Agnes Bernice Martin (March 22, 1912 – December 16, 2004) was an American abstract painter. Often referred to as a minimalist, Martin considered herself an abstract expressionist. Her work has been defined as an "essay in discretion, inwardness and silence".
She was awarded a National Medal of Arts from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1998.
Agnes Bernice Martin was born in 1912 to Scottish Presbyterian farmers in Macklin, Saskatchewan, one of four children. From 1919, she grew up in Vancouver. She moved to the United States in 1931 to help her pregnant sister, Mirabell in Bellingham, Washington. She preferred American higher education and became an American citizen in 1950. Martin studied at Western Washington University College of Education, Bellingham, Washington, prior to receiving her B.A. (1942) from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 1947 she attended the Summer Field School of the University of New Mexico in Taos, New Mexico. After hearing lectures by the Zen Buddhist scholar D. T. Suzuki at Columbia, she became interested in Asian thought, not as a religious discipline, but as a code of ethics, a practical how-to for getting through life. A few years following graduation, Martin matriculated at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, where she also taught art courses before returning to Columbia University to earn her M.A. (1952). She moved to New York City in 1957 and lived in a loft in Coenties Slip in lower Manhattan. She left New York City in 1967, disappearing from the art world to live alone. After eighteen months on the road, Martin settled in Cuba, New Mexico (1968-1977), and then Galisteo, New Mexico (1977-1993). She built an adobe home for herself in both locations. She lived alone all her adult life. In 1993 she moved to a retirement residence in Taos, New Mexico, where she lived until her death in 2004.
Actors: Simone Gad (actress), Liz Toonkel (miscellaneous crew), Brian Bress (actor), Mary Leigh Cherry (producer), Philip Martin (producer), Madison East (miscellaneous crew),
Plot: 20th Century reclusive artist and writer, Agnes Martin, takes a metaphysical car ride through the desert. Along the way she meets creatures that might be of her own making and might not. She waxes philosophy, art theory and more with her passengers and her mechanic, who she debates once in a while, when he pops his head up from working on the moving car.
Genres: Animation, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Short,Agnes Martin’s restrained yet evocative paintings came from her belief that spiritual inspiration rather than intellect created great work. In this film, which includes rare archive footage of the artist in her studio in New Mexico, her art dealer and confidant Arne Glimcher remembers Martin’s philosophical ideas about her work and her rigorous process in developing her paintings. Tate curator Frances Morris also reveals the mathematical precision behind Martin’s abstract masterpieces, and the intense experimentation which led to her signature grids.
The Art Channel explores the Agnes Martin exhibition at Tate Modern and analyses several major works. Martin was a painter who retreated from New York City to a solitary life in New Mexico in the 1970s, where she acquired a mythic status. But what do her abstract paintings communicate and how might we understand them? Grace Adam and Joshua White lead you through this significant exhibition.

Producer Actress (aka Darren J Cunningham) composed an original score inspired by Agnes Martin's artwork and journey across the USA. Agnes Martin is recognised for her evocative paintings and restrained style, which was underpinned by her deep conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art. In 1967, just as her art was gaining acclaim, Martin abandoned the artistic community in New York City and went in search of solitude and silence. For almost two years she traveled across the US and Canada before finally settling in New Mexico. From there within tightly prescribed limits she imposed on her own practice Martin was able to continue to make extraordinary, visionary paintings, for over three decades until her death in 2004. An emotional interview with the award winning post minimalist Richard Tuttle, known for his subtle, intimate works: "Artists they're from nature, they come out of nature, they're like the clouds that just happen." Being an artist is not like a disease, and it's not something, which can be cured via psychoanalysis either. Artists are a part of nature, like clouds that just happen, Tuttle explains. For Richard Tuttle personally art has always been his life, something he could not live without. Tuttle also explains that art is a human invention, a system which produces freedom, and which is necessary for keeping society healthy. The interview is as subtle and intimate as Tuttles work -- the artist invites us in for a glimpse of his childhood pain. Most artists have terrible childhoods, and ...

On Wednesday 15th July 2015, Nancy Princenthal discussed Martin’s formative experiences, the development of her work, and the range of lively non-mainstream art communities in which she lived. Renowned for her remarkable discipline and solitude, Agnes Martin led an extraordinary life. Born on a Canadian homestead in 1912, she didn’t settle in New York until 1957. Soon hailed as a leading Minimalist—despite insisting on a deeper connection with Abstract Expressionism—Martin left New York abruptly in 1967, roaming the Pacific Northwest in a camper. Her travels brought her back to New Mexico, where she remained until her death in 2004. Painting, as she said, with her “back to the world,” and managing mental illness that afflicted her throughout her adult life, she sustained a unique and subt...
