This song was lyrically inspired by a real-life event where a KISS fan was killed on his way to a KISS concert in Charlotte, NC during the "Dressed To Kill" tour in April 1975. It's interesting that a song celebrating KISS' Detroit connection is based on a sad event in North Carolina! According to Paul, "We were headlining in Detroit when we were barely known anywhere else. I wrote 'Detroit Rock City' as a tribute to a city that, historically, has championed real rock 'n roll" (KISS Exciter, 3/93). "Detroit Rock City" was almost a rewriting of earlier material, combining elements of "Two Timer" and some of the basic song structure of the "Much Too Young" part of "Acrobat." Bob Ezrin was also responsible for other aspects of "Detroit Rock City," as well as the creative introduction, inclu...
Written by Gerard McMahon in 1979. Gerard's musical history stretched back into the 1970s where he had been the keyboard player on Jimmy Ibbotson's "Nitty Gritty Ibbotson" solo album in 1977. Gerard's manager was looking for a producer and considered Vini Poncia a possibility. As a result, Vini heard several McMahon demos, and liked "Is That You?" enough to take it to KISS for consideration. The band, particularly Paul, loved the song and decided to use it on the album. "Is That You?" was released as a single in several markets, notably Australia and Holland, but it didn't make any impact on the charts. In Australia the single was only on sale for a few short weeks in October 1980, before being deleted, making it one of the rarest singles, along with Gene's "Radioactive," in the Australian...
This second of the pre-KISS and later core songs was written before Peter Criss came into the picture. Like many other "collaborations," Paul borrowed the chord pattern from Gene's earlier "Stanley The Parrot" song and developed a new piece. According to Paul: "Once we picked up the tempo of it and started playing a lot of suspended chords, the song developed a real Stones-y kind of feel" (Box Set liners). Paul saw the lyrics as describing the glam movement of early 1970s New York, along with the strutting style of the song's music. Lyrically, the song is mostly Paul's creation, though Gene added the song's riff to the older original chord structure. Ace also latter had input on the song: "I wrote those inverted chords, and I think they were a great addition to the song. It's funny, but P...
One of these ideas came from Wicked Lester's cover of The Hollies "I Wanna Shout." Gene remembers that the "shout it, shout it, shout it out loud" part of the song just came naturally when Bob and Paul were playing around with some chord ideas on Bob's piano. However, he could possibly also admit that he liked the anthem-like possibilities of the Hollies' original, which that original lacked and that KISS had tried to pursue. Bob believes that this song best captures the "Destroyer" era of KISS, the interplay of the members, and the creativity of the band. Bob recalled in an interview with KISS online, "The thing just took off... We knew exactly what that song was going to sound within half an hour." Another reflection of Wicked Lester, though not of their cover of "I Wanna Shout" was Gene...

When Miami's Robb Bank$ and Memphis' Chris Travis released their collaborative 'No Trespassing' EP earlier this year, it racked up over a million plays on Soundcloud. After covering both Robb and Chris on Masked Gorilla since 2012, we knew it was the perfect time to bring them together in concert for the first time and have them touch down on our UNMASKED stage. The two rappers sold out the concert with ease, but they managed to make their performance look even easier. The two intertwined their sets, rapping back and forth with each other the entire night. We spoke with the two artists before they hit the stage about how they started rapping, when they started to gain traction, and what their rise in the scene has been like. Imagine being able to know about Jay Z before he released his de...
To some of you, Pouya, may already be your favorite rapper. To others, he may be that new guy you get to tell all your friends about. After covering his come up straight from Miami for the last few years, we had to fly him, Fat Nick, Germ, and the whole Buffet Boys crew out to Los Angeles so they could headline an UNMASKED show. With a packed crowd, Pouya showed everyone what we already knew, that he’s next up. Imagine being able to know about Jay Z before he released his debut album, before he ever graced a single TV screen, magazine cover, or had the hottest chick in the game wearing his chain. You could share his music with your friends, converting them to fans of this rapper they never heard of before. That’s what Masked Gorilla is all about, introducing you to your favorite rapper be...
