Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina. Buenos Aires city is located within the Province of Buenos Aires on the southern shore of the Río de la Plata, on the southeastern coast of the South American continent, but is not the capital of the province, nor even part of it. Greater Buenos Aires is the third largest conurbation in Latin America, with a population of about 13 million.
After the internal conflicts of the 19th century, Buenos Aires was federalised and removed from Buenos Aires Province in 1880. The city limits were enlarged to include the former towns of Belgrano and Flores, which are both now neighbourhoods of the city.
Buenos Aires (English: Fair Winds or Good Air (see Names of Buenos Aires), pronounced [ˈbwe.nɔs ˈaj.ɾɛs]) was originally named after the sanctuary of "Nostra Signora di Bonaria"[citation needed] (Italian for "Our Lady of Fair Winds", also known as "Virgine de Bonaria") in Cagliari, Sardinia. In the 1994 constitution the city became autonomous, hence its formal name: Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires.

Origin of the dance:Tango
The dance form derives from the Cuban habanera, the Argentine milonga and candombe, and is said to contain elements from the African community in Buenos Aires, influenced both by ancient African rhythms and the music from Europe.Even though the present forms developed in Argentina from the mid 19th century, there are earlier written records of Tango dances in Cuba and Spain, while there is a flamenco Tangos dance that may share a common ancestor in a minuet-style European dance. All sources stress the influence of the African communities and their rhythms, while the instruments and techniques brought in by European immigrants played a major role in its final definition, relating it to the Salon music styles to which Tango would contribute back at a later stage, when it became fashionable in early 20th century Paris.In Argentina, the word Tango seems to have first been used in the 1890s. In 1902 the Teatro Opera started to include tango in their balls.Initially tango was just one of the many available local dances, but it soon became popular throughout society, as theatres and street barrel organs spread it from the suburbs to the working-class slums, which were packed with hundreds of thousands of European immigrants. The development of the Tango had influences from the cultures of several peoples that came together in these melting pots of ethnicities. Buenos Aires is considered an Alpha World City as listed by the Loughborough University group's (GaWC) 2008 inventory.
The majority of porteños have European origins, with Italian and Spanish descent being the most common, from the Calabrian, Ligurian, Piedmont, Lombardy and Neapolitan regions of Italy and from the Galician, Asturian, and Basque regions of Spain.[18][19]
Other European origins include German, Swedish, Dutch, Greek, Irish, Norwegian, Portuguese, French, Russian, Croatian, English and Welsh. In the 1990s there was a small wave of immigration from Romania and Ukraine.
There is a minority of old criollo stock, dating back to the Spanish colonial days. The Criollo and Spanish-aboriginal (mestizo) population in the city has increased mostly as a result of immigration, from countries such as Bolivia, Peru and Paraguay, since the second half of the 20th century.
Important Syrian-Lebanese and Armenian communities have had a significant presence in commerce and civic life since the beginning of the 20th century.
The Jewish community in Greater Buenos Aires numbers around 250,000, and is the largest in Latin America. Most are of Northern and Eastern European Ashkenazi origin, primarily Russian, German and Polish Jews, with a significant Sephardic minority, mostly made up of Syrian Jews.[21]
The first major East Asian community in Buenos Aires was the Japanese, mainly from Okinawa. Traditionally, Japanese-Argentines were noted as flower growers; in the city proper, there was a Japanese near-monopoly in dry cleaning. Later generations have branched out into all fields of economic activity. Starting in the 1970s there has been an important influx of immigration from China and Korea

Greater Buenos Aires
Greater Buenos Aires (Spanish: Gran Buenos Aires; GBA) is the urban agglomeration comprising the autonomous city of Buenos Aires and the adjacent 24 partidos (districts) over the Province of Buenos Aires. Thus, it does not constitute a single administrative unit. The conurbation spreads south, west and north of Buenos Aires city. To the east, the River Plate serves as a natural boundary.
Urban sprawl, especially between 1945 and 1980, created a vast conurbation of 9,910,282 inhabitants in the 24 conurbated partidos, as of 2010, and a total of 12,801,365 including the City of Buenos Aires, a third of the total population of Argentina and generating more than half of the country's GDP.
History
The term Gran Buenos Aires ("Greater Buenos Aires") was first officially used in 1948, when Governor of Buenos Aires Province Domingo Mercante signed a bill delineating as such an area covering 14 municipalities surrounding the City of Buenos Aires. The term is also related to other expressions that are not necessarily well-defined: the "Buenos Aires' conurbation" (Conurbano Bonaerense), the "Greater Buenos Aires Agglomeration" (Aglomerado Gran Buenos Aires), and the "Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires" (Área Metropolitana Buenos Aires, AMBA).

