In August, al Nusra Front jihadists took control of Syria’s side of the border crossing with Israel and kidnapped over 40 United Nations peacekeepers — who have since been released.
But al Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-affiliate, isn’t Israel’s only threat from Syria. President Bashar al-Assad’s military, in a possible effort to bait Israel into its civil war to shore up Arab sympathies, has been lobbing mortars across the border. Just a few weeks ago, the Israeli military shot down a Syrian plane flying over the Golan Heights — the first time it has done so since the 1980s.
VICE News travels to Israel’s “quiet border” in the Golan Heights, where members of al Nusra Front are now a visible threat.

Israel is a nation of immigrants, and first-generation Israelis comprise only 32 percent of the population.
Integration into Israeli society has been one of its main political goals and, under the leadership of founding prime minister David Ben-Gurion, Israel was going to be "the great Jewish melting pot", but it has come under severe strain almost since its inception in 1948.
"There's a gap in Israeli society," says Karen Amit, an Israeli of Moroccan origin.
"They support the arrival of immigrants in theory and love them but, in practice, the ordinary Israeli doesn't open his arms to welcome them. Research about Israeli attitude towards immigrants from Ethiopia has shown surprising results. On the one hand, they love them and have no problem with them. But when asked if they'd accept an Ethiopian neighbour or their children being at school with Ethiopians, their reply was negative."
Jewish people living in Israel today are largely divided into three main groups: Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrahi.
The Ashkenazim are from Germany, France and Eastern Europe. The term "Ashkenazi" comes from the Hebrew word for Germany. Most American Jews today are Ashkenazim, descended from those who arrived from Europe in the mid-1800s and early 1900s.
The Sephardim are from Spain, Portugal, North Africa and the Middle East. The term "Sephardi" comes from the Hebrew word for Spain. Many Jews fled Spain after the end of Muslim rule there in 1492.
Sephardic Jews are often subdivided into Sephardim and Mizrahim, from North Africa and the Middle East. The term "Mizrahi" comes from the Hebrew word for eastern.
There are claims of discrimination against the Mizrahi community in Israel.
"Discrimination and inequality were always a common practice. Western [Ashkenazi] Jews look down on others. They don't want to grant the Mizrahis power ... They want to fill their prisons with them rather than offering them education, culture and guidance," says Pinhas Aloshi, an Israeli of Tunisian origin.
David Hetsroni, an Israeli of Polish origin, came to Israel in 1930.
"My father arrived the following year. He didn't get any help from the state but paid for everything out of his own pocket. But as soon as the Mizrahi Jews arrived, they started complaining they were being oppressed. They used to say, 'You send us to live in Dimona, in the south while you live in Tel Aviv and in the centre. You offer us poor jobs while you get all the decent ones.' We didn't make these allegations. That's what I find hard to accept. natural justice, in my view, says [the allegations] are not fair," Hetsroni says.
Yehouda Shenhav, an Israeli of Iraqi origin, believes that the situation of the third-generation Mizrahi Jews compared with Ashkenazis, is worse today than it was 30 years ago.
"In the Seventies, there was one Mizrahi with a baccalaureate diploma to three Ashkenazis. Four percent of Mizrahi got the baccalaureate compared with 16 percent of Ashkenazim. Today, the gap has widened to about 12 percent against 50 percent.
I re-invented myself as Israeli rather than Arab. The more you distance yourself from Arabness, the more chance you have of integrating into Israeli society. It's sad," says Shenhav.
Rabbi Haim Amsalam says personal progress often depends on whether your family name is Mizrahi or not.
"I know many people who've reached high-ranking positions. They had no choice but to adopt Ashkenazi speech and physical appearance and gradually adopt Ashkenazi culture .... The melting pot that Ben-Gurion wanted to create has failed, because he wanted to melt everyone into one culture, the Western, Ashkenazi one. Why should I abandon my culture and heritage?" says Amsalam.
Israel's Great Divide explores the deep-rooted tension between Israel's Ashkenazi Jews and the Sephardi and Mizrahi communities.

