Rent (MUD)

Rent, in MUDs (primarily DikuMUDs), is a mechanism for both enabling and limiting persistence of a player character's possessions. In the "traditional" rent paradigm, in order to keep belongings between game sessions, the player must travel to an inn and use the rent command there, and is assessed a price, in game money, for each inventory item; items that cannot be paid for are not persisted. If the player simply uses the quit command rather than rent, inventory items are not kept, and fall to the ground. Many evolutions of this approach exist: the rent command is often made to be performable anywhere rather than only at an inn, sometimes costs are removed or made negligible, and so on. At times, in MUDs where inventory is made to simply persist automatically when the player quits the game, the conceptualization of inventory persistence as "rent" is sufficiently ingrained that this is referred to as "autorent".

Rent is often considered an annoyance to players, which is a factor that drives the many variations seen on the concept. On the other hand, the need to pay to retain one's items can provide an impetus to engagement with the game, though this may be seen as unduly coercive.

"Rent" is a 1987 single by the Pet Shop Boys. It was released in the UK by Parlophone on 12 October 1987.

Song information

The lyrics are commonly thought to deal with a financially one-sided relationship, i.e. that of a kept man, the title implying more specifically the lot of a rent boy. Neil Tennant, however, stated in the Actually: Further Listening liner notes:

It peaked at number 8 in the British charts. Producer Stephen Hague remixed the song for single release.

Video

The video for the song was directed by Derek Jarman. It features two intercut storylines. One, filmed in black and white, shows Chris Lowe arriving at King's Cross station by train and walking past various low-life characters. The other, filmed in colour, features Margi Clarke as the partner of a wealthy man (played by Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath), who is hosting a dinner party. The lyrics are sung by Tennant, who plays her chauffeur. The woman becomes annoyed when the man pays her no attention. She then gets Tennant to drive her to King's Cross. There, she meets Chris Lowe on the platform and they embrace.

Rent (film)

Rent is a 2005 American musical drama film directed by Chris Columbus. It is an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, in turn based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème. The film depicts the lives of several Bohemians and their struggles with sexuality, drugs, paying their rent, and life under the shadow of AIDS. It takes place in the East Village of New York City from 1989 to 1990. The film features six of the original Broadway cast members reprising their roles.

Plot

On Christmas Eve, 1989, aspiring filmmaker Mark Cohen, and his roommate, Roger Davis, learn that the rent previously waived by their former friend and landlord, Benjamin “Benny” Coffin III, is due (Rent). At the same time, their former roommate Tom Collins shows up and gets mugged in an alleyway. Meanwhile, Mark and Roger meet with Benny, who tells them he plans to evict the homeless from the nearby lot and build a cyber studio in its place (You'll See Boys). He offers them free rent if they can get Maureen, Mark's ex-girlfriend, to cancel her protest against his plans, but they refuse.

Park West, Dublin

Park West (Irish: Páirc an Iarthair) is a large business campus within greater Ballyfermot, notably Cherry Orchard, Dublin, Ireland, with some residential development.

There are over 300 companies with 10,000 employees.

Location and content

Located just inside the M50 orbital motorway in west Dublin, the development comprises several million square metres of office and retail space, along with an Aspect hotel, a private hospital, and three apartment complexes.

Park West is in the administration of Dublin City Council, and Dublin postal districts Dublin 10 and Dublin 12, chiefly the latter.

Art

Park West is home to Europe's tallest wind and water mobile sculpture, Wave by Angela Conner. It is a 39.3 metre (129 feet) tall sculpture made of polystyrene covered with layers of carbon resin. It is fixed into a 7.6 metre (25 foot) pit filed with 9.5 tonnes of lead.

Transport

The campus is accessible by road (primarily the (New) Nangor Road, as well as Killeen Road and Cloverhill), bus (routes 79A and 151) and rail at the Park West and Cherry Orchard railway station. At a moderate distance to the south is the Kylemore stop on the Luas red line.

Wave (Antonio Carlos Jobim album)

Wave is the third album by Antônio Carlos Jobim, released in 1967 on A&M Records. It is known as Jobim's most successful album to date (# 5 US JAZZ ALBUMS 1967,# 114 US ALBUMS 1968), and it was listed by Rolling Stone Brazil as one of the 100 best Brazilian albums in history.

Caster board

A caster board or vigorboard is a two-wheeled, human-powered land vehicle. It is somewhat like a snakeboard. Other names are waveboard and RipStik, both associated with commercial interests.

A caster board has two narrow platforms known as "decks" that are joined by a "torsion bar", which consists of a metal beam, usually coated by rubber, that houses a strong spring. One polyurethane wheel is mounted to each deck with a caster so that that each wheel can steer independently, and each caster has a steering axis that is tilted about 30° back from the vertical.

Movement

Because of the construction of a caster board, riding one (or "caster boarding") is more akin to snowboarding or surfboarding than skateboarding. The stance is perpendicular to the board, and the feet do not need to leave the board to propel it. While riding, one can also carve back and forth, making heel-and-toe side turns (see steering). Initially, one places the front foot (depending on preference) on the front of the board, which is generally unidirectional. Once on the board, and riding, the independent motion capabilities of the front and back of the board allow it to twist along the lengthwise axis. This lets the rider turn or even propel the board forward without removing his or her feet from the board.
