Total order

In mathematics, a linear order, total order, simple order, or (non-strict) ordering is a binary relation on some set X, which is transitive, antisymmetric, and total (this relation is denoted here by infix ≤). A set paired with a total order is called a totally ordered set, a linearly ordered set, a simply ordered set, or a chain.

If X is totally ordered under ≤, then the following statements hold for all a, b and c in X:

Antisymmetry eliminates uncertain cases when both a precedes b and b precedes a. A relation having the property of "totality" means that any pair of elements in the set of the relation are comparable under the relation. This also means that the set can be diagrammed as a line of elements, giving it the name linear.Totality also implies reflexivity, i.e., a ≤ a. Therefore, a total order is also a partial order. The partial order has a weaker form of the third condition. (It requires only reflexivity, not totality.) An extension of a given partial order to a total order is called a linear extension of that partial order.

Chain (Paul Haig album)

Chain was Edinburgh musician Paul Haig's third album and was released in May 1989 on Circa Records, a subsidiary of Virgin Records. Chain, which Haig financed himself, was recorded and completed in 1988, but it sat on the shelf after the normally accommodating Les Disques Du Crepuscule decided not to take up the option of releasing it. The album was co-produced by long-time Haig cohort, Alan Rankine, instrumentalist with celebrated Dundee band, The Associates. There was another Associates connection on the album - the track "Chained" was written by Haig's good friend, Billy Mackenzie. Haig returned the favour and gave Mackenzie the track "Reach The Top" for his album The Glamour Chase, which after many years in limbo was finally released in 2002.

One single, "Something Good", was taken from the album, but much to Circa's disappointment, neither the single nor the album sold in great numbers.

The sleeve features a shot of Audrey Hepburn, taken by the celebrated photographer, Angus McBean in 1958.

Chain (caste)

The Chain, sometimes also pronounced as Chai, are cultivating and fishing caste found in eastern Uttar Pradesh in India. They are a sub-group within the larger Kewat communinity of North India.

Origin

The Chai according to some traditions, were a community of Vaishyas, who lost caste, when they took to fishing. Other traditions make them out to be a branch of the Bind caste, and the two communities intermarry, with suggests a common origin. They are now recognized as a sub-group within the Kewat community, and they intermarry with other Kewat clans such as the Banaphar and Dhivar. The majority of the Chai are now cultivators, with a small number still employed as boatmen on the Ganges. They are Hindu, and have customs similar to other Kewat groups.

The Chai are found mainly in southern and eastern Uttar Pradesh, with concentrations in Mirzapur, Ghazipur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Basti and Faizabad. They speak Awadhi, although most also understand Hindi.

Dangerously in Love

Dangerously in Love is the debut studio album by American recording artist Beyoncé. It was released on June 20, 2003 by Columbia Records. During the recording of Destiny's Child's third studio album, Survivor (2001), the group announced that they would produce solo albums to be released. Recording sessions for the album took place from March 2002 to March 2003 at several studios, during the hiatus of her then-group Destiny's Child. As executive producer of the album, Beyoncé took a wider role in its production, co-writing a majority of the songs, choosing which ones to produce and sharing ideas on the mixing and mastering of tracks.

The tracks in the album are a mixture of uptempos and ballads, which are basically inspired by R&B and soul genres; it also features elements of hip hop and Arabic music. Although Beyoncé remained discreet about her interpretation of the songs, its underlying meanings were attributed by music writers as an allusion to her intimate relationship with boyfriend (later husband) and well-known music mogul Jay-Z. Dangerously in Love received positive reviews from music critics upon its release, with critics praising Knowles' "artistic leap". The album also received numerous accolades, earning Beyoncé five Grammy Awards.

Signs (journal)

Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society is a peer-reviewed feminist academic journal. It was established in 1975 by Catharine R. Stimpson, and is published quarterly by the University of Chicago Press.

Scope

Signs publishes essays examining women's and men's lives around the globe from both historical and contemporary perspectives, as well as theoretical and critical articles addressing processes of racialization, sexualization, and gendering. In 2015, Signs launched the "Feminist Public Intellectuals Project," which seeks to engage feminist theorizing with pressing political and social problems via three open-access, online-first initiatives: "Short Takes," "Currents," and "Ask a Feminist." Given the fragmentation of feminist activism and the persistent negative freighting of the moniker “feminist,” the "Feminist Public Intellectuals Project" seeks to genuinely reimagine what role a journal can play in provoking activism.

History

From 1975-1980, the founding editor-in-chief of Signs was Catharine R. Stimpson (Barnard College). From 1980-1985, the editor-in-chief was Barbara C. Gelpi (Stanford University). From 1985-1990, the editor-in-chief was Jean Fox O'Barr (Duke University). She was succeeded from 1990-1995 by Ruth-Ellen Boetcher Joeres and Barbara Laslett (University of Minnesota). From 1995-2000, the editors-in-chief were Carolyn Allen and Judith A. Howard (University of Washington), they were replaced in 2000 by Sandra Harding and Kathryn Norberg (University of California, Los Angeles), they served until 2005 when they were replaced by Mary Hawkesworth (Rutgers University). Since 2015, Suzanna Danuta Walters (Northeastern University) has been editor-in-chief. The journal was called "prestigious" in a French review article of women's studies in America.

Signs (Five Man Electrical Band song)

"Signs" is a song by the Canadian rock group Five Man Electrical Band. It was written by Les Emmerson and popularized the relatively unknown band, who recorded it for their second album, Good-byes and Butterflies in 1970. "Signs" was originally released that year as the B-side to the relatively unsuccessful single "Hello Melinda Goodbye" (#55 Canada).

Re-released in 1971 as the A-side, "Signs" reached No. 4 in Canada and No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 24 song for 1971. It became a gold record.

"Signs" was covered and recorded live by Tesla for their Five Man Acoustical Jam album in 1990, peaking at number 8 on the Pop charts. This cover had some minor changes to the lyrics: the line "blockin' out the scenery" was changed to "fuckin' up the scenery," and "made up my own little sign" was changed to "made up my own fuckin' sign". A studio version recorded in 2007 used the original lyrics.