This is a very well done 2007 documentary with some great archival footage. For it not only documents the war itself, but more importantly events leading up to is and the dilemmas faced by main characters on both sides of the conflict -- Israeli PM Levi Eshkol on one side and Egyptian leader Nasser on the other. Both of these leaders were exposed to some pretty intense pressures and the documentary does a terrific job retracing all the steps, exposing the sources of pressure, motivations behind them, etc.
The other great thing about this documentary is that it also brings in a number of eye witnesses from both sides, who are all pretty frank about their assessment. It's interesting to hear the commentaries from the point of view of Nasser's secretary, high-ranking Soviet officials, Syrian student in Cairo, Egyptian soldier, U.S.-born Palestinian journalist in Jerusalem, Jordanian commanders, UN commander, CIA officials, U.S. government officials, Israeli generals, soldiers and fighter pilots as well as Israeli civilians. This really puts it in even greater perspective.
The other interesting thing is how this documentary illuminates the misinformation and bias about the real state of affairs perpetuated by many Arab governments and media. It's interesting to hear Nasser boasts with almost sure victory in a conflict he instigated based on flawed intelligence from the Russians. He's touting the strengths of his armies which are ready for war, unaware that the war had already begun. Yet, when it's all over he refuses to take responsibility, blames the Brittish and the Americans for intervening on behalf of Israel even when the Israelis have clear evidence from an intercepted phone call between Nasser and King Hussein of Jordan plotting how to find a scape goat for their own folly.
But it also looks at the war and its outcome as the seed of the current conflict, the occupation of West Bank and Golan Heights, the land for peace principle and the general trauma that the war inflicted on the Arab world. I think this is a very valid point, which is no doubt controversial among Israelis as well as in the Arab world, but it effectively illustrates how we got to where we are now.
The authors got access to some pretty unique archival war footage, most of it from the Israelis. The one incident the documentary does not cover or even mention is the controversial sinking of the USS Liberty, US Navy electronic intelligence ship. In any case, this is definitely a must-see documentary for anyone interested in the Middle East and wars in general. I certainly recommend it

Operation Orchard[2][3] (Hebrew: מבצע בוסתן, Mivtza bustan) was an Israeli airstrike on a suspected nuclear reactor[4] in the Deir ez-Zor region[5] of Syria, which occurred just after midnight (local time) on September 6, 2007. The Israeli and U.S. governments imposed virtually total news blackouts immediately after the raid that held for seven months.[6] The White House and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) subsequently confirmed that American intelligence had also indicated the site was a nuclear facility with a military purpose, though Syria denies this.[7][8] A 2009 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) investigation reported evidence of uranium and graphite and concluded that the site bore features resembling an undeclared nuclear reactor. IAEA was initially unable to confirm or deny the nature of the site because, according to IAEA, Syria failed to provide necessary cooperation with the IAEA investigation.[9][10] Syria has disputed these claims.[11] Nearly four years later, in April 2011, the IAEA officially confirmed that the site was a nuclear reactor.[4]
The Israeli attack followed top-level consultations with the Bush Administration. After realizing that the US was not willing to take its own military action, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert decided to adhere to the 1981 Begin Doctrine and unilaterally strike to prevent a Syrian nuclear weapons capability, despite serious concerns about Syrian retaliation. In stark contrast to the doctrine's prior usage against Iraq, the airstrike against Syria did not elicit international outcry. A main reason is that Israel maintained total and complete silence regarding the attack, and Syria covered up its activities at the site and did not cooperate fully with the IAEA. The international silence may have been a tacit recognition of the inevitability of preemptive attacks on "clandestine nuclear programs in their early stages." If true, the Begin Doctrine has undoubtedly played a role in shaping this global perception.[12]
According to later news reports, the raid was carried out by Israeli Air Force (IAF) 69 Squadron F-15Is,[13] F-16Is, and an ELINT aircraft; as many as eight aircraft participated and at least four of these crossed into Syrian airspace.[14] The fighters were equipped with AGM-65 Maverick missiles, 500 lb bombs, and external fuel tanks.[2][15] One report stated that a team of elite Israeli Shaldag special-forces commandos arrived at the site the day before so that they could highlight the target with laser designators,[13] while a later report identified Sayeret Matkal special-forces commandos as involved.[16]

