Oil and gas are generated from a source rock, organic matter buried in the depths of the earth. Once formed, they climb back towards the surface. On their way, cap rocks can impede their progress and they accumulate in reservoir rocks. Here they constitute hydrocarbon fields, which can be identified by interpreting seismic data (a sort of echography).
The data is obtained with the help of a seismic ship. To confirm the interpretations of seismic data, two types of drilling gear exist. Each is adapted to a range of depth of water (down to more than 2500 meters). The platform seen here is a semi-submersible, which floats and retains its stabilised position by means of anchors fixed on the seabed.
Platforms at sea are used not only for drilling but also for the production of hydrocarbons. This production consists of the separation of oil, gas and water, before the oil and gas is taken by pipeline towards a mainland terminal. Where it is impossible or too expensive to link the field to the coast by a pipeline, an FPSO ship is used (Floating Production Storage and Offloading barge). Onboard, the hydrocarbons and the water are separated. The oil is stored prior to being loaded on tankers and the gas is re-injected into the reservoir rocks. Gas from a field is taken to land through an underground gasoduct to a processing plant.
There, if the gas is to be transported by sea, it is converted into liquid obtained by cooling it down to --163°C. When it arrives at the plant terminal, the liquid natural gas (LNG) is returned to its gaseous state in a re-gasification plant, before being introduced into the local gasoduct network. The LNG is stored in tanks before re-gasification. The crude oil is transported in a petroleum tanker, the capacity of which can attain 200 000 tons. It is commonly called a "super- tanker". The terminals capable of receiving such giants are few and far between. The ships used to transport the crude oil produced on an FPSO ship are of a much smaller capacity. The crude oil, before being refined, is stored in the port in the large capacity tanks.
The natural gas is preserved in reservoirs (artificial or natural). It is ready to be injected by pumping into the gasoduct network for industrial and domestic use or as fuel in power-generating stations. As far as the crude oil goes, it is transported by oleoduct to the refinery. There it undergoes a number of transformations and blending. A variety of finished products are obtained (LPG, petrol, kerosene, diesel ...), or naphtha, which will be used as the basis for the composition of plastic products by complex petroleum chemistry.

Geologists use seismic surveys to search for geological structures that may form oil reservoirs. The "classic" method includes making an underground explosion nearby and observing the seismic response that provides information about the geological structures under the ground. However, "passive" methods that extract information from naturally-occurring seismic waves are also known.
The oil well is created by drilling a long hole into the earth with an oil rig. A steel pipe (casing) is placed in the hole, to provide structural integrity to the newly drilled well bore. Holes are then made in the base of the well to enable oil to pass into the bore.Finally a collection of valves called a "Christmas Tree" is fitted to the top, the valves regulate pressures and control flow.
During the primary recovery stage, reservoir drive comes from a number of natural mechanisms. These include: natural water displacing oil downward into the well, expansion of the natural gas at the top of the reservoir, expansion of gas initially dissolved in the crude oil, and gravity drainage resulting from the movement of oil within the reservoir from the upper to the lower parts where the wells are located. Recovery factor during the primary recovery stage is typically 5-15%.
While the underground pressure in the oil reservoir is sufficient to force the oil to the surface, all that is necessary is to place a complex arrangement of valves (the Christmas tree) on the well head to connect the well to a pipeline network for storage and processing. Sometimes pumps, such as beam pumps and electrical submersible pumps (ESPs), are used to bring the oil to the surface; these are known as artificial lift mechanisms.
Over the lifetime of the well the pressure will fall, and at some point there will be insufficient underground pressure to force the oil to the surface. After natural reservoir drive diminishes, secondary recovery methods are applied. They rely on the supply of external energy into the reservoir in the form of injecting fluids to increase reservoir pressure, hence replacing or increasing the natural reservoir drive with an artificial drive. Secondary recovery techniques increase the reservoir's pressure by water injection, natural gas reinjection and gas lift, which injects air, carbon dioxide or some other gas into the bottom of an active well, reducing the overall density of fluid in the wellbore. Typical recovery factor from water-flood operations is about 30%, depending on the properties of oil and the characteristics of the reservoir rock. On average, the recovery factor after primary and secondary oil recovery operations is between 35 and 45%.
The amount of oil that is recoverable is determined by a number of factors including the permeability of the rocks, the strength of natural drives (the gas present, pressure from adjacent water or gravity), and the viscosity of the oil. When the reservoir rocks are "tight" such as shale, oil generally cannot flow through but when they are permeable such as in sandstone, oil flows freely. The flow of oil is often helped by natural pressures surrounding the reservoir rocks including natural gas that may be dissolved in the oil (Gas oil ratio), natural gas present above the oil, water below the oil and the strength of gravity. Oils tend to span a large range of viscosity from liquids as light as gasoline to heavy as tar. The lightest forms tend to result in higher extraction rates.
Petroleum engineering is the discipline responsible for evaluating which well locations and recovery mechanisms are appropriate for a reservoir and for estimating recovery rates and oil reserves prior to actual extraction.

