This presentation was given at the 11th Annual FTDNA Conference in Houston (Nov 15th 2015). The SNP tsunami has landed us with a huge array of new DNA markers and as we learn where to place them on the evolutionary tree, we move closer and closer to modern times. Soon we will be able to connect the human evolutionary Y-haplotree with actual genealogies that bring us up to the present day. This presentation looks at how it has been possible to construct Mutation History Trees (cladograms) for the Gleeson Lineage II subgroup based on 1) STR testing, 2) Big Y testing, and 3) a combination of the two, which allow existing Gleeson pedigrees to be hung on the terminal branches. It also explores how close we are to building a "Surname Origins Tree” (a combined Family / Mutation History Tree) for this particular subgroup and what hurdles and challenges remain to be overcome. This general approach can be utilised and adapted by anyone running a surname project.
Maurice Gleeson, a psychiatrist and pharmaceutical physician by day and a genetic genealogist by night, is administrator for the Gleason/Gleeson, Spearin, Farrell, Irish Caribbean DNA and WW1 Missing Legacy projects. He has organized "Genetic Genealogy Ireland" in Dublin and "Who Do You Think You Are" in the UK since 2012, as well as given talks all over Ireland and internationally. His YouTube videos on genetic genealogy are very popular and he was recently awarded Genetic Genealogist of the Year 2015 by SurnameDNA Journal.

A surname is a name added to a given name and is part of a personal name. In many cases, a surname is a family name. Many dictionaries define "surname" as a synonym of "family name". In some Western world countries, it is commonly called "last name". In all Western countries in North and South America as well as Europe, a surname is placed at the end of a person's given name. In Spain and most Spanish-speaking countries, two last names or surnames are used. One notable exception on the order is in Hungary, where, just like in China, Korea (성씨), Japan and in many other East Asian countries, the family name is placed before a person's given name.
The western style of having both a family name (surname) and a given name (Christian name or forename) is far from universal. In many countries it is common for ordinary people to have only one name or mononym.
In some cultures, including those of most Western countries, the surname or family name ("last name") is placed after the personal or given name ("first name"). In other cultures the surname is placed first, followed by the given name or names; this is the case in Hungary, parts of Romania, South India, Sri Lanka and countries in the Chinese cultural sphere including Japan, Korea, Vietnam and China.

This presentation was given at the 11th Annual FTDNA Conference in Houston (Nov 15th 2015). The SNP tsunami has landed us with a huge array of new DNA markers and as we learn where to place them on the evolutionary tree, we move closer and closer to modern times. Soon we will be able to connect the human evolutionary Y-haplotree with actual genealogies that bring us up to the present day. This presentation looks at how it has been possible to construct Mutation History Trees (cladograms) for the Gleeson Lineage II subgroup based on 1) STR testing, 2) Big Y testing, and 3) a combination of the two, which allow existing Gleeson pedigrees to be hung on the terminal branches. It also explores how close we are to building a "Surname Origins Tree” (a combined Family / Mutation History Tree) for this particular subgroup and what hurdles and challenges remain to be overcome. This general approach can be utilised and adapted by anyone running a surname project.
Maurice Gleeson, a psychiatrist and pharmaceutical physician by day and a genetic genealogist by night, is administrator for the Gleason/Gleeson, Spearin, Farrell, Irish Caribbean DNA and WW1 Missing Legacy projects. He has organized "Genetic Genealogy Ireland" in Dublin and "Who Do You Think You Are" in the UK since 2012, as well as given talks all over Ireland and internationally. His YouTube videos on genetic genealogy are very popular and he was recently awarded Genetic Genealogist of the Year 2015 by SurnameDNA Journal.

Some Tasmanian Bhutanese people are changing their existing surname in Tasmania. Majority of them are from Kirat Khambu ethnic clans. Many of them are believing that their existing surname 'Rai' is not their actual surname and its not worth to keep it as their family name because of many reasons such as
(1) Historically 'Rai' signifies a post given by conqueror Prithivi Narayan Shah in 1831 B.S. to some of the powerful Kiratis authorizing them to collect revenue in the area mentioned and to pacify their defected enemies.
(2) Many clans of Kirat Khambus are given the common title 'Rai' and thus, it would be difficult to distinguish the particular clan of Kirat Khambu. Therefore, there is more likelihood of having marriage within own family and different clans of Kirat Khambus may reach in a point of extinction. Thus, in order to preserve and give continuity of their own clan, Tasmanian Kirat Khambus are making their surname more specific by putting their particular clan of Kirat Khambu based on their family tree (ancestral origin). Additionally, the Bhutanese Kirat/Buddhist Association of Tasmania (BKBAT) Inc. has been celebrating different festivals such as Sakela, Sakewa, Buddhajayanti, Tihar, Mahaguru Phalgunanada's birthday anniversary and Christmas since 2010 in Tasmania in order to preserve Bhutanese-Nepali cultures and share with young generation and wider Australian communities and to assist in building an inclusive and cohesive communities in Tasmania.
(3) Historically, different titles were given to different kiraties such as ‘Rai’ to Kirat Khambus, ‘Subba’ to Kirat Limbus, ‘Mukhiya’ to Kirat Sunuwar and ‘Devan’ to Kirat Yakkha. He has recently collaborated with George Redmonds and Turi King in writing Surnames, DNA and Family History (OUP, 2011).
The hearth tax was the chief source of revenue for King Charles II. People were taxed according to the number of hearths in their houses, though the poorest householders and cottagers were exempt. The tax was collected at a county level and the returns were arranged by the sub-divisions known as hundreds or wapentakes, which in turn were divided into smaller units, known variously as parishes, townships, constabularies, quarters, etc. For each of these places we have lists of the names of the heads of household and the number of hearths that they possessed. The exempted poor were also supposed to be listed but in practice their names were sometimes omitted. These returns have long been used by historians who are interested in social structure, population levels and vernacular architecture, but they are also of great use in the study of surnames, for they show the distribution of names about half way between their formation in the Middle Ages and the present day. The hearth tax returns are our most valuable source for the distribution of surnames before the Industrial Revolution. Many are now in print.
