Tunu, originally Østgrønland ("East Greenland"), was one of the three counties (amt) of Greenland until 31 December 2008. The county seat was at the main settlement, Tasiilaq. Population in 2005 was around 3,800.
The county was made up of two former municipalities, Ammassalik Municipality and Illoqqortoormiut, while part of the Northeast Greenland National Park covered the northern half of the county.
It was bordered in the east by the Greenland Sea, Norwegian Sea, Denmark Strait and the North Atlantic Ocean. To the west lies Kitaa.

Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat [kaˈlaːɬit ˈnunaːt]; Danish: Grønland [ˈɡ̊ʁɶnˌlanˀ]) is an autonomous country within the Danish Realm, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers, as well as the nearby island of Iceland) for more than a millennium. In 2008, the people of Greenland passed a referendum supporting greater autonomy; 75% of votes cast were in favour. Greenland is the world's largest island, over three-quarters of which is covered by the only permanent ice sheet outside of Antarctica. With a population of about 56,480 (2013), it is the least densely populated country in the world.
Greenland has been inhabited off and on for at least the last 4,500 years by Arctic peoples whose forebears migrated there from what is now Canada.Norsemen settled the uninhabited southern part of Greenland beginning in the 10th century, and Inuit peoples arrived in the 13th century. The Norse colonies disappeared in the late 15th century. In the early 18th century, Scandinavia and Greenland came back into contact with each other, and Denmark-Norway affirmed sovereignty over the island.
East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.

A violent Piteraq storm strikes Kuummiut village in March 2011. The Piteraq is a katabatic wind. Intensely cold heavy air drains off the Greenland ice cap. The cold descending air is channelled through the valleys and can blow at 40-80 metres per second. The Piteraq is characterised by deep blue skies, intense sunlight, clear dry air and much blowing snow which can obscure visibility. Most people stay indoors during a Piteraq. This Piteraq followed a period of overcast weather and heavy snowfall. The Piteraq strips the snow from the land and breaks up the fjord pack ice. **********************MORE INFO********************** Hello Lovelies, I've been away for a while but here is a treat for you until I am back in the states!!! This is only episode 1 of my trip to Tonga. It's been a GREAT experience coming back to my homeland and seeing the house I grew up in to the school that I attended. Everything here seems to be the way that I remember even the faces of the ones I love. They seem to never really age here as if I'm stepping into a time machine. I've enjoyed visiting our plantation that I used to run around freely in with my siblings. Swinging on vines pretending to be 'George of the Jungle' to feeding the pigs that we would later kill and eat. HAHAHA. These were the days! Days without social media, days where we didn't really talk back to our parents,...

Originally I'd planned a trip to Ammassalik Island, East Greenland to do an 80km or so trail around the south west of the island along with a little more exploring to over 2 weeks on the island. However a few months before the trip I badly injured my back which was slow to recover, I lost fitness and so the originally planned trip was't an option. So this is a video of footage and pictures taken around the hills and waters near Tasiilaq, the main settlement of the area which I explored during my stay. The weather was dry and scorching hot (up to 29c) which I didn't expect, the midgies, mozzies and black fly were a pain, but it was a fantastic trip to a wonderful part of the world. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of Greenland an check out my blog www.moder-dye.blogspot.co.uk for more inf...

During the morning of March 20, 2015, a total solar eclipse will be visible from the Faroe Islands, located northwest of Scotland, and the Svalbard Islands, located east of Greenland. At the same time, surrounding regions of Europe, northern Africa and northern Asia will be treated to a partial solar eclipse. From well beyond the Moon's far side, the shadow appears circular. The central black dot is the umbra, where the Sun is completely covered by the Moon. The fainter, much larger shadow is the penumbra, where the Sun is only partially obscured. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Twitter: https://twitter.com/Cloud_Tube ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Google +:...
Greenlandic is an Eskimo–Aleut language spoken by about 57,000 Greenlandic Inuit people in Greenland. It is closely related to the Inuit languages in Canada, such as Inuktitut. The main dialect, Kalaallisut or West Greenlandic, has been the official language of the Greenlandic autonomous territory since June 2009; this is a move by the Greenlandic government to strengthen the language in its competition with the colonial language, Danish. The second dialect is East Greenlandic. The Thule Inuit of Greenland, Inuktun or Polar Eskimo, is a recent arrival, and a dialect of Inuktitut. Greenlandic is a polysynthetic language that allows the creation of long words by stringing together roots and suffixes. Its morphosyntactic alignment is ergative, meaning that it treats the argument of an intrans...