Are Israeli settlers taking control of archaeological digs to manipulate history and consolidate claims to Palestinian land?
The Palestinian village of Silwan is located just below the ancient City of David, in the heart of Jerusalem. Archaeological digs here are under the control of the right wing group, ELAD. The constant threat of demolition hovers over people's houses. "It's part of ELAD's program to take over and occupy large parts of Silwan and make it Jewish", complains archaeologist Dr Rafi Greenberg. Locals have already defeated one plan to destroy close to 100 houses. But despite this victory, the nature of Silwan has changed beyond recognition. As Greenberg laments; "The place I knew as an Arab village with archaeology turned into a place with armed guards, a place with amplified symbols of Israeli presence."

Jozef Israëls
Jozef Israëls (27 January 1824 – 12 August 1911) was a Dutch painter, and "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".
Youth
He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to enter on an artistic career. However, the attempts he made under the guidance of two second-rate painters in his native town Buys and van Wicheren while still working under his father as a stock-broker's clerk, led to his being sent to Amsterdam, where he became a pupil of Jan Kruseman and attended the drawing class at the academy. He then spent two years in Paris, working in Picot's studio, and returned to Amsterdam. There he remained till 1870, when he moved to The Hague for good, where he became part of the Hague School of painters. He married Aleida Schaap and the couple had two children, a daughter Mathilde Anna Israëls and a son, Isaac Lazarus Israëls, born Amsterdam 3 Febr. 1865, who also became a fine art painter.

Six Days in June - Israel's 1967 Victory
This is a very well done 2007 documentary with some great archival footage. For it not only documents the war itself, but more importantly events leading up to is and the dilemmas faced by main characters on both sides of the conflict -- Israeli PM Levi Eshkol on one side and Egyptian leader Nasser on the other. Both of these leaders were exposed to some pretty intense pressures and the documentary does a terrific job retracing all the steps, exposing the sources of pressure, motivations behind them, etc. The other great thing about this documentary is that it also brings in a number of eye witnesses from both sides, who are all pretty frank about their assessment. It's interesting to hear the commentaries from the point of view of Nasser's secretary, high-ranking Soviet officials, Syrian...

Integration into Israeli society has been one of its main political goals and, under the leadership of founding prime minister David Ben-Gurion, Israel was going to be "the great Jewish melting pot", but it has come under severe strain almost since its inception in 1948.
"There's a gap in Israeli society," says Karen Amit, an Israeli of Moroccan origin.
"They support the arrival of immigrants in theory and love them but, in practice, the ordinary Israeli doesn't open his arms to welcome them. Research about Israeli attitude towards immigrants from Ethiopia has shown surprising results. On the one hand, they love them and have no problem with them. But when asked if they'd accept an Ethiopian neighbour or their children being at school with Ethiopians, their reply was negative."
Jewish people living in Israel today are largely divided into three main groups: Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrahi.
The Ashkenazim are from Germany, France and Eastern Europe. The term "Ashkenazi" comes from the Hebrew word for Germany. Most American Jews today are Ashkenazim, descended from those who arrived from Europe in the mid-1800s and early 1900s.
The Sephardim are from Spain, Portugal, North Africa and the Middle East. The term "Sephardi" comes from the Hebrew word for Spain. Many Jews fled Spain after the end of Muslim rule there in 1492.
Sephardic Jews are often subdivided into Sephardim and Mizrahim, from North Africa and the Middle East. The term "Mizrahi" comes from the Hebrew word for eastern.
There are claims of discrimination against the Mizrahi community in Israel.
"Discrimination and inequality were always a common practice. Western [Ashkenazi] Jews look down on others. They don't want to grant the Mizrahis power ... They want to fill their prisons with them rather than offering them education, culture and guidance," says Pinhas Aloshi, an Israeli of Tunisian origin.
David Hetsroni, an Israeli of Polish origin, came to Israel in 1930.
"My father arrived the following year. He didn't get any help from the state but paid for everything out of his own pocket. But as soon as the Mizrahi Jews arrived, they started complaining they were being oppressed. They used to say, 'You send us to live in Dimona, in the south while you live in Tel Aviv and in the centre. You offer us poor jobs while you get all the decent ones.' We didn't make these allegations. That's what I find hard to accept. natural justice, in my view, says [the allegations] are not fair," Hetsroni says.
Yehouda Shenhav, an Israeli of Iraqi origin, believes that the situation of the third-generation Mizrahi Jews compared with Ashkenazis, is worse today than it was 30 years ago.
"In the Seventies, there was one Mizrahi with a baccalaureate diploma to three Ashkenazis. Four percent of Mizrahi got the baccalaureate compared with 16 percent of Ashkenazim. Today, the gap has widened to about 12 percent against 50 percent.
I re-invented myself as Israeli rather than Arab. The more you distance yourself from Arabness, the more chance you have of integrating into Israeli society. It's sad," says Shenhav.
Rabbi Haim Amsalam says personal progress often depends on whether your family name is Mizrahi or not.
"I know many people who've reached high-ranking positions. They had no choice but to adopt Ashkenazi speech and physical appearance and gradually adopt Ashkenazi culture .... The melting pot that Ben-Gurion wanted to create has failed, because he wanted to melt everyone into one culture, the Western, Ashkenazi one. Why should I abandon my culture and heritage?" says Amsalam.
Israel's Great Divide explores the deep-rooted tension between Israel's Ashkenazi Jews and the Sephardi and Mizrahi communities.

