1940's Hollywood take on the 1920s - but actually done with considerable attention to period. A charming, if dated and sentimental film that I can't definitely say has not been on DVD, though I've never been able to find it! Although the film is usually headed as a ‘musical', it can't really be classed as such in spite of the amount of music used in the film. I do not own the copyright to this film and no infringement is intended.

Jean-Jacques Sauvage est de retour à Lyon, sa ville natale. Directeur d'une troupe de ballet internationalement célèbre, il vient rôder son nouveau spectacle avant de le présenter à Paris. Vingt ans auparavant il avait été abattu par l'un de ses amis, Jérôme Nizard, un riche soyeux lyonnais qui, n'approuvant pas son projet de mariage avec sa sœur Geneviève, a tenté de le tuer en maquillant son crime avec la complicité d'Edmond Gonin, devenu ensuite son beau-frère. Jean-Jacques décide de s'amuser un peu aux dépens de ceux qui ont assassiné sa jeunesse. Il retrouve, séduit à nouveau et abandonne cyniquement Geneviève, son amour d'autrefois, qui semble l'avoir peu pleuré, puis pousse presque au suicide François, le fils de l'ami félon en le jetant dans les bras de sa danseuse étoile, Karina. Mais, séduit par la grâce et la pureté du jeune homme, il l'emmène avec lui vers Paris, tandis que Geneviève disparaît dans la fumée du train quittant la gare de Perrache et les débris d'une vieille photo déchirée et jetés au vent par Jean-Jacques.

Vingt ans auparavant il avait été abattu par l'un de ses amis, Jérôme Nizard, un riche soyeux lyonnais qui, n'approuvant pas son projet de mariage avec sa sœur Geneviève, a tenté de le tuer en maquillant son crime avec la complicité d'Edmond Gonin, devenu ensuite son beau-frère. Part eight of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower.
After the initial jubilation at the end of World War II, America faced severe domestic
demographic problems and the international specter of communism and the Cold War. In
response to the serious housing shortages exacerbated by the high marriage rates and
subsequent baby boom of returning soldiers and the girls they left behind, the Truman administration created the GI Bill, which enabled veterans to secure low interest mortgages and college educations. But the domestic bliss of new homes and growing families could not alleviate the growing fears and hysteria of the new atomic age, and a demagogue from Wisconsin, Senator Joseph McCarthy, harnessed this hysteria for his personal political success. This episode covers some of the major events of the immediate post-war years such as the Korean War, McCarthyism, the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift and the adjustment of returning soldiers.
