In 2011, the ILO's Member States adopted the Domestic Workers' Convention (N°189) to protect their rights, promote equality of opportunity and treatment, and improve working and living conditions. So far, 17 countries have ratified this convention. Let's keep the momentum!

Sally, originally from the Philippines, has been working in Hong Kong for the past twenty years. She is the sole breadwinner for her family. Sally spoke to SBB about her life before coming to Hong Kong, she worked at a factory and decided to move to Hong Kong owing to the difficulties she faced and the low wages in the Phillipines. In total there are over 310,000 domestic helpers in Hong Kong, none of whom has the "right to abode" even if living here for decades. This is in stark contrast to migrant workers from countless other countries who have the right to abode if they live in Hong Kong for 7 consecutive years.

Taking care of our homes, children, elders, and growing our food, is some of the most essential human work, but it is not valued by our society. It is work done by people of color, immigrants, women. And this devaluation is institutionalized. Domestic workers and farmworkers were left out of the National Labor Relations Act in the 1930's to appease Southern segregationists, who were afraid of African-American organizing. But today, once again, domestic workers are organizing. There are over 30 grassroots domestic worker organizations across the country, grappling with how to win respect and dignity for these workers. Together they have formed the National Domestic Worker Alliance.
About Andrea Cristina Mercado, lead organizer at Mujeres Unidas y Activas:
Mujeres Unidas y Activas is a grassroots Latina immigrant women's organization in the San Francisco Bay Area, for which Andrea coordinates MUA's campaign for Workers Rights Inside and Outside the Home. She is currently leading a statewide effort to include domestic workers in labor laws and is one of the cofounders of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. She has also lived and worked in Bahia, Brazil, with IPETERRAS, a sustainable agriculture project organizing against free-trade agreements and as Global Justice Organizer for the Miami Workers Center.
This talk is part of Session Two: Movement for TEDxFruitvale, which was held on October 14, 2011 at Mills College in Oakland, CA. The conference's theme was Harvesting Change, and it focused on farmworkers, labor and other social justice movements, and fair labor practices in business.

Domestic worker
A domestic helper is a person who works within the employer's household. Domestic helpers perform a variety of household services for an individual or a family, from providing care for children and elderly dependents to housekeeping, including cleaning and household maintenance. Other responsibilities may include cooking, laundry and ironing, shopping for food and undertaking other household errands. Such work has always needed to be done but before the Industrial Revolution and the advent of labour saving devices, it was physically much harder.
Some domestic helpers live within their employer's household. In some cases, the contribution and skill of servants whose work encompassed complex management tasks in large households have been highly valued. However, for the most part, domestic work, while necessary, is demanding and undervalued. Although legislation protecting domestic workers is in place in many countries, it is often not extensively enforced. In many jurisdictions, domestic work is poorly regulated and domestic workers are subject to serious abuses, including slavery.

In total there are over 310,000 domestic helpers in Hong Kong, none of whom has the "right to abode" even if living here for decades. This is in stark contrast to migrant workers from countless other countries who have the right to abode if they live in Hong Kong for 7 consecutive years.

Taking care of our homes, children, elders, and growing our food, is some of the most essential human work, but it is not valued by our society. It is work done by people of color, immigrants, women. And this devaluation is institutionalized. Domestic workers and farmworkers were left out of the National Labor Relations Act in the 1930's to appease Southern segregationists, who were afraid of African-American organizing. But today, once again, domestic workers are organizing. There are over 30 grassroots domestic worker organizations across the country, grappling with how to win respect and dignity for these workers. Together they have formed the National Domestic Worker Alliance.
About Andrea Cristina Mercado, lead organizer at Mujeres Unidas y Activas:
Mujeres Unidas y Activas is a grassroots Latina immigrant women's organization in the San Francisco Bay Area, for which Andrea coordinates MUA's campaign for Workers Rights Inside and Outside the Home. She is currently leading a statewide effort to include domestic workers in labor laws and is one of the cofounders of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. She has also lived and worked in Bahia, Brazil, with IPETERRAS, a sustainable agriculture project organizing against free-trade agreements and as Global Justice Organizer for the Miami Workers Center.
This talk is part of Session Two: Movement for TEDxFruitvale, which was held on October 14, 2011 at Mills College in Oakland, CA. The conference's theme was Harvesting Change, and it focused on farmworkers, labor and other social justice movements, and fair labor practices in business.