World Top 10 Largest Oil and Gas Companies
10. Kuwait Petrol Corporation -- 3.2 million barrels per day -In 1934 the Kuwait Oil Company was created by the companies we know today as BP and Chevron. Over the next 40 years, exploration and development expanded the production potential of the Kuwaiti oilfields. In 1975, the Kuwait government took over the Kuwait Oil Company and by 1980 had nationalized the oil industry under the new Kuwait Petroleum Organization (KPO).

Over the following decades, the PCOC joined other companies and experienced reorganization and several name changes. Over the years the company changed names and expanded its drilling operations from the Middle East to Alaska and the North Sea. At one time, the company was the second largest oil company in the world. After the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, however, the company sold off a number of assets to help pay for the $4.5 billion in penalties, fines and legal fees.

Don't be fooled by the 'mere' $150 billion annual revenue and $40 billion annual profits of this company.

American support for Israel in the 1970s led the Saudi Arabian government to push for a greater stake in the domestic oil industry.

Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years. Fossil fuels contain high percentages of carbon and include coal, petroleum, and natural gas. They range from volatile materials with low carbon:hydrogen ratios like methane, to liquid petroleum to nonvolatile materials composed of almost pure carbon, like anthracite coal. Methane can be found in hydrocarbon fields, alone, associated with oil, or in the form of methane clathrates. Fossil fuels formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth's crust over millions of years. This biogenic theory was first introduced by Georg Agricola in 1556 and later by Mikhail Lomonosov in the 18th century.
It was estimated by the Energy Information Administration that in 2007 primary sources of energy consisted of petroleum 36.0%, coal 27.4%, natural gas 23.0%, amounting to an 86.4% share for fossil fuels in primary energy consumption in the world. Non-fossil sources in 2006 included hydroelectric 6.3%, nuclear 8.5%, and others (geothermal, solar, tidal, wind, wood, waste) amounting to 0.9%. World energy consumption was growing about 2.3% per year.

Geologists use seismic surveys to search for geological structures that may form oil reservoirs. The "classic" method includes making an underground explosion nearby and observing the seismic response that provides information about the geological structures under the ground. Oil and gas are generated from a source rock, organic matter buried in the depths of the earth. Once formed, they climb back towards the surface. On their way, cap rocks can impede their progress and they accumulate in reservoir rocks. Here they constitute hydrocarbon fields, which can be identified by interpreting seismic data (a sort of echography).
The data is obtained with the help of a seismic ship. To confirm the interpretations of seismic data, two types of drilling gear exist. Each is adapted to a range of depth of water (down to more than 2500 meters). The platform seen here is a semi-submersible, which floats and retains its stabilised position by means of anchors fixed on the seabed.
Platforms at sea are used not only for drilling but also for the production of hydrocarbons. This production consists of the separation of oil, gas and water, before the oil and gas is taken by pipeline towards a mainland terminal. Where it is impossible or too expensive to link the field to the coast by a pipeline, an FPSO ship is used (Floating Production Storage and Offloading barge). Onboard, the hydrocarbons and the water are separated. The oil is stored prior to being loaded on tankers and the gas is re-injected into the reservoir rocks. Gas from a field is taken to land through an underground gasoduct to a processing plant.
There, if the gas is to be transported by sea, it is converted into liquid obtained by cooling it down to --163°C. When it arrives at the plant terminal, the liquid natural gas (LNG) is returned to its gaseous state in a re-gasification plant, before being introduced into the local gasoduct network. The LNG is stored in tanks before re-gasification. The crude oil is transported in a petroleum tanker, the capacity of which can attain 200 000 tons. It is commonly called a "super- tanker". The terminals capable of receiving such giants are few and far between. The ships used to transport the crude oil produced on an FPSO ship are of a much smaller capacity. The crude oil, before being refined, is stored in the port in the large capacity tanks.
The natural gas is preserved in reservoirs (artificial or natural). It is ready to be injected by pumping into the gasoduct network for industrial and domestic use or as fuel in power-generating stations. As far as the crude oil goes, it is transported by oleoduct to the refinery. There it undergoes a number of transformations and blending. A variety of finished products are obtained (LPG, petrol, kerosene, diesel ...), or naphtha, which will be used as the basis for the composition of plastic products by complex petroleum chemistry.