This was yet another track that challenged the band, especially Peter. The song forced the band to play with an unusual 7/8 time change in the center part of the song. This time change caused the band no end of difficulty during the recording, but they would survive by making Peter's drumming part as simple as possible. The song was originally a piece written by Kim Fowley and Mark Anthony, manager and guitarist/vocalist, respectively, in the band The Hollywood Stars. Mark allowed the song to be placed with KISS and the resulting money helped him keep his own band going. This connection with Ezrin had also resulted in the placement of another song with Alice Cooper. According to Gene the band felt that the song fit them pretty well, though Paul has suggested that there was work done on t...
As was commonplace with many songs credited to both Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, "Rock And Roll All Nite" was a hybrid of two separate ideas. Paul had written a chorus at the Continental Hyatt Hotel in Los Angeles at the end of the "Hotter Than Hell" tour. According to Paul, "When I came up with the chorus for 'rock and roll all night, and party every day,' I knocked on Gene's door and said, 'I think I've got it, this so-called anthem we need.' Gene came and said, 'Well, I have this song, 'Drive Us Wild.'' We put them together and lo and behold had a song that spawned a whole viewpoint, which was writing a song that embodied the philosophy of the band and the people who love the band" (Billboard - Clay Marshall). The song was ultimately a result of Neil Bogart's suggestion that the band...
This song was originally recorded by the British band Hello (from Tottenham, London) in 1975. The members of this band included Bob Bradbury (Guitar & Lead Vocals), Keith Marshall (Guitar & Vocals), Jeff Allen (Drums and Vocals), and Vic Faulkner (Bass). The song was a Russ Ballard composition, which was inspired by Russ' return to New York in 1975, though the song wasn't written until Russ was in the studio working with the band. Produced by Mike Leander, the Hello version of "New York Groove" was released as a single and was a hit in Germany, spending 19 weeks on the charts and reaching #7. The song was included on the 1976 album "Keeps Us Off The Streets." Ace's version barely differs from the original recording and stands as the only hit from the five singles released from the KISS s...
This was one of the earliest songs Gene and Paul wrote together, even though the writing was credited solely to Paul. According to Paul, "Gene came up with the riff that's incorporated into the chords" (Guitar World, 8/92). The collaboration goes a bit further with Gene originally having intended to write a song using the title only to have Paul write a song with the title before Gene could finish writing his own song! Essentially, the song is about a black prostitute and New York street life in general, though, as would be the case with many early songs "Black Diamond" is more about the big guitar sound that Paul and Ace worked hard to get. Whereas "Deuce" is Gene Simmons' version of the Rolling Stones' "Bitch," this could be said to be Paul Stanley's version of "Brown Sugar." Clocking in...
Kiss live in Auckland city, New Zeland, December 3rd, '80; Unmasked tour, awesome soundboard quality To continue, a quite special upload, Ace Frehley's last full-length show until the '96 reunion (Last show of the Unsmasked tour); And, so far, my favourite KISS show! Gene Simmons' bass guitar can finally be heard here (Soundboard rocks), of course, sounding great (He's quite the understimated bass player), plus, his vocals are truly amazing (Calling Dr. Love), even though he's only singing 3 songs; Paul Stanley is truly AMAZING here, his vocals are good as fuck, never seen such a great performance by Paulie, hitting all high notes and even singing all the falsetto lyrics (His voice during the 80's was the best ever); The new drummer, Eric Carr, the fox, is my favourite drummer on Kiss, and...

Jack the Ripper This is very nice - a must watch!
In June 1980, at age 11, rock journalist (or kid at the time) MITCH LAFON sat down with KISS' GENE SIMMONS to discuss the following topics 'Why does KISS wear make-up?' and what were 'Gene's thoughts on bootleggers'. However, the interview starts off with Marianne Stenbaek (Mitch's mom) speaking with Gene about KISS' 'new' album UNMASKED, their new style in music and concert presentation, and was KISS more about the show than the music. Gene, for his part, brings up The KISS World travelling amusement park, The KISS Unmasked World Tour, The 'possibility' of a Peter Criss solo album and answers the question on everybody's mind back in those days - why did Peter Criss leave? The interview took place at AUCOIN management in New York City (June 1980) and Gene was NOT wearing make-up. Interes...
