional practice from the 1975 urban design study On Building Downtown for the City of Toronto, to Governor-General’s award-winning buildings demonstrate a rare ability to transfer abstract ideas to the contingencies of city-building and construction.
Kenneth Frampton is a British architect, critic, historian and the Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University. Frampton’s influential publications include Modern Architecture: A Critical History, in its 5th edition this year, and Labour, Work and Architecture, amongst many others.

Over the last decade art museums have restaged many performances and dances, mostly from the 1960s and 1970s. Here we go, SEASON 2! The Chronicles Vlog is back now for 2016 documenting our many adventures in Japan! I take my annual trip to Tokyo, Japan for the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon event and later travel to Osaka to spend time with friends. This time around, I have some first-timers along for the journey along with the usual suspects who you've come to know well from my other Vlogs.
Part 2 covers everything that happened at the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon event. We witnessed the set-up phase of the event but the following day was actually the first official day of the TAS '16. This year, we were able to get a hold of some exhibitor passes for the show and were able to go in earlier than usual. Being that the show had extended hours on the first day, we made sure to see as much of it as possible before the show opened to the public later that afternoon. I have photo coverage of the event as well that will be posted on the site in the next update. The photos provide a much more detailed look at many of the other vehicles not showcased in this Vlog. Check it out and enjoy Tokyo Auto Salon 2016, minus the crowd of crazy perverts and onlookers who weren't even there for the cars.

For awhile many of us have been excited by the prospect of Decentralized Autonomous Organization. The power of decentralized systems can exist in the real world and already do in nature. With tools like Ethereum and SwarmOps coming out, soon we'll be able to organize Global Decentralized Movements. This thursday we'll be exploring 3 DAO's, how they'll work, and how we can support each other.
• DAO #1: The Decentralized Dance Party - Gary Lachance
If you haven't heard of this yet do yourself a favour and click here. The DDP has been blowing people's minds for over 5 years, and the time has finally come for them to release The Official DDP Field Manual which will Open Source their glorious decentralized parties. Their goal is to create a simultaneous Global Party for World Peace. They'll be issuing Peace Bonds and win the Nobel Peace Prize for Partying, two times in a row!
• DAO #2: Coinfest- Andrew Wagner
CoinFest started in 2013 as a relatively small gathering of 100 or so Bitcoiners, celebrating the adoption of Bitcoin at a Waves Coffee House in Vancouver. It was conceived as a way to incentivize cryptocurrency acceptance while educating the public about its importance and use. Its popular success prompted the Bitcoiniacs (now CoinTrader) to place the world’s first Bitocin ATM there, which we again celebrated. By 2014, CoinFest was growing in popularity, and that year it took a new direction: CoinFest spread across Canada and now internationally, exemplifying the border–defying and decentralized nature of crypto. Vancouver lead the way again by booking multiple venues simultaneously for a less centrally organized variety of exhibits, as Satoshi would have wanted.
• DAO #3: The Decentral Network- Cameron Gray
The Decentral Network is the idea that anyone in the world can create their own Decentral space and effectively become Nodes in The Decentral Network. The goal of Decentral Nodes may vary but with the general consensus they should spread decentralization ethos, community, and commerce to the cities, and towns they're situated in. Decentral Vancouver has helped build up a strong cryptocurrency community in Vancouver, with plans to do more outreach to teach developers and grassroots organizers about Blockchain Technology. With Nodes all over the world we can connect our cities to the decentralized tradenet economy that is forming.

La`Zooz is a Decentralized Transportation Platform that is owned by the community which turns vehicles` unused space into a variety of smart transportation solutions. By using cryptocurrency technology La`Zooz has developed a “Fair Share” rewarding mechanism for its developers, users and backers.