During the primary recovery stage, reservoir drive comes from a number of natural mechanisms. These include: natural water displacing oil downward into the well, expansion of the natural gas at the top of the reservoir, expansion of gas initially dissolved in the crude oil, and gravity drainage resulting from the movement of oil within the reservoir from the upper to the lower parts where the wells are located. Recovery factor during the primary recovery stage is typically 5-15%.
While the underground pressure in the oil reservoir is sufficient to force the oil to the surface, all that is necessary is to place a complex arrangement of valves (the Christmas tree) on the well head to connect the well to a pipeline network for storage and processing. Sometimes pumps, such as beam pumps and electrical submersible pumps (ESPs), are used to bring the oil to the surface; these are known as artificial lift mechanisms.
Over the lifetime of the well the pressure will fall, and at some point there will be insufficient underground pressure to force the oil to the surface. After natural reservoir drive diminishes, secondary recovery methods are applied. They rely on the supply of external energy into the reservoir in the form of injecting fluids to increase reservoir pressure, hence replacing or increasing the natural reservoir drive with an artificial drive. Secondary recovery techniques increase the reservoir's pressure by water injection, natural gas reinjection and gas lift, which injects air, carbon dioxide or some other gas into the bottom of an active well, reducing the overall density of fluid in the wellbore. Typical recovery factor from water-flood operations is about 30%, depending on the properties of oil and the characteristics of the reservoir rock. On average, the recovery factor after primary and secondary oil recovery operations is between 35 and 45%.
The amount of oil that is recoverable is determined by a number of factors including the permeability of the rocks, the strength of natural drives (the gas present, pressure from adjacent water or gravity), and the viscosity of the oil. When the reservoir rocks are "tight" such as shale, oil generally cannot flow through but when they are permeable such as in sandstone, oil flows freely. The flow of oil is often helped by natural pressures surrounding the reservoir rocks including natural gas that may be dissolved in the oil (Gas oil ratio), natural gas present above the oil, water below the oil and the strength of gravity. Oils tend to span a large range of viscosity from liquids as light as gasoline to heavy as tar. The lightest forms tend to result in higher extraction rates.
Petroleum engineering is the discipline responsible for evaluating which well locations and recovery mechanisms are appropriate for a reservoir and for estimating recovery rates and oil reserves prior to actual extraction.