This is a very well done 2007 documentary with some great archival footage. For it not only documents the war itself, but more importantly events leading up to is and the dilemmas faced by main characters on both sides of the conflict -- Israeli PM Levi Eshkol on one side and Egyptian leader Nasser on the other. Both of these leaders were exposed to some pretty intense pressures and the documentary does a terrific job retracing all the steps, exposing the sources of pressure, motivations behind them, etc.
The other great thing about this documentary is that it also brings in a number of eye witnesses from both sides, who are all pretty frank about their assessment. It's interesting to hear the commentaries from the point of view of Nasser's secretary, high-ranking Soviet officials, Syrian student in Cairo, Egyptian soldier, U.S.-born Palestinian journalist in Jerusalem, Jordanian commanders, UN commander, CIA officials, U.S. government officials, Israeli generals, soldiers and fighter pilots as well as Israeli civilians. This really puts it in even greater perspective.
The other interesting thing is how this documentary illuminates the misinformation and bias about the real state of affairs perpetuated by many Arab governments and media. It's interesting to hear Nasser boasts with almost sure victory in a conflict he instigated based on flawed intelligence from the Russians. He's touting the strengths of his armies which are ready for war, unaware that the war had already begun. Yet, when it's all over he refuses to take responsibility, blames the Brittish and the Americans for intervening on behalf of Israel even when the Israelis have clear evidence from an intercepted phone call between Nasser and King Hussein of Jordan plotting how to find a scape goat for their own folly.
But it also looks at the war and its outcome as the seed of the current conflict, the occupation of West Bank and Golan Heights, the land for peace principle and the general trauma that the war inflicted on the Arab world. I think this is a very valid point, which is no doubt controversial among Israelis as well as in the Arab world, but it effectively illustrates how we got to where we are now.
The authors got access to some pretty unique archival war footage, most of it from the Israelis. The one incident the documentary does not cover or even mention is the controversial sinking of the USS Liberty, US Navy electronic intelligence ship. In any case, this is definitely a must-see documentary for anyone interested in the Middle East and wars in general. I certainly recommend it

