Roger Harding (1858 - 29 August 1901) was an Irish-born tenor who worked steadily as a featured soloist on records and as a member of duos, the Spencer Trio, and male quartets from early 1897 or so until his death.
Early in his career he toured with musical comedy and opera companies. He was also with Sam Devere's Own Company, a popular minstrel company led by blackface banjoist Sam Devere. As a recording artist he was versatile, undoubtedly a result of diverse experiences as a stage performer.
He cut sentimental songs (his own "Pretty Kitty Doyle" from 1897 is one example), lullabies ("Tom Dixon's Lullaby" on Berliner 1753), comic numbers (including "coon" songs such as "I Don't Care If You Nebber Comes Back" on Berliner 1783), musical comedy hits ("How I Love My Lou" from Pousse Café on Berliner 1864), even opera.
He made records for the two large cylinder companies of the late 1890s, Edison and Columbia., as well as for small companies. All of his cylinders were brown wax. Five Harding titles are listed in Columbia's June 1897 catalog, which states, "Mr. Harding's specialty is the rendition of high-class ballads and vocal numbers from the standard operas. He possesses a clear, high tenor voice of remarkable range and singular sweetness." Columbia's November 1896 catalog listed nothing by Harding; the 1898 catalog includes no Harding selections.
He made discs for Berliner and later--during a single session on June 10, 1901--for Eldridge R. Johnson's fledgling Consolidated Talking Machine Company, which months later was incorporated as the Victor Talking Machine Company.
He was a songwriter. At least 19 songs by Roger Harding were published between 1891 and 1900. Early ones were published by major firms, such as M. Witmark & Sons. Several were published in 1900 by his own small publishing firm. No Harding compositions were genuinely popular though several were recorded for Columbia by the tenor as well as by colleagues George J. Gaskin and Steve Porter. Harding sings a bit of his "My Sunny Southern Home" towards the end of Victor 3450, a record titled "A Southern Dialect Story--I've Been Down in Old Kentucky."
Like several other recording artists of the 1890s, he was an ambitious businessman. The February 1899 issue of The Phonoscope states, "Fred Hylands, Roger Harding, and Steve Porter are the enterprising young men who have recently organized a song publishing company under the name of the Knickerbocker Music Publishing Co." Hylands and Harding collaborated on at least two songs published in 1899 by Hylands, Spencer & Yeager (Harding wrote the lyrics, Hylands the music).
His professional activities are mentioned in various issues of the trade journal. The November-December 1897 issue of The Phonoscope lists him among the personnel of the Greater New York Quartet, which also included Steve Porter, Len Spencer, and a singer whose last name was "Depew" (the trade journal gave only last names, but this would not have been Chauncey Depew, who did make a few Berliner discs around this time--this prominent orator and railroad magnate was not likely to sing in a quartet for brown wax cylinder companies). The Greater New York Quartet afterwards underwent personnel changes though Harding and Porter evidently remained.
Harding performed in various quartets, including at some point the Manhansett Quartette. Jim Walsh states in the October 1962 issue of Hobbies that original members of the Edison Male Quartette, formed in the mid-1890s, were Roger Harding, J.K. Reynard, Dudley, and William F. Hooley. This evolved into the Haydn Quartet. Dudley and Harding recorded a duet for the Berliner Gramophone Company on the same day as the Haydn's debut for the disc company (on June 27, 1898), which suggests that Harding was a Haydn member at that time.
Colleagues who matched Harding in versatility and ambition--Porter, Dudley, Hooley, Len Spencer, Harry Macdonough, and a few others--would become increasingly important to a continually growing record industry. Harding's premature death of a viral infection (Victor's February 1902 catalog states that he died "very suddenly") removed from the industry a potentially major artist. His cylinders and discs are rare today.

Biography
Harding was born Roger Paul Harding on June 11, 1923 in Oakland, California.
Career
Harding was drafted in the fifth round of the 1945 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Rams and played with the team for two seasons, including during the franchise's move to Los Angeles, California. He would spend the following two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Detroit Lions before splitting the 1949 NFL season between the New York Bulldogs and the Green Bay Packers.
He played at the collegiate level at the University of California, Berkeley.

Len Spencer
Leonard Garfield Spencer (February 12, 1867 – December 15, 1914) was an early American recording artist. He recorded numerous popular songs in the pre-1920s, the most popular of which was "Arkansaw Traveler" (sic) (1902). The song is an early novelty record and consists of a back-and-forth banter with an Arkansas local who is playing a fiddle.

