The Mysterious Rider is a 1938 American Western (genre) film directed by Lesley Selander and starring Douglass Dumbrille, Sidney Toler, and Russell Hayden. Written by Maurice Geraghty based on the 1921 novel The Mysterious Rider by Zane Gray, the film is about a notorious outlaw who returns to the ranch he once owned and takes a job disguised as a ranch hand. Unrecognized by the ranch's current owner, he waits patiently for an opportunity to expose the men who murdered his partner twenty years ago, framed him for the crime, and then stole his ranch. The film was later released for television in the United States as Mark of the Avenger.

Douglass Dumbrille
Douglass Dumbrille (October 13, 1889 – April 2, 1974) was a Canadian actor and one of the Canadian pioneers in early Hollywood.
Life and career
Douglass Dumbrille was born in Hamilton, Ontario. As a young man, he was employed as a bank clerk in Hamilton while pursuing an interest in acting. He eventually left banking to work with a stock company that led him to Chicago, Illinois, and a job with another stock company that toured the United States. In 1913, the East Coast film industry was flourishing and that year he appeared in the film What Eighty Million Women Want, but it would be another 11 years before he appeared on screen again. In 1924, he made his Broadway debut and worked off and on in the theatre for several years while supplementing his income by selling such products as car accessories, tea, insurance, real estate and books.
During the Great Depression, Dumbrille moved to the West Coast of the U.S. where he specialized in playing secondary character roles alongside the great stars of the day. His physical appearance and suave voice equipped him for roles as slick politician, corrupt businessman, crooked sheriff, or unscrupulous lawyer. A consummate professional, he was highly regarded by the studios and was sought out by Cecil B. DeMille, Frank Capra, Hal Roach and other prominent Hollywood filmmakers. A friend of fellow Canadian-born director Allan Dwan, Dumbrille played Athos in Dwan’s 1939 adaptation of The Three Musketeers.

An expedition into the deep jungle discovers a native tribe led by a tall white blonde woman.
Diamond mine owner Mark Harper (Douglass Dumbrille) hires pilot Steve Blake (Leif Erickson) and his pal Hoppy Owens (Frank Jenks)to search for a hidden jungle village from which the natives have made trouble for his mine operations. They crash near the village and discover that Meelah (Gale Sherwood), a white girl brought up by the natives after her parents had been killed for their property by Harper, is the head of the village. Returning to the mine, Harper, already suspicious of what they may have learned and jealous of the attention his wife, Connie Harper (Veda Ann Borg), is paying to Steve, has them jailed, while he leads an expedition against the village and Meelah.
