Isthmian Games or Isthmia (Ancient Greek: Ἴσθμια) were one of the Panhellenic Games of Ancient Greece, and were named after the isthmus of Corinth, where they were held. As with the Nemean Games, the Isthmian Games were held both the year before and the year after the Olympic Games (the second and fourth years of an Olympiad), while the Pythian Games were held in the third year of the Olympiad cycle.
The Games were reputed to have originated as funeral games for Melicertes (also known as Palaemon), instituted by Sisyphus, legendary founder and king of Corinth, who discovered the dead body and buried it subsequently on the Isthmus. In Roman times, Melicertes was worshipped in the region.
Theseus, legendary king of Athens, expanded Melicertes' funeral games from a closed nightly rite into fully-fledged athletic-games event which was dedicated to Poseidon, open to all Greeks, and was at a suitable level of advancement and popularity to rival those in Olympia, which were founded by Heracles. Theseus arranged with the Corinthians for any Athenian visitors to the Isthmian games to be granted the privilege of front seats (prohedria, Ancient Greek προεδρία). Another version states that Kypselos, tyrant of Corinth in the 7th century BC, returned to the Games their old splendour.
A game is structured form of play, usually undertaken for enjoyment and sometimes used as an educational tool. Games are distinct from work, which is usually carried out for remuneration, and from art, which is more often an expression of aesthetic or ideological elements. However, the distinction is not clear-cut, and many games are also considered to be work (such as professional players of spectator sports or games) or art (such as jigsaw puzzles or games involving an artistic layout such as Mahjong, solitaire, or some video games).
Key components of games are goals, rules, challenge, and interaction. Games generally involve mental or physical stimulation, and often both. Many games help develop practical skills, serve as a form of exercise, or otherwise perform an educational, simulational, or psychological role.
Attested as early as 2600 BC, games are a universal part of human experience and present in all cultures. The Royal Game of Ur, Senet, and Mancala are some of the oldest known games.
In everyday speech, a phrase may be any group of words, often carrying a special idiomatic meaning; in this sense it is roughly synonymous with expression. In linguistic analysis, a phrase is a group of words (or possibly a single word) that functions as a constituent in the syntax of a sentence—a single unit within a grammatical hierarchy. A phrase appears within a clause, although it is also possible for a phrase to be a clause or to contain a clause within it.
There is a difference between the common use of the term phrase and its technical use in linguistics. In common usage, a phrase is usually a group of words with some special idiomatic meaning or other significance, such as "all rights reserved", "economical with the truth", "kick the bucket", and the like. It may be a euphemism, a saying or proverb, a fixed expression, a figure of speech, etc.
In grammatical analysis, particularly in theories of syntax, a phrase is any group of words, or sometimes a single word, which plays a particular role within the grammatical structure of a sentence. It does not have to have any special meaning or significance, or even exist anywhere outside of the sentence being analyzed, but it must function there as a complete grammatical unit. For example, in the sentence Yesterday I saw an orange bird with a white neck, the words an orange bird with a white neck form what is called a noun phrase, or a determiner phrase in some theories, which functions as the object of the sentence.
The Nemean Games (Greek: Νέμεα or Νέμεια) were one of the four Panhellenic Games of Ancient Greece, and were held at Nemea every two years (or every third).
With the Isthmian Games, the Nemean Games were held both the year before and the year after the Ancient Olympic Games and the Pythian Games in the third year of the Olympiad cycle. Like the Olympic Games, they were held in honour of Zeus. They were said to have been founded by Heracles after he defeated the Nemean Lion; another myth said that they originated as the funeral games of a child named Opheltes. However, they are known to have existed only since the 6th century BC (from 573 BC, or earlier). The winners received a wreath of wild celery leaves from the city of Argos.
The various legends concerning its origin are related in the argumenta of the Scholiasts to the Nemea of Pindar, with which may be compared Pausanias, and Apollodorus. All these legends, however, agree in stating that the Nemea were originally instituted by the Seven against Thebes in commemoration of the death of Opheltes, afterwards called Archemorus. When the Seven arrived at Nemea, and were very thirsty, they met Hypsipile, who was carrying Opheltes (Grk Ὀφέλτης), the child of the priest of Zeus and of Eurydice. While she showed to the heroes the way to the nearest well, she left the child behind lying in a meadow, which during her absence was killed by a dragon. When the Seven on their return saw the accident, they slew the dragon and instituted funeral games to be held every third year. Other legends attribute the institution of the Nemean games to Heracles, after he had slain the Nemean Lion; but the alternative tradition was that he had either revived the ancient games, or at least introduced the alteration by which they were from this time celebrated in honour of Zeus.
It is now 20 years since the first Horrible Histories books – Awesome Egyptians and Terrible Tudors – were published, so the first generation of children exposed to the grisly sensibility of Terry Deary and the cartoonist Martin Brown may now have children of their own. The output in those two decades has been extraordinary: there are now more than 100 titles, which have sold 20 million copies (eight million of those in translation), to 31 countries. There are sticker books, annuals, Horrible Histories Top Trumps, mugs, video games, roadshows and a magazine that was launched last autumn. The CBBC series was a relative latecomer to the party in 2009; before that, in 2001-2, there were two series of an animated version that never really took off, then in 2006 the Birmingham Stage Company secured the stage rights and has been touring with Horrible Histories stage productions ever since.
Horrible Histories is an educational entertainment franchise encompassing many media including books, magazines, audio books, stage shows, TV shows, and more.

