This was Bobby Vee's first and only #1 hit. Released on August 7th,1961, it immediately began to climb up the Billboard Charts, and by September 18th, 1961 it had reached #1, staying there for three weeks. It is no surprise, given it was written by the legendary Brill Building songwriting team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King, the song featured an irresistible melody along with inspired and sincere lyrics. Add to that an equally sincere and strong vocal performance by Bobby Vee and you have one of the greatest hits of all time.
I had the pleasure and honor of meeting Bobby Vee after a show four years ago, and he took the time to talk to my wife and I, and to sign a rare EP from Barcelona, Spain. He even commented that he had never seen it before. He also signed other items and took pictures, showing us what a kind and down-to-earth guy he really is. I'm glad I got the opportunity to shake his hand and to thank him for all the musical pleasure he had provided us over the years. So in his honor I give you this humble video.

Robert Thomas Velline (born April 30, 1943), known as Bobby Vee, is an American pop music singer. According to Billboard magazine, Vee has had 38 Hot 100 chart hits, 10 of which hit the Top 20.
Born in Fargo, North Dakota, to Sydney Ronald Velline and Saima Cecilia Tapanila, he had his first single with "Suzie Baby", an original song penned by Vee that nodded towards Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue" for the Minneapolis-based Soma Records in 1959; it drew enough attention and chart action to be purchased by Liberty Records, which signed him to their label later that year. His follow-up single, a cover of Adam Faith's UK number 1 "What Do You Want?", charted in the lower reaches of Billboard in early 1960; however, it was his fourth release, a revival of The Clovers' doo-wop ballad "Devil or Angel", that brought him into the big time with U.S. buyers. His next single, "Rubber Ball", was the record that made him an international star.
Vee's 1961 summer release "Take Good Care of My Baby" went to No.1 on the Billboard U.S. listings and number 3 in the UK Singles Chart. Known primarily as a performer of Brill Building pop material, he went on to record a string of international hits in the 1960s, including "Devil or Angel" (U.S. #6), "Rubber Ball" (1961, U.S. #6), "More Than I Can Say" (1961, U.K. #4), "Run to Him" (1961, U.S. #2), "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" (1963, U.S. #3), and "Come Back When You Grow Up" (U.S. #3). When Vee recorded "Come Back When You Grow Up" in 1967, he was joined by a band called "The Strangers".

Released on August 7th,1961, it immediately began to climb up the Billboard Charts, and by September 18th, 1961 it had reached #1, staying there for three weeks. Released on August 7th,1961, it immediately began to climb up the Billboard Charts, and by September 18th, 1961 it had reached #1, staying there for three weeks. It is no surprise, given it was written by the legendary Brill Building songwriting team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King, the song featured an irresistible melody along with inspired and sincere lyrics. Add to that an equally sincere and strong vocal performance by Bobby Vee and you have one of the greatest hits of all time.
I had the pleasure and honor of meeting Bobby Vee after a show four years ago, and he took the time to talk to my wife and I, and to sign a rare EP from Barcelona, Spain. He even commented that he had never seen it before. He also signed other items and took pictures, showing us what a kind and down-to-earth guy he really is. I'm glad I got the opportunity to shake his hand and to thank him for all the musical pleasure he had provided us over the years. So in his honor I give you this humble video.

From The Casanova Club in Coatbridge Scotland 1974. From a period where Bobby Vee had reverted to his given name, was penning his own songs again (see the wildly underrated NOTHIN' LIKE A SUNNY DAY - an LP backed by the Five Man Electrical Band and players like Red Rhodes (steel guitar) who gave James Taylors SWEET BABY JAMES album much of its flavor) Anyway, a sweet acoustic little record in the short lived singer/songwriter period of Bobby Vee's career. This lo-fi recording, with swirling Hammond B3 and soulful vocals is a indicator of what might have been the future of Bobby's sound had the record label done anything to promote the SUNNY DAY record. Indeed no one really recognized the name or the bearded face on the cover and consequently the LP pretty much disappeared. The few critics who did review it raved - Bobby once told me it even made it into a book in the early 70s published by Rolling Stone Press - "Best Albums You've Never Heard" or something like that.
Regardless, this cover is an interesting snapshot in time of his sound and choice of covers (Desperado as a song was only a year old at the time - other covers that night were Dylan's MAN IN ME and ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS.)

From The Album " Bobby Vee Meets The Ventures" "Walk Right Back" is a 1961 song by Sonny Curtis that was recorded by The Everly Brothers, and went to No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Overseas, the song went No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks.Originally it was the B-side, then it was changed to the A-side. In an interview he did with Jim Liddane of the International Songwriters Association . Sonny Curtis said about the song, "Well I wrote most of that one Sunday afternoon, while I was doing my basic training in California, just after I went in the army, although I had the guitar riff for a while. Joseph A. Angiolillo, Jr. is the author of the 2005 book: Gene Pitney, His Climb to International Success. Gene Pitney was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, and wrote hit songs for himself, The Crystals, Ricky Nelson and Bobby Vee. Pitney was from Rockville, CT, and his nickname "Rockville Rocket" was coined by Joey Reynolds when Reynolds worked at WPOP and WDRC in Hartford. Interview recorded 2006 at NHTV in North Haven. -