His presentation will be projected Big Screen at the physical gathering in Silver Spring, but people around the world will also be watching on the Web. This audacious stretching of the boundaries of our local salon will be an experiment, and one we hope everyone associated will participate in. Talents and Gifts
A severe case of tendonitis followed by a three year debilitating illness rendered, Franklin Taggart unable to perform music. This unfortunate circumstance had the silver-lining of helping him realize that there is a distinction to be made between a person's talents and their gifts.
In recent years there have been several books written about finding your genius, super power, and core competencies all suggesting that there is one thing that you do more naturally than anything else.
Franklin's view differs by saying that your gift can be brought into the world in a variety of ways, your talent being just one. Realizing your own gift and making sure that its delivery is the purpose of your work is a key to deeper meaning and satisfaction in your vocation.
Franklin Taggart is a jack of many trades including music creation, production and performance, vocational coaching, project consulting, online commerce, and community building. He is the founder of the Loveland Guitar Society, NoCo Indie Shows concerts, and the Artist to Artist visual arts meets musical arts series. He performs frequently in Northern Colorado and Southeast Wyoming. His coaching specialty is helping people to develop the courage to boldly bring their gifts into the world and finding practical ways to make that happen. He has released one CD of his own songs, Falling All the Way in 2001 and he is recording a second CD, Wide Open Heart due for release in the Fall of 2014. He is also currently pursuing two book projects, one a big picture view of vocation called Heart Driven Work, and the second a guide to integrating imagination into everyday life called Shoebox Full of Napkins.

Reverend Nano Boye Nagle, MLA, Ziji Salaam, Interfaith Minister and Drum Guardian, grew up in London amidst a predominately Irish-Catholic community. She escaped to Seattle in 1989 and now makes her home in Austin, Texas. Writer, actor, musician, scholar and poet, she is honoured to be included in this anthology. About the Speakers:
Normandi Ellis is an author, playwright, poet and translator, most well-known for her translation of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, Awakening Osiris. Among her other works are: Feasts of Light and Dreams of Isis (essays on Egypt), Voice Forms (poetry) and Sorrowful Mysteries and Other Stories (fiction). She is a past winner of the Bumbershoot Award for Literature and grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Contact her at ellisisis@gmail.com
Reverend Nano Boye Nagle, MLA, Ziji Salaam, Interfaith Minister and Drum Guardian, grew up in London amidst a predominately Irish-Catholic community. She escaped to Seattle in 1989 and now makes her home in Austin, Texas. Writer, actor, musician, scholar and poet, she is honoured to be included in this anthology. Former columnist and poetry editor for Matrifocus (www.matrifocus.com) and current poetry editor for Seasonal Salon, www.rcgi.org/news/seasonal-salon, Boye’s poetry appears in anthologies and journals and on her blog www.poetryfishing.blogspot.com. Her essay “Beautiful Boy’” in Looking Queer: Body Image and Identity in Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, and Transgender Communities (Routledge, 1998) is widely read in gender studies programs. She is completing her first novel and planning the second. Boye’s thriving private practice, “EFT2BME,” offers spiritual direction, mediation, EFT (tapping) and coaching for women with ADD and other creative eccentricities. She facilitates workshops for women around the country, offering expansive conversations about full, fluid gender expression, spiritual practice and the possibilities of Queer Spirituality. She has been teaching ritual drumming at the Re-formed Congregation of the Goddess, International gatherings (www.rcgi.org) for five years and is evangelical about the role of drummers and drumming in ritual. So episode 43 is in the can, and it was a blast! We're finally all back from all of our trips (for now) and we got back to making a great show for you guys.
For starters, Thad got to wear a pair of glasses with a camera in them, which is pretty fun to see the show from his point of view for a change. We got lots of new products and tools to go over. Stuff like new shampoos from Paul Mitchell, new irons, collections, and more! So check that cool stuff out!
I got to go over a whole bunch what a cool experience it was to work the Gathering this year for Paul Mitchell in Vegas. I quickly shared a couple of the neat tips and tricks that I picked up out there.
We went through our questions from the last couple weeks, and got some inspirations for upcoming videos and topics, so be sure to throw us some questions or ideas for us!
Matt offered some cool vantage points of what it's like from the perspective of a salon owner, which we tend to forget what it's like sometimes. Then he went into the "top 10 up and coming social media apps". See how that list went over with us. Lol!
Drea came with her Trending Tresses and I think my favorite was the James Franco blonde. It was just something fun he did for a role, but if you blinked, you missed it, cos he's already back to brunette.