10. Kuwait Petrol Corporation -- 3.2 million barrels per day -In 1934 the Kuwait Oil Company was created by the companies we know today as BP and Chevron. Over the next 40 years, exploration and development expanded the production potential of the Kuwaiti oilfields. In 1975, the Kuwait government took over the Kuwait Oil Company and by 1980 had nationalized the oil industry under the new Kuwait Petroleum Organization (KPO).
9. Chevron -- 3.5 million barrels per day -The discovery of oil in California in 1879 led to the creation of the Pacific Coast Oil Company (PCOC). Over the following decades, the PCOC joined other companies and experienced reorganization and several name changes. In 1984, now known as Standard Oil of California, the company merged with Gulf Oil in what was the biggest merger of that time. The following reorganization saw the company renamed Chevron Corporation.
8. Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) -- 3.6 million barrels per day -In the early 20th century, American and British oil companies were developing and refining petroleum in Mexico. The Mexican government saw the potential in such industry and moved quickly to support striking oil workers in 1938. Citing the Mexican Constitution, the government took over all foreign facilities and nationalized the oil industry.
7. Royal Dutch Shell -- 3.9 million barrels per day -One of the largest gas companies in the world, Royal Dutch Shell was created in 1907 by the merging of Royal Dutch Petroleum and the Shell Transport and Trading Company of Britain. Perhaps best known in North America for its gas stations, automotive oils and association with Formula One racing, Shell's oil and gas interests stretch across the globe.
6. BP -- 4.1 million barrels per day -British Petroleum's origins date back to 1909 with the start-up of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. Over the years the company changed names and expanded its drilling operations from the Middle East to Alaska and the North Sea. At one time, the company was the second largest oil company in the world. After the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, however, the company sold off a number of assets to help pay for the $4.5 billion in penalties, fines and legal fees.
5. PetroChina -- 4.4 million barrels per day -This Chinese state-controlled company is likely to move up this list quickly in the coming years. PetroChina is the largest Chinese oil and gas company. Founded in 1999, this company's annual revenue is reportedly $325 billion, although this figure will likely be much higher once recent market data is released. In worldwide development, PetroChina is involved in Africa, in Australia, where it signed a $50 billion contract for Australia natural gas,
4. ExxonMobil -- 5.3 million barrels per day -This company has its origins in John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company. When Rockefeller was forced to break up his company because of antitrust laws in 1911, two of the companies created were Jersey Standard and Socony. Over the years these two companies transformed into Exxon and Mobil, respectively.
3. National Iranian Oil Company -- 6.4 million barrels per day -The National Iranian Oil Company holds third place among the world's largest oil and gas producers. This company has its origins in the early 20th century when the British discovered and successfully began exploiting Iran's oil with the Anglo-Persian Oil Company.
2. Gazprom -- 9.7 million barrels per day -Officially known as Open Joint Stock Company Gazprom, Gazprom is the world's largest natural gas company. Created in 1989, a majority of the company is held by the Russian state while a small portion is privately owned. The company was able to grow significantly in the 1990s thanks to the fact that Gazprom's chairman was appointed Prime Minister of Russia. Don't be fooled by the 'mere' $150 billion annual revenue and $40 billion annual profits of this company.

This company generates over $1 billion a day in revenue, produces the most barrels per day of any company and is sitting on the largest proven reserves in the world. American support for Israel in the 1970s led the Saudi Arabian government to push for a greater stake in the domestic oil industry.

The WTI Crude Oil market rose during the course of the session on Friday, testing the $40 handle. More importantly, we tested the shooting star from a couple of days ago, and of course the bottom of the uptrend line that we had recently broken. With this being the case, we have to see whether or not we break above the shooting star, and if we do this market could continue to go much higher and perhaps reach towards $50 next. Ultimately, if we form a resistant candle near it could be a selling opportunity but I have to admit that the candle during the session does look very bullish, so caution will have to be used. The WTI Crude Oil market rose during the course of the session on Friday, testing the $40 handle. More importantly, we tested the shooting star from a couple of days ago, and of course the bottom of the uptrend line that we had recently broken. With this being the case, we have to see whether or not we break above the shooting star, and if we do this market could continue to go much higher and perhaps reach towards $50 next. Ultimately, if we form a resistant candle near it could be a selling opportunity but I have to admit that the candle during the session does look very bullish, so caution will have to be used.

Is Tanzania being cheated out of oil and gas revenue?
Some of the world's biggest companies have signed deals with Tanzania, hoping to gain access to the huge reserves of oil and gas discovered in the Indian Ocean. However, a leaked contract between the government and the Norwegian and American giants Statoil and ExxonMobil has sparked controversy. NGOs and journalists claim the contract, signed in 2007 and amended in 2012, will give the government only 30-50% of profits instead of an expected 60-85%. But Tanzanian ministers say they have driven a hard bargain on all Production Sharing Agreements to get the best deal for the Tanzanian people. Rotary drilling is characterized as a method of drilling that employs a sharp, rotational drill bit to bite its way through the earth’s crust. One of the most effective and common methods of drilling, it is used in the construction, mining, and oil industries for its ability to cut through even the most challenging and hardest formations.
The rotary drill rig consists of a prime mover, hoisting equipment, rotating equipment and circulation equipment, all of which perform tasks crucial to drilling a well or hole.
With the help of pneumatics, hydraulics or an electric motor, high torque and rotation are transmitted from the prime mover to the drill, which sits on a mast above the hole.
Rotary drilling was first used for drilling oil wells in 1901 when Captain Anthony Lucas and Patillo Higgins applied it to their Spindletop well in Texas. By 1925, the rotary drilling method was improved with the use of a diesel engine. The first attempt at rotary drilling involved a device that sent a stream of water down a hollow shaft of the drill to remove cuttings. By 1925, the rotary drilling method was improved with the use of a diesel engine.