In an interview he did with Jim Liddane of the International Songwriters Association . Sonny Curtis said about the song, "Well I wrote most of that one Sunday afternoon, while I was doing my basic training in California, just after I went in the army, although I had the guitar riff for a while. And then Lady Luck stepped in. I never was much for guns, and still am not really into them, but out of 250 men in our unit in basic training, six of us fired expert, and I was one of the six! Anyway, for firing expert, they gave me a three-day pass, and I went straight down to Hollywood, and the Crickets were there, and so were Don and Phil, who were doing some acting classes for movies — they had just signed for Warner Brothers. So J.I. (Jerry Allison of the Crickets) told me to sing the song for Don — actually I had only one verse written — and Don called Phil down, and they worked out a gorgeous harmony part. So they said, 'If you write another verse. we'll record it'. Anyway, I went back to base, and wrote a second verse, and put it in the mail to them, and next morning, I got a letter from J.I. to tell me that the Everlys had already recorded the song before they got my letter — they had simply recorded the first verse twice! And that's the version that was released, and that's the version that was the hit! The joke is that Perry Como and Andy Williams and a whole bunch of others including myself, recorded the song with the second verse included, but when Anne Murray did it in 1978, she just did the same as the Everlys, just the one verse — and that was a big hit all over again — so maybe the second verse was never meant to be!" (It goes: "These eyes of mine that gave you loving glances once before, change to shades of cloudy grey. I want so very much to see you, just like before. I've got to know you're coming back to stay. Please believe me when I say, 'It's great to hear from you.' But there's a lot of things a letter just can't say, oh me. Walk right back to me this minute...," etc.)
In 1971, the song was covered by Harry Nilsson and in 1978, it was a country hit for Anne Murray.
Mud recorded the song for their Rock On album in 1978.

His garage band got it's start filling in for Buddy Holly the night after the fateful crash, and a few months later even boasted a young Bob Dylan as it's piano player. Soon after, in that window between Buddy Holly and the Beatles, Bobby Vee's voice was everywhere, a fixture of JFK era record and radio, unabashedly pop, but with a rock and roll pedigree. Fast forward 55 years to the day and you have this new (and final) release. In 2011 Bobby Vee was diagnosed with Alzheimers and soon retired from the stage. As a way to cope with this sobering news, the family bundled into an RV and drove from Minnesota to Vee's adobe hacienda in Tucson and set up shop "back in the garage again" to make one more record. There they played and recorded only the music most precious to them. More their "campfire set" than "stage set". Songs from treasured old family road trip mix tapes ("Walls" by Gordon Lightfoot), songs by old band mates ("The Man In Me" by Bob Dylan gets a hypnotic garage groove reading here), songs by old touring mates (Rick Nelson's "Never Be Anyone Else") even songs from the woman who custom wrote some of his biggest hits (Carole King and Gerry Goffin's "In My Baby's Eyes" a relative obscurity that first came to Vee in the same stack of acetate demos as "Take Good Care of My Baby". "Tucson Girl" is a hooky horn infused original that seems to have absorbed some musical textures from Vee's winter home. The gentle lovelorn ballad "Love Must Have Passed Me By" an original from Vee's first Minneapolis session in 1959, is recast as a duet with country/rockabilly journey woman Rosie Flores. Perhaps most out of character on a Vee record is Daniel Lanois' "The Maker", an ambitious reading of a spiritually searching song is understandable in it's inclusion considering where Vee stands at his stage of life, and it works. A group of Benedictine monks from St John's Abbey (near Vee's home) even add a chant to the mix.
With Vee's 3 sons as the band, daughter Jen as occasional lyricist, son Robby penning some tunes, these folks learned their craft from the first generation, and it shows with warm, rootsy readings, deft playing and for people more accustomed to Vee's 17 year old pipes, these 70 year old vocals are a rich and real surprise. An obvious labor of love, a tribute to a father and family that stands on it's own musical feet. The moral seemed to be - "Who knows what tomorrow holds, so lets make music and memories today"
Bobby Vee's "Adobe Sessions" is testament to that.
The digital release of the album should hit on Bobby's 55th professional anniversary February 3rd, 2014 with hard copy CDs available at CD Baby later in the month

Fast forward 55 years to the day and you have this new (and final) release. In 2011 Bobby Vee was diagnosed with Alzheimers and soon retired from the stage. As a way to cope with this sobering news, the family bundled into an RV and drove from Minnesota to Vee's adobe hacienda in Tucson and set up shop "back in the garage again" to make one more record. There they played and recorded only the music most precious to them. More their "campfire set" than "stage set". Songs from treasured old family road trip mix tapes ("Walls" by Gordon Lightfoot), songs by old band mates ("The Man In Me" by Bob Dylan gets a hypnotic garage groove reading here), songs by old touring mates (Rick Nelson's "Never Be Anyone Else") even songs from the woman who custom wrote some of his biggest hits (Carole King and Gerry Goffin's "In My Baby's Eyes" a relative obscurity that first came to Vee in the same stack of acetate demos as "Take Good Care of My Baby". "Tucson Girl" is a hooky horn infused original that seems to have absorbed some musical textures from Vee's winter home. The gentle lovelorn ballad "Love Must Have Passed Me By" an original from Vee's first Minneapolis session in 1959, is recast as a duet with country/rockabilly journey woman Rosie Flores. Perhaps most out of character on a Vee record is Daniel Lanois' "The Maker", an ambitious reading of a spiritually searching song is understandable in it's inclusion considering where Vee stands at his stage of life, and it works. A group of Benedictine monks from St John's Abbey (near Vee's home) even add a chant to the mix.
With Vee's 3 sons as the band, daughter Jen as occasional lyricist, son Robby penning some tunes, these folks learned their craft from the first generation, and it shows with warm, rootsy readings, deft playing and for people more accustomed to Vee's 17 year old pipes, these 70 year old vocals are a rich and real surprise. An obvious labor of love, a tribute to a father and family that stands on it's own musical feet. The moral seemed to be - "Who knows what tomorrow holds, so lets make music and memories today"
Bobby Vee's "Adobe Sessions" is testament to that.
The digital release of the album should hit on Bobby's 55th professional anniversary February 3rd, 2014 with hard copy CDs available at CD Baby later in the month
