The Ottawa Senators (French: Sénateurs d'Ottawa) are a professional ice hockey team based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Senators play their home games at the 18,694 seat (20,041 capacity) Canadian Tire Centre which opened in 1996.
Founded and established by Ottawa real estate developer Bruce Firestone, the team is the second NHL franchise to use the Ottawa Senators name. The original Ottawa Senators, founded in 1883, had a famed history, winning 11 Stanley Cups and playing in the NHL from 1917 until 1934. On December 6, 1990, after a two-year public campaign by Firestone, the NHL awarded a new franchise, which began play in the 1992–93 season. The current team owner is Eugene Melnyk, and in 2014, the club was valued by Forbes magazine at $400 million.
The team has had success, qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs in 15 of the past 18 seasons, winning four division titles, the Presidents' Trophy in 2003 and appearing in the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals. The success has been reflected in attendance as the club has been regularly represented in the top half in attendance in the NHL.
Ottawa (i/ˈɒtəwə/ or /ˈɒtəwɑː/; French pronunciation: [ɔtawa]) is the capital city of Canada. It stands on the south bank of the Ottawa River in the eastern portion of Southern Ontario. Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec; the two form the core of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area (CMA) and the National Capital Region (NCR). The 2011 census reported a population of 883,391 within the city, making it the fourth-largest city in Canada, and 1,236,324 within the CMA, making it the fourth-largest CMA in Canada. The City of Ottawa has since estimated it had a population of 951,727 in 2014.
Founded in 1826 as Bytown, and incorporated as "Ottawa" in 1855, the city has evolved into a political and technological centre of Canada. Its original boundaries were expanded through numerous minor annexations and were ultimately replaced by a new city incorporation and major amalgamation in 2001 which significantly increased its land area. The city name "Ottawa" was chosen in reference to the Ottawa River nearby, which is a word derived from the Algonquin word Odawa, meaning "to trade".

A video documentary by filmmaker Giovanni Falcone on the birth of the modern era Ottawa Senators. This is the extended version of Mr Falcone's first documentary film about the NHL's Senators, which can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVD2ukfvdmI&index;=1&list;=PLd3QdcBlEm9_X8zu29QWXEZ1io-xwZD0- This documentary was released to help celebrate the 25th anniversary (Sunday December 6th 2015) of the grant of conditional NHL expansion franchises to the cities of Ottawa and Tampa on Thursday December 6th 1990. The Ottawa Senators knocked off the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the 2016-17 playoffs in 7 games. Now in the conference semi-finals, will they be able to knock off the top team in the east and advance to the eastern conference final for the first time since 2007? Or will the very defensive Montreal Canadiens come out on top of this heated rivalry series.

Thank you Sportsnet for ruining the game last night with your incessant yapping about Austin Mathews. I get that you need the Leafs to be good to make that 5 billion worthwhile but that was over the top. Mathews was thankfully much calmer than your annalists.

The 2014-2015 Ottawa Senators were considered dead and gone on February 10th of this year (20 Wins-22 Losses-9 Overtime Losses [49 points]). Finding themselves 14 points back of a playoff spot, the Sens did the unthinkable and secured a playoff berth on the final game of the season finishing with 99 points. That is their highest point total since the 2006-2007 season, in which they ultimately lost in the Stanley Cup Finals in 5 games to the Ducks. The Senators finished the season on a 23-4-4 [50 points] run, which is absolutely incredible. Interestingly, the Sens did have a similar mid- season comeback in the 2006-2007 season [105 pts] On February 16th 2015, a virtually unheard-of goaltender from Bowling Green University (Andrew "the Hamburglar" Hammond) was thrust into his first NHL game...