Roger
Roger is an English male given name and surname, from the Anglo-Norman French Roger, Rogier, which is itself derived from Germanic words (hroth, hruod and ger) meaning respectively "fame" and "spear". In Anglo-Saxon sources the name is first recorded, in the Dark Age epic poem Beowulf, as Hroðgar ("glorious spear-bearer").
The name is also found in the Netherlands in the form Rutger, and in German as Rüdiger. The Latin form, as used by a few medieval figures, is Rogerius. A Welsh variation is the family name Rosser.
Slang
Roger is also a short version of the term "Jolly Roger", which refers to a black flag with white skull and crossbones, formerly used by sea pirates since as early as 1723.
From c.1650 to c.1870, Roger was slang for the word "penis", probably due to the origin of the name involving fame with a spear. Subsequently, "to roger" became a slang verb form meaning "to have sex with"/"to penetrate".
In 19th century England, Roger was slang for the cloud of toxic green gas that swept through the chlorine bleach factories periodically.

Roger Harding (1858 - 29 August 1901) was an Irish-born tenor who worked steadily as a featured soloist on records and as a member of duos, the Spencer Trio, and male quartets from early 1897 or so until his death.
Early in his career he toured with musical comedy and opera companies. He was also with Sam Devere's Own Company, a popular minstrel company led by blackface banjoist Sam Devere. As a recording artist he was versatile, undoubtedly a result of diverse experiences as a stage performer.
He cut sentimental songs (his own "Pretty Kitty Doyle" from 1897 is one example), lullabies ("Tom Dixon's Lullaby" on Berliner 1753), comic numbers (including "coon" songs such as "I Don't Care If You Nebber Comes Back" on Berliner 1783), musical comedy hits ("How I Love My Lou" from Pousse Café on Berliner 1864), even opera.
He made records for the two large cylinder companies of the late 1890s, Edison and Columbia., as well as for small companies. All of his cylinders were brown wax. Five Harding titles are listed in Columbia's June 1897 catalog, which states, "Mr. Harding's specialty is the rendition of high-class ballads and vocal numbers from the standard operas. He possesses a clear, high tenor voice of remarkable range and singular sweetness." Columbia's November 1896 catalog listed nothing by Harding; the 1898 catalog includes no Harding selections.
He made discs for Berliner and later--during a single session on June 10, 1901--for Eldridge R. Johnson's fledgling Consolidated Talking Machine Company, which months later was incorporated as the Victor Talking Machine Company.
He was a songwriter. At least 19 songs by Roger Harding were published between 1891 and 1900. Early ones were published by major firms, such as M. Witmark & Sons. Several were published in 1900 by his own small publishing firm. No Harding compositions were genuinely popular though several were recorded for Columbia by the tenor as well as by colleagues George J. Gaskin and Steve Porter. Harding sings a bit of his "My Sunny Southern Home" towards the end of Victor 3450, a record titled "A Southern Dialect Story--I've Been Down in Old Kentucky."
Like several other recording artists of the 1890s, he was an ambitious businessman. The February 1899 issue of The Phonoscope states, "Fred Hylands, Roger Harding, and Steve Porter are the enterprising young men who have recently organized a song publishing company under the name of the Knickerbocker Music Publishing Co." Hylands and Harding collaborated on at least two songs published in 1899 by Hylands, Spencer & Yeager (Harding wrote the lyrics, Hylands the music).
His professional activities are mentioned in various issues of the trade journal. The November-December 1897 issue of The Phonoscope lists him among the personnel of the Greater New York Quartet, which also included Steve Porter, Len Spencer, and a singer whose last name was "Depew" (the trade journal gave only last names, but this would not have been Chauncey Depew, who did make a few Berliner discs around this time--this prominent orator and railroad magnate was not likely to sing in a quartet for brown wax cylinder companies). The Greater New York Quartet afterwards underwent personnel changes though Harding and Porter evidently remained.
Harding performed in various quartets, including at some point the Manhansett Quartette. The Delta Force is a 1986 American action-thriller starring Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin (in his final film) as leaders of an elite squad of Special Forces troops based on the real life U.S. Army Delta Force unit. It was directed by Menahem Golan and featured Martin Balsam, Joey Bishop, Robert Vaughn, Steve James, Robert Forster, Shelley Winters, and George Kennedy. The film was produced in Israel. Two sequels were produced entitled Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection and Delta Force 3: The Killing Game. The Delta Force is loosely based on the hijacking of TWA Flight 847.
