UIPS in for overhaul
TNN | Jun 30, 2016, 04.54 AM ISTChandigarh: With a high-tech mammalian cell culture lab, sophisticated instrument lab and four research labs for students, the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), PU, is in for a major facelift in the 2016-17 academic session.
UIPS has been allocated the top floor of the department to set up high-tech labs. Besides, there will be one common room for boys and one for girls, store rooms, three lecture halls, faculty rooms and an exam room.
"Some equipment has been given to the institute by virtue of it being the only UGC-networking resource centre, where we train pharmacy trainers. So, we get some grants. We also get grants from Fund for Improvement of S&T; infrastructure (FIST), department of science and technology (DST). We will have these labs to house the equipment procured through grants," said Dr BS Bhoop, chairperson, UIPS, the pharmaceutical institute that got second rank in the NIRF rankings.
"We plan to have a boys' and girls' common room as students demanded that. We also plan to develop high-end laboratories," said Bhoop. The first floor of the UIPS building housed the departments of biochemistry and biophysics while the top floor was microbiology. According to the Pharmaceutical Council of India, UIPS required infrastructure upgrade.
The University will give Rs 15 lakh and the faculty of UIPS will use their own resources for the project. UIPS, which offers bachelors in pharmacy, masters in pharmacy and PhD in pharmacy, acquired the second rank in NIRF Rankings, 2016 with an overall score of 77.10. In order to maintain high standards and quality education, UIPS needed to upgrade infrastructure and the project will be completed in the next three months, Bhoop said.
