UNBOXING ILLINOIS: What It's Like Living in ILLINOIS
Is Illinois more than corn, cornhole and Cubs and Cardinals fans? If you've ever been in Illinois you likely only went to one of the largest cities in the U.S; Chicago. If for whatever reason you found yourself further South you'd probably just get lost in a bunch of cornfields until you turned around and went back to Chicago.
Ah, Illinois. What a beautiful state. Home to Abraham Lincoln (our finest president), the state can really be divided up into four parts. You’ve got 'snobby' Chicago metro area, a small area that can be defined as Chicago suburbs, a section of Illinois that might as well be Wisconsin, and the rest of the state. The rest of Illinois is very large, and very much looks the same.
Now, since Chicago has a large part of the state’s population (17 percent to be exact), w...

ILLINOIS isn't what you THINK it is.
Is Illinois ALL crummy? Maybe not.
So the last time we talked about Illinois, we learned a lot of stuff. Like we learned that some of the best places to live in Illinois are going to be in many Chicago suburbs. These areas include places on the north and west side of Chicago - Clarendon Hills, Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, Naperville and Evanston. This is where it’s very safe, and the schools are great, but it’s really expensive. We also learned that the worst places you can live in Illinois are going to be in south Chicago, west Chicago, East St. Louis, Rockford, Peoria and Decatur.
We figured out that the top part of the state is basically Wisconsin, the southern part of the state is basically Kentucky and the middle majority of the state is all smaller cities and corn fields which are r...

Illinois dropping mask mandate this month, but not in schools
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced the state will lift its indoor mask mandate for most locations beginning Monday, Feb. 28. However, the change does not include schools.
The governor made the announcement Wednesday after reports started circulating about the plan Tuesday evening.
Starting Feb. 28, establishments no longer have to require masks indoors. However, Gov. Pritzker emphasized businesses and communities can continue to have their own mandates and mitigations, and the public should respect those requests.
"Masks continue to be a very effective way to keep your establishment from experiencing an outbreak of the disease," Pritzker said during a live briefing Wednesday afternoon.

Home to
Abraham Lincoln (our finest president), the state can really be divided up into four parts. You’ve got 'snobby' Chicago metro area, a small area that can be defined as Chicago suburbs, a section of Illinois that might as well be Wisconsin, and the rest of the state. The rest of Illinois is very large, and very much looks the same.
Now, since Chicago has a large part of the state’s population (17 percent to be exact), we'll be starting there. Don't worry though, we'll be covering all the action that takes place in the rest of Illinois, too. Try not to fall asleep when we get to that part.
Let's be real, Chicago is by far the most common reason for going to Illinois, bringing in 58 million visitors in 2018. A new record! With that many people coming and going, you'll have a hard time finding any parking, as most Chicagoans will tell you. Especially when it snows.
The heart of Chicago, The Loop, is synonymous with the downtown area of Chicago. Here you'll find everything from concerts and festivals to famous art pieces like Cloud Gate, which everyone just lovingly calls 'The Bean'
You'll find most of the safest spots in Chicago from the Loop and up north.
Next we have the Near North Side, probably the best place to live in the city. (If you can afford it) It's located just North of the beautiful Chicago River, the only river in the world that flows backwards.
Here, people are wealthy, and quite frankly, could be considered yuppies.
This is home to Chicago’s famous Magnificent Mile and The Original Gino’s East of Chicago. The best pizza in Chicago, depending on who you ask.
Of course Chicago is known for it's awesome food. Whether it's the no ketchup ever Chicago style hotdogs or the famous dish dish pizzas that commonly have wait times of over an hour, you'll find it in here.
Outside of Chicago you have the Chicago suburbs. This is where the wealthy, rich, smart, snobby people live. Places like Buffalo Grove, Naperville and Clarendon Hills always rank in terms of the best places to live in the entire country. The Chicago suburbs have much more greenways, parks and lots of places to swim and fish. There’s a good sense of community here.
People from Chicago can come across as snobby, possibly just because they love their city so much. But people from the rest of Illinois can't seem to agree with them on anything. This includes everything from politics and ideals to fashion and pizza toppings.
What about the weather? Well, it’s a gray, cold sort of place for most of the year. Winters in Illinois seem to start in October, and you can still expect a freak snowstorm in May. You basically get two good months a year - June and October. That’s really it. Summer is measured when the local ice cream shop opens up.
But all that miserable winter weather doesn’t stop mushroom season from happening every Spring. If you’ve never hunted for morel mushrooms, it’s actually pretty fun. Illinois folks NEVER tell others about their secret mushroom hunting spots.

We figured out that the top part of the state is basically Wisconsin, the southern part of the state is basically Kentucky and the middle majority of the state is all smaller cities and corn fields which are really pretty in the summer, but drab and dreary for 6 months a year.
We also talked about how high taxes are in Illinois and talked about the population loss here - lots of people are fleeing Illinois for surrounding states like Wisconsin and Indiana or as far away as Colorado, Texas and Florida. Illinois is only one of a few states that lost people over the last decade. We’ll talk more about that later.
But there’s a lot more to Illinois than that. We didn’t talk about some Illinois history, interesting facts and the issues that people in Illinois face today.
So that’s what we’re gonna do in this video. Kind of pick up where we left off in a more lighthearted way. We’re going to look at all of that stuff and even meet some people who LIVE in Illinois who are gonna tell us what its like in their state and where you could move if you relocate here.
Business owner Josua Lee feels the choice to put on a mask lies with the individual or the business.
"Don't force people to do things, that why we live in this county and the freedom of choice," Lee said.
Austin Rolens believes an individual's choice should be respected by all, even if you don't agree.
"People can't just come (into a business) and say I'm not wearing a mask because it's not enforced. No, businesses still have that right"
Pritzker said schools still need a little more time, so the mask mandate will continue for now for preschool through 12th grade. The mandate also stays in place for daycare settings. State officials cited lower vaccination rates among children and younger kids who aren't eligible for vaccines yet.
“Children’s social-emotional and academic growth is best supported in the in-person educational setting, so extra precaution should be taken to prevent disruption and avoid adaptive pauses and remote learning,” said Dr. Zach Rubin, a pediatric immunologist based in DuPage County. “Maintaining masking and mitigation practices in the school environment buys us more time for infection rates to drop."
Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville student Stephen Wood said he doesn't mind putting on a mask but sees them being less effective when cases aren't surging. Many of his classes are packed with students.
"When you are in a classroom shoulder to shoulder, is it really that helpful?
Masks continue to be highly recommended for everyone, especially in crowded situations and where the vaccination status of those around you is unknown.
"Masks offer a layer of protection and for people who have an underlying health condition or who are around those who do, you may choose to continue wearing a mask," said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. "Similarly, if you find yourself in a crowded, indoor setting, a mask can still help protect you. We will continue to recommend masks.”
The state's move does not affect federal mask mandates, which still require face coverings in federal buildings, on public transportation and in high-risk settings, like health care facilities. As of Wednesday, the federal mandate continues through March 18.
Officials credited COVID-19 hospitalization rates that are "declining faster than any other point in the pandemic," the state wrote in a news release. The governor said lifting the mandate will only happen if that trend continues, which they expect to happen.
