Wheelchair basketball was originally developed by World War II veterans in the USA in 1945. At the same time, Sir Ludwig Guttmann developed a similar sport, Wheelchair Netball, at the Spinal Rehabilitation Hospital in Stoke Mandeville.
Since then, the sport has grown worldwide and was introduced on the global stage at the Rome 1960 Paralympic Games, and today it is practiced in nearly 100 countries.
It is designed for athletes who have a physical impairment that prevents running, jumping and pivoting.
Men and women play on teams of five players each and the measurements of the court and the height of the baskets are the same as in able-bodied basketball.
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is committed to enabling Paralympic athletes to achieve sporting excellence and to develop sport opportunities for all persons with a disability from the beginner to elite level. Wheelchair netball
Wheelchair netball is a variation of netball adapted for play in wheelchairs. A hybrid version of basketball and netball was introduced at the Grand Festival of Paraplegic Sport in 1949. Six teams composed of 37 athletes competed at the event. This hybrid version of netball was played at every year's festival until 1954; it was replaced by wheelchair basketball in 1956.
Modern versions of wheelchair netball are similar to standard netball, but with modified rules regarding contact, obstruction and travelling.