This video continues the series on Ancient Greek Athletics and how the early church intersected with them. Its focus is on the Isthmian Games, the main site the Apostle Paul and others disciples would have witnessed, and thus was the most impactful and influential in providing Paul (always under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) with many references for his Epistles. Understanding the Isthmian Games is foundational for any Sports Minister who wishes to accurately interpret and teach the athletic passages in Paul's Epistles. It is taught by Dr. Greg Linville Executive Director of CSRM.
Isthmia and its history are the subject of this video by Professor Tim Gregory, Professor of History at The Ohio State University.
After a short stay at Athens, Paul travels west about forty-six miles to Corinth, the most influential city in the province of Achaia. Corinth was a cosmopolitan mix of religions and cultures. The city was a great commercial center which every two years hosted the Isthmian Games, in honor of Poseidon. In Paul’s day, multiple temples dotted the city. These included one to Asclepius, the god of healing and to Aphrodite. The latter came with a large number of temple prostitutes. The city was known for its gross immorality. (I Corinthians 6:9-11) “Do you not know that the unrighteous well not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, not homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor exto...

The Apostle Paul used athletic terminology to convey spiritual truths in his epistles. These images included running, boxing, wrestling and chariot racing. This practical presentation will examine the word pictures in five passages from Paul's epistles that are illustrated by the Isthmian Games near Corinth. These intense athletic competitions took place every two years. Mr. Franz will show archaeological discoveries that depict various athletic events, arenas for competition, ancient coins and mosaics. Life lessons will be drawn from the word pictures for the life of the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is an amazingly practical presentation combined with archaeological evidences from the time of Paul. Athletes were rewarded with celery crowns, but the Christian runs the race with...

Historical One Minute brought to you by CelebrateGreece.com The naming and patronage of an ancient city in Greece (now Athens) was determined by a mythological contest between the Greek Goddess Athena and the Greek God Poseidon. The ancient games of Greece were: Olympic Games (Olympia, Greece) Nemean Games (Nemea, Greece) Pythian Games (Delphi, Greece) Isthmian Games (Isthmia, near Corinth, Greece) Panathenaic Games (Athens, Greece) You may see all the ancient games venues in videos at: http://www.celebrategreece.com/galleries/2-stock-footage/images/21

2012MAR02 God's Word is explaining to us that we have an appointment for a workout in the gym. God Himself wants to train us in how to live, walk, and grow in Christ. The Discipline of Integrity means we choose to do what God's Word says we are supposed to do. As Paul continues to relay God’s message to each of us, we remember from last time Paul used the highest level of emphasis that is possible to convey in the Greek language. Remember those bright colored words that stand for the emphasis God placed on them grammatically? We are each invited by The Lord to spend time each day: working out. This workout is illustrated by Paul with scenes from the culture of his day. Guided by the Spirit of God, Paul uses the examples of the three most well known sports from the gymnasium, and applies t...