Operation Orchard[2][3] (Hebrew: מבצע בוסתן, Mivtza bustan) was an Israeli airstrike on a suspected nuclear reactor[4] in the Deir ez-Zor region[5] of Syria, which occurred just after midnight (local time) on September 6, 2007. The Israeli and U.S. governments imposed virtually total news blackouts immediately after the raid that held for seven months.[6] The White House and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) subsequently confirmed that American intelligence had also indicated the site was a nuclear facility with a military purpose, though Syria denies this.[7][8] A 2009 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) investigation reported evidence of uranium and graphite and concluded that the site bore features resembling an undeclared nuclear reactor. IAEA was initially unable to confirm or deny the nature of the site because, according to IAEA, Syria failed to provide necessary cooperation with the IAEA investigation.[9][10] Syria has disputed these claims.[11] Nearly four years later, in April 2011, the IAEA officially confirmed that the site was a nuclear reactor.[4]
The Israeli attack followed top-level consultations with the Bush Administration. After realizing that the US was not willing to take its own military action, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert decided to adhere to the 1981 Begin Doctrine and unilaterally strike to prevent a Syrian nuclear weapons capability, despite serious concerns about Syrian retaliation. In stark contrast to the doctrine's prior usage against Iraq, the airstrike against Syria did not elicit international outcry. A main reason is that Israel maintained total and complete silence regarding the attack, and Syria covered up its activities at the site and did not cooperate fully with the IAEA. The international silence may have been a tacit recognition of the inevitability of preemptive attacks on "clandestine nuclear programs in their early stages." If true, the Begin Doctrine has undoubtedly played a role in shaping this global perception.[12]
According to later news reports, the raid was carried out by Israeli Air Force (IAF) 69 Squadron F-15Is,[13] F-16Is, and an ELINT aircraft; as many as eight aircraft participated and at least four of these crossed into Syrian airspace.[14] The fighters were equipped with AGM-65 Maverick missiles, 500 lb bombs, and external fuel tanks.[2][15] One report stated that a team of elite Israeli Shaldag special-forces commandos arrived at the site the day before so that they could highlight the target with laser designators,[13] while a later report identified Sayeret Matkal special-forces commandos as involved.[16]

Are Israeli settlers taking control of archaeological digs to manipulate history and consolidate claims to Palestinian land?
The Palestinian village of Silwan is located just below the ancient City of David, in the heart of Jerusalem. Archaeological digs here are under the control of the right wing group, ELAD. The constant threat of demolition hovers over people's houses. "It's part of ELAD's program to take over and occupy large parts of Silwan and make it Jewish", complains archaeologist Dr Rafi Greenberg. Locals have already defeated one plan to destroy close to 100 houses. But despite this victory, the nature of Silwan has changed beyond recognition. As Greenberg laments; "The place I knew as an Arab village with archaeology turned into a place with armed guards, a place with amplified symbols of Israeli presence."

Refugees.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday said he would not allow Israel to be "submerged" by refugees after calls for the Jewish state to take in those fleeing Syria's war.
Speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu also announced the start of construction of a fence along Israel's border with Jordan, according to his office.
"We will not allow Israel to be submerged by a wave of illegal migrants and terrorist activists," Netanyahu said.
"Israel is not indifferent to the human tragedy of Syrian and African refugees... but Israel is a small country -- very small -- without demographic or geographic depth. That is why we must control our borders."

"I consider myself an Arab and a Muslim but I also consider myself part of this country." Mahmud Kahua, a new IDF recruit, explains his reasons for enlisting. "It's our state - it gives us things and we have to give back." Confident in himself and his role in society, Mahmud is not alone in this opinion. Although a view not shared by many Israeli Arabs, it is certainly gaining traction - ten times more Arabs are joining Israel's army than three years ago.
However, some see this recent surge as the result of increased desperation rather than national sentiment. Hanin Zoabi, an Arabic Member of Parliament, accuses the army of bribery: "Israel is after people who are poor, and have no work, to serve in the army." Indeed, she suggests this rise in interest stems from the government's negligence towards Arabs: "the government's policy of creating poverty obliges people to look for the only solution they can."
So is the rise of Arab participation being encouraged by positive feeling towards the state, or driven by a lack of options? Will it provide a path towards assimilation or simply further divide an ostracised community? This film investigates a pertinent development in the role of Arabs in the state of Israel.
