250 Greatest NBA Players of All-Time (225-201)
**All stats accurate as of Sept.
2012, when list was completed**
**LIST OF PLAYERS IN THIS SEGMENT SHOWN BELOW**
Greatness is not achieved in a day
.......or with regards to this list, not even in 4 or 5 years in most cases. Consequently, there are only
two players on this list who have played fewer than 5 seasons; only three players have played fewer than 400 regular season games. A mere handful have played fewer than 8 seasons.
My ranking is based on CUMULATIVE achievement. So things like durability, consistency, and longevity count for a lot.
And I will not speculate about what some fantastic young players WILL accomplish before their careers are over.
It's based on what they've accomplished up to this
point. All I can say is CURRENT PLAYERS HAVE NO WHERE TO GO BUT UP on my list.
This is my own personal ranking, and I based it on a variety of criteria (some of which I share within the video), including individual stats---not just averages, but also TOTALS. I do not penalize a player for playing a few seasons past his prime (thus lowering his career averages), but rather reward him for climbing further in his career totals. I see no sense in lowering the rank of a formerly great player because he chooses to play a few extra (if relatively ineffectual) seasons, especially considering the amazing work ethic and discipline that must be necessary to keep an old body competitive in a league such as the
NBA.
Individual stats are weighted against team success (both regular season and playoff). Because it's one thing to average 20 and 8 for a team that struggles to reach .400......quite another to do the same for a team that is a championship contender.
Also considered are accumulated awards and honors (All-Star selections,
All-NBA team selections, etc).
Greater consideration is given to more recent players where these things are concerned, simply because the league is more competitive now, based on shear numbers alone: in its infancy, the NBA was (mostly) made up of only 8-11 teams, compared to 30 teams today. So it's easy to see that things like All-Star or All-NBA team selections, as well as NBA titles, are much more difficult to obtain in the modern era.
I tried to "measure" the above criteria with some degree of objectivity.
The last piece of my criteria is a purely subjective assessment of a players reputation, legacy, and/or impact upon the game.
btw--If you want to read all the stats, etc, be prepared to speed-read. I really move things along, as 250 players is a lot to get thru, and I don't want these videos to be too long. If you're not interested in the stats, just enjoy the list and the photos/videos.