Highlights of Dulwich's 3-3 draw with Hendon in the Bostik League Premier Division. Dulwich would somehow come away with a share of the points on a wet and windy Tuesday night after being outplayed for much of the 90 minutes, with a goal five minutes into injury time from Rickie Hayles making it 3-3. The home side would lead after six minutes, as a pass from Zak Joseph to Niko Muir saw the frontman turn and shoot across Preston Edwards into the far corner. However, the visitors drew level nine minutes later when Ashley Carew headed a Nathan Ferguson cross in via a deflection to bring up 50 goals in pink and blue. From this point Hendon went on to dominate, with Dave Diedhiou scoring an outstanding header before Muir had a goal disallowed for offside. However the striker would score again w...
Today's match focus comes from the Bostik North. These two promotion candidates have both shared the contrasting starts to the season. Whilst AFC Hornchurch have won five out of five, Maldon have only won half of their League games so far. But with Maldon having finished 2nd and only losing out in the play-offs last season, the quality is there to give Hornchurch some problems. Other match highlights include title favourites Billericay host newly promoted Brightlingsea Regent. Also newly promoted, Tooting & Mitcham travelled down to Burgess Hill Town. Whilst Dulwich took on Hendon in a top of the table clash. Highlights of Dulwich's 4-0 win over Merstham in the Bostik League Premier Division. The Hamlet arrived at the Moatside needing just a point to go top of the table, but would reach the summit in some style with a clinical performance. Merstham came flying out the traps and Preston Edwards had to make early saves against Alex Addai and Ryan Hall, an early sign he would be in for a busy evening. Against the run of play Dulwich took a lead in the 14th minute, as Reise Allassani picked out Tanasheh Abrahams with a cross, before the left-back centred for Nathan Ferguson to convert from close range. That lead would be doubled four minutes later as Ferguson played in Allassani, who strolled around Chris Haigh to score into an empty net. Addai then hit the outside of the post as the hosts looked f...
Today's match focus comes from the Bostik Premier League. These two teams have both struggled at the start of the season, both losing their first two games with Worthing sitting bottom of the table. Can they get their season going today, or will the home side Lowestoft add to their woes? Matchday Three: Lowestoft Town vs Worthing
Highlights of Dulwich's 1-1 draw against Folkestone in the Ryman League Premier Division. Despite beating their hosts 6-1 earlier in the season, Dulwich took on a side with the most home points in the division. As a fairly even first half was drawing to a close, which had seen a few chances for both sides, Invicta won a penalty when Ashley Miller was brought down by Kenny Beaney. Joe Taylor stepped up and duly converted. The second half saw the Hamlet pile on the pressure, but often wasteful with their finishing. It took until the 80th minute to draw level, with Dumebi Dumaka producing a majestic header for his sixth goal for the club. Neither side could find a winner, ensuring back-to-back draws for Dulwich ahead of four consecutive home games.
Highlights of Dulwich's 1-0 win against Thurrock in the Bostik League Premier Division. The Hamlet came into the game unbeaten in 11, whilst the hosts had an almost contrasting record, winning just once in 12 games, but early on were the more probing side, with plenty of half chances being sent the way of Preston Edwards's goal. The visitors looked slow in their build-up play and were wasteful with the ball, but would create a couple of decent chances of their own, with ex-Hamlet man Oshane Brown denying Sancehz Ming, and another shot taking a wicked deflection and hitting the crossbar. The solitary goal would come in the 40th minute, as Reise Allassani cut in from the left wing, produced a couple of stepovers to give him space, before he fired a drive inside Brown's near post. The second ...
Highlights of Dulwich's 4-0 win over Harlow Town in the Bostik League Premier Division. Coming into this game the Hamlet had picked up 13 points from their previous five games, whilst the Hawks had just won once away from home in the league this season, and the game would go to form. After little action in the first 16 minutes, Dulwich went ahead in sensational fashion, as Nyren Clunis followed up his goal at Staines Town with a similar strike, cutting in off the left flank and bending a shot beyond the reach of Ashlee Jones into the far corner. Sanchez Ming was denied low by Jones, before an Ashley Carew corner was eventually put into the net by unlikely scorer Michael Chambers for his third goal of the season. Jones had further saves to make in the half to deny Clunis and home debutant R...
Today's midweek-match focus came from the Bostik Premier Division. With both Dulwich and Hendon in fantastic form, it promised to be a tasty affair. Hendon had only lost one game in nine at home, winning seven; whilst Dulwich were unbeaten in nine away games also winning seven of those. A win for Dulwich would extend their lead at the top with Billericay right on their heels. For Hendon, it would boost their chances of getting into the play-offs this season. Today's match focus is an FA Cup special between two Bostik Premier sides. Worthing take on Dorking Wanderers in the 1st Round Qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup. Highlights of Dulwich's 3-1 win over Staines Town in the Ryman League Premier Division. After successive draws, the hosts arrived at Champion Hill knowing they needed three points from this fixture. After an opening spell which saw both sides create chances, it was Dulwich who took the lead through Dumebi Dumaka's seventh goal in 12 games for the club. That lead was to last just three minutes, as Staines broke away following a Hamlet corner, culminating in Mohamed Bettamer rifling in the equaliser. Hamlet were given a penalty early into the second half, which was duly dispatched by Vas Karagiannis, and then the game was to swing dramatically in the hosts' favour when Swans captain Tommy Brewer was dismissed for an elbow on Kenny Beaney. Dulwich ensured there would be no nerves by finding a...

Robin Friday was an English footballer who played professionally as a forward for Reading and Cardiff City during a career that lasted four years in the mid-1970s. His on-field performances were regarded as excellent, and he won Reading's player of the year award in both of his full seasons there, as well as being the leading goal scorer. However, his habit of unsettling opponents through physical intimidation contributed to a heavily tarnished disciplinary record, and his personal life was one of heavy smoking, drinking, womanising and drug abuse. Despite his short career, he remains prominent in the memory of Reading and Cardiff supporters, both as a player and a personality. He has been voted Reading's best ever player three times. Highlights of Dulwich's 2-1 win over Brightlingsea Regent in the Bostik League Premier Division. In the first ever meeting between the two sides, it would be the hosts who emerged victorious and kept their place at the top of the table after a trying few days off the field. The first half an hour passed without any incident of note, before Dulwich were awarded a penalty when Matt Cripps was deemed to have handled an Ashley Carew corner. Carew stepped up and duly dispatched the spotkick. If the first goal was a tad soft, the second was sensational, as Reise Allassani picked the ball up just inside the Regent half, burst past a couple of challenges before finishing across Harry Palmer for his 11th goal in 12 games for the side. Just as it seemed Dulwich were in control, Regent pulled a goal ...
