Treasure hunters uncover $4.5 million worth of treasure in Florida's Treasure Coast - TomoNews
VERO BEACH, FLORIDA —
Treasure hunters have discovered $
4.5 million worth of lost
Spanish treasure in
Florida.
Treasure salvor
Brent Brisben, owner of the 1715
Fleet -
Queens Jewels company, told
CBS on Wednesday that among the vast number of gold coins they found on July 30 and 31 off the coast of
Vero Beach were nine extremely rare
Royals. Royals are gold coins made specifically for
King Philip V of Spain, who reigned from
1700 until his death in 1746. Only a few of these coins were made, and each piece is valued at $
300,
000.
Royals were made by pouring molten gold into moulds, which resulted in better circular symmetry than the smaller coins found along with them.
Eleven galleons carrying the coins, royals, and the "queen's jewels" departed
Havana for
Spain on July 24, 1715. Upon reaching the area known today as
Florida's Treasure Coast, a hurricane shipwrecked the galleons and the treasures were lost, only to be found again 300 years later.
The U.S. District Court of Florida will assess the gold recovered, and 20 percent will be kept by the state. The remaining 80 percent will be divided among
Brisben and his crew.
