The video covers in 14 minutes the nearly 5 hour city exploration of Cotonou/W-Africa which took place on Nov 11th at the Benin Biennale 2012. Cotonou has faced an incredible development and turned from a coastal village quickly into a capital city, prosperous and abounding. The city rapidly exceeded the borders established by the colonial power and the occidental way of understanding a city. Therefore new experimental ways of capturing Cotonou need to be explored to bring different insight into this place of rapid change and transition.
Organized by Benin Connexion and dérive - Society for Urban Research, dérive Connectée tried to connect the cities of Cotonou and Vienna by walking simultaneously on routes that met on certain points like places, bridges or crossings. The walk in Cotonou started and ended at Kora, the festival center of Benin Biennale 2012, a former shopping center in the Ganhi city district of Cotonou. Due to the simultaneous drifts in Benin and Vienna, the artistic discovery did not only connect cities and thoughts through virtual reality but also in real life by connecting the people taking part in both cities.
Using the Ushahidi platform Benin Connection and dérive - Society for Urban Research expanded the ongoing project "laboratoire dérive" into the social web, bringing it first to a test at the Biennale Benin 2012 and thereby proposing a modest way of thinking the city, its discovery and its documentation differently. One of the aims of laboratoire dérive 2.0 was to stimulate exchange and communication and help to put Benin more prominently on the internet map. Similar projects and exchanges after the Benin Biennale are in planning.

Cotonou is the economic capital of Benin, as well as its largest city. Its official population count was 761,137 inhabitants in 2006; however, some estimates indicate its population may be as high as 1.2 million. The population in 1960 was only 70,000. The urban area continues to expand, notably towards the west. The city lies in the southeast of the country, between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Nokoué.
In addition to being Benin's largest city, it houses many of its government and diplomatic services; thus, it is Benin's de facto capital, even though the official capital is Porto-Novo. The city is a major port, and is also home to an airport and a railway that links to Parakou. Other features of Cotonou include Cotonou Friendship Stadium, Cotonou Cathedral, Cotonou Central Mosque, the Ancien Pont Bridge and the 20-hectare Dantokpa Market, which has a commercial turnover of over a billion CFA Francs a day. The National University of Benin is located in Cotonou. Another familiar feature of the city is the motorcycle–taxis known as Zémidjans.

Benin 
i/bɨˈniːn/ (formerly, Dahomey), officially the Republic of Benin, is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Togo to the west, by Nigeria to the east and by Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. A majority of the population live on its small southern coastline on the Bight of Benin. The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo, but the seat of government is in Cotonou, the country's largest city. Benin covers an area of approximately 110,000 square kilometers (42,000 sq mi), with a population of approximately 9.05 million. Benin is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with substantial employment and income arising from subsistence farming.
The official language of Benin is French, however, indigenous languages such as Fon and Yoruba are commonly spoken. The largest religious group in Benin is Roman Catholicism, followed closely by Islam, Vodun and Protestantism. Benin is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie, the Community of Sahel-Saharan States, the African Petroleum Producers Association and the Niger Basin Authority.

The video covers in 14 minutes the nearly 5 hour city exploration of Cotonou/W-Africa which took place on Nov 11th at the Benin Biennale 2012. Cotonou has faced an incredible development and turned from a coastal village quickly into a capital city, prosperous and abounding. The city rapidly exceeded the borders established by the colonial power and the occidental way of understanding a city. Therefore new experimental ways of capturing Cotonou need to be explored to bring different insight into this place of rapid change and transition.
Organized by Benin Connexion and dérive - Society for Urban Research, dérive Connectée tried to connect the cities of Cotonou and Vienna by walking simultaneously on routes that met on certain points like places, bridges or crossings. The walk in Cotonou started and ended at Kora, the festival center of Benin Biennale 2012, a former shopping center in the Ganhi city district of Cotonou. Due to the simultaneous drifts in Benin and Vienna, the artistic discovery did not only connect cities and thoughts through virtual reality but also in real life by connecting the people taking part in both cities.
Using the Ushahidi platform Benin Connection and dérive - Society for Urban Research expanded the ongoing project "laboratoire dérive" into the social web, bringing it first to a test at the Biennale Benin 2012 and thereby proposing a modest way of thinking the city, its discovery and its documentation differently. One of the aims of laboratoire dérive 2.0 was to stimulate exchange and communication and help to put Benin more prominently on the internet map. Similar projects and exchanges after the Benin Biennale are in planning.

Ouidah, Benin and a bit of VooDoo
After my bout with malaria in Togo, I pushed across to the country of Benin. On my way to the capital of Benin, I made a stop at the historical town of Ouidah. Here in Ouidah, the slave trade was once the largest form of industry. Slaves would be taken in to town on boat, and then forced to walk the last couple miles to the sea where they would be picked up and shipped out. Ouidah too is meant to have a strong voodoo history. In this episode of It's my Life 365, I stopped in at the Ouidah Museum for a look into that history, but to be honest I was a little bit disapointed with the museum. Then there are the stilt villages, home to thousands in the southern lagoons, and the northern tata somba (fortlike mud huts) built by the insular Somba people. Not only is Benin a richly historical and cultural country, this politically stable nation is one of the easiest parts of West Africa to travel in.

After my bout with malaria in Togo, I pushed across to the country of Benin. On my way to the capital of Benin, I made a stop at the historical town of Ouidah. Here in Ouidah, the slave trade was once the largest form of industry. Slaves would be taken in to town on boat, and then forced to walk the last couple miles to the sea where they would be picked up and shipped out. Ouidah too is meant to have a strong voodoo history. In this episode of It's my Life 365, I stopped in at the Ouidah Museum for a look into that history, but to be honest I was a little bit disapointed with the museum. I was hoping for it to have more to talk about in regards to the Voodoo culture in Benin.
Anyways, I end the day in the capital of Benin: Cotonou.

Egypt’s chief prosecutor and the Paris prosecutor have ordered an “urgent investigation” into the crash of EgyptAir Flight 804, which crashed in the Mediterranean on Thursday with 66 people aboard en route from Paris to Cairo, Breitbart reported. Egyptian Aviation Minister Sherif Fathi said a terrorist attack was more likely to have taken down the missing EgyptAir aircraft early Thursday morning rather than technical failure, Gulf News Egypt reported. There were no known security concerns about passengers aboard the missing plane, but further checks are underway ... The plane was due to arrive at 3.05 a.m. local time....