The majority of porteños have European origins, with Italian and Spanish descent being the most common, from the Calabrian, Ligurian, Piedmont, Lombardy and Neapolitan regions of Italy and from the Galician, Asturian, and Basque regions of Spain.[18][19] Other European origins include German, Swedish, Dutch, Greek, Irish, Norwegian, Portuguese, French, Russian, Croatian, English and Welsh. In the 1990s there was a small wave of immigration from Romania and Ukraine. There is a minority of old criollo stock, dating back to the Spanish colonial days. The Criollo and Spanish-aboriginal (mestizo) population in the city has increased mostly as a result of immigration, from countries such as Bolivia, Peru and Paraguay, since the second half of the 20th century. Important Syrian-Lebanese and Armenian communities have had a significant presence in commerce and civic life since the beginning of the 20th century. The Jewish community in Greater Buenos Aires numbers around 250,000, and is the largest in Latin America. I discovered Demasiado tours through Couchsurfing and recommendations from friends I met at different CouchSurfing meetings in Buenos Aires.

2) Recoleta neighborhood & cemetery
This "barrio" is one of the fancy onces, close to the city center -- great architecture, nice parks and one of the most popular cemeteries in town with impressive graves of notable people like "Evita". I did a free tour here as well to get a quick overview before walking around on my own.

3) Buenos Aires Street Art Tours

The amount of people who immigrated from Italy to Buenos Aires and Argentina in general is very high -- therefore you can find loads of great Ice Cream Parlours here. Beside the big chains like "Freddo" you should go for some family owned businesses -- ask the locals as they know best where to go!

5) Discover Buenos Aires by Bike
Time to do something active: grab a bike and cycle around the city (like I did in Berlin)! Since 2 years the city provides a decent network of bicycle routes & most of the hostels offer a bike rental service. This is a great way to get to know Puerto Madero as there is no Subte (Metro) station close to it.

6) Parks
After all these activities it's time for a break! Luckily you can find a decent amount of green areas all around the city. My favourite one has been "Bosques de Palermo"

Tango was born in San Telmo and there is an option to watch it for free at the sundays open-air market.
8) San Telmo Market / Sunday fair
The best day to visit the oldest barrio of Buenos Aires, San Telmo, is possibly on Sundays where you can stroll along the antique-market. Though it is very touristy it is a good place to get some nice souvenirs.

9) Steak & Malbec Wine
There is no visit to Argentina without having a great steak sided by some of the best wines you can find! Beside having an Asado with friends, the restaurant "Las Cabras" is a very good and budget friendly option which is quite popular by locals, too!

Buenos Aires - The Capital and Largest City Part II - Buenos Aires (/ˈbweɪnəs ˈɛəriːz/ or /ˈaɪrɪs/,[4] Spanish: [ˈbwenos ˈaiɾes]) is the capital and largest city of Argentina, and the second-largest metropolitan area in South America, after Greater São Paulo.[5] It is located on the western shore of the estuary of the Río de la Plata, on the continent's southeastern coast. The Greater Buenos Aires conurbation, which also includes several Buenos Aires Province districts, constitutes the third-largest conurbation in Latin America, with a population of around fifteen and a half million.[2]
The city of Buenos Aires is neither part of Buenos Aires Province nor the Province's capital; rather, it is an autonomous district.[6] In 1880, after decades of political infighting, Buenos Aires was federalised and removed from Buenos Aires Province.[7] The city limits were enlarged to include the towns of Belgrano and Flores; both are now neighborhoods of the city.
When the Aragonese conquered Cagliari, Sardinia from the Pisans in 1324, they established their headquarters on top of a hill that overlooked the city. The hill was known to them as Buen Ayre (or "Bonaria" in the local language), as it was free of the foul smell prevalent in the old city (the castle area), which is adjacent to swampland.
Seaman Juan Díaz de Solís, navigating in the name of Spain, was the first European to reach the Río de la Plata in 1516. His expedition was cut short when he was killed during an attack by the native Charrúa tribe in what is now Uruguay.
The limits of Buenos Aires proper are determined in the eastern part and north-east by the Rio de la Plata, in the southern part and southeast by the Riachuelo and to the northwest, west and Southwest by Avenida General Paz, a 24 km (15 mi) long highway that separates the province of Buenos Aires from the 203 km2 (78 sq mi) that form the city.

- La Boca — considered Buenos Aires's most controversial neighborhood with an explosive personality. Tourists favor this picturesque district for its rich history and vibrant colors: greens, yellows, reds and purples highlight the urban scenery.
- Palermo — hip residential neighborhood of tree-lined streets and intersections packed with restaurants, bars and boutiques. There are several "sub neighborhoods" such as Palermo-Viejo, Palermo-SoHo, Palermo-Hollywood.
- Recoleta — one of the finest and most expensive areas of the city. It boasts many French style buildings, large green spaces and first class restaurants. The famous Recoleta Cemetery is well worth a visit.
