The Carpenters were an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter. Producing a distinctively soft musical style, they became among the best-selling music artists of all time. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded 11 albums, 31 singles, five television specials, and a short-lived television series. Their career ended in 1983 by Karen's death from heart failure brought on by complications of anorexia. Extensive news coverage surrounding the circumstances of her death increased public awareness of eating disorders.
The duo's brand of melodic pop produced a record-breaking run of hit recordings on the American Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, and they became leading sellers in the soft rock, easy listening and adult contemporary genres. The Carpenters had three No. 1 singles and five No. 2 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and fifteen No. 1 hits on the Adult Contemporary chart. In addition, they had twelve top 10 singles. To date, the Carpenters' album and single sales total more than 100 million units.
"Please Mr. Postman" is a song written by Georgia Dobbins, William Garrett, Freddie Gorman, Brian Holland, and Robert Bateman. It is the debut single by the Marvelettes for the Tamla (Motown) label, notable as the first Motown song to reach the number-one position on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart. The single achieved this position in late 1961; it hit number one on the R&B chart as well. "Please Mr. Postman" became a number-one hit again in early 1975 when the Carpenters' cover of the song reached the top position of the Billboard Hot 100. "Please Mr. Postman" has been covered several times, including a 1963 version by the English rock group the Beatles.
In April 1961, the Marvelettes (then known as "The Marvels") arranged an audition for Berry Gordy's Tamla label. Marvels member Georgia Dobbins needed an original song for their audition, and got a blues song from her friend William Garrett, which she then reworked for the group. Dobbins left the group after the audition and was replaced, Gordy renamed the group and hired "Brianbert"—Brian Holland and Robert Bateman's songwriting partnership—to rework the song yet again. Freddie Gorman, another songwriting partner of Holland (before Holland became part of the Holland–Dozier–Holland team) was also involved in the final reworking.
The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. With members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they became widely regarded as the foremost and most influential act of the rock era. Rooted in skiffle, beat, and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later experimented with several genres, ranging from pop ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock, often incorporating classical elements in innovative ways. In the early 1960s, their enormous popularity first emerged as "Beatlemania", but as the group's music grew in sophistication, led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, they came to be perceived as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the counterculture of the 1960s.
The Beatles built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960, with Stuart Sutcliffe initially serving as bass player. The core of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison went through a succession of drummers, most notably Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act and producer George Martin enhanced their musical potential. They gained popularity in the United Kingdom after their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. They acquired the nickname "the Fab Four" as Beatlemania grew in Britain over the following year, and by early 1964 they had become international stars, leading the "British Invasion" of the United States pop market. From 1965 onwards, the Beatles produced what many consider their finest material, including the innovative and widely influential albums Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966), Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), The Beatles (commonly known as the White Album, 1968) and Abbey Road (1969).
The Marvelettes were an American all-girl group who achieved popularity in the early to mid-1960s. They consisted of schoolmates Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson (now Schaffner), Georgeanna Tillman (later Gordon), Juanita Cowart (now Cowart Motley), and Georgia Dobbins, who was replaced by Wanda Young (now Rogers) prior to the group signing their first deal. They were the first major successful act of Motown Records after the Miracles and its first significantly successful girl group after the release of the 1961 number-one single, "Please Mr. Postman", one of the first number-one singles recorded by an all-female vocal group and the first by a Motown recording act.
Founded in 1960 while the group's founding members performed together at their glee club at Inkster High School in Inkster, Michigan, they eventually were signed to Motown's Tamla label in 1961. Some of the group's early hits were written by band members and some of Motown's rising singer-songwriters such as Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye, who played drums on a majority of their early recordings. Despite their early successes, the group was eclipsed in popularity by groups like the Supremes, with whom they shared an intense rivalry.
A mail carrier, mailman, mailwoman, postal carrier, postman, postwoman, or letter carrier (in American English), sometimes colloquially known as a postie (in Australia,New Zealand,Scotland, and other parts of the United Kingdom), is an employee of a post office or postal service, who delivers mail and parcel post to residences and businesses. The term "mail carrier" came to be used as a gender-neutral substitute for "mailman" soon after women began performing the job. In the Royal Mail, the official name changed from "letter carrier" to "postman" in 1883, and "postwoman" has also been used for many years.
In the United States, the official label for a mail carrier is "letter carrier". There are three types of letter carriers: city letter carriers, who are represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers; Rural Letter Carrier, who are represented by the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association; and Highway Contract Route carriers, who are independent contractors. While union membership is voluntary, city carriers are organized near 70% nationally.

The lovely Karen Carpenter sings "Close To You" live in 1974 from Budokan, Japan. The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and was their first huge song hit that the Caprpenters covered way back in the fall of 1970. Karen and Richard were definitely the 'sensation' of the seventies and why not? Karen's beautiful vocals were and still are a joy to listen to.
Versione live di questo celeberrimo brano, bellissima la voce di Karen, meglio che nella versione registrata in studio.

The Carpenters Greatest Hits - The Best Of The Carpenters
Karen and Richard Carpenter were a brother and sister team who had many hits in the 1970's and early 80's. The clear toned Karen and the laid back piano player Richard captured the hearts of audiences world-wide. It was no surprise that they had many offers to tour Europe and Australasia as the sheer brilliance of their easy listening style made them a magnet for television shows. Here they are in concert in 1971 giving us a flavour of the many hits to come.

Miami International Airport - March 30, 1972.
In June 1981, the Carpenters released "Made In America" which would turn out to be the last album released during Karen's lifetime. In August of that year, they made an appearance on "Good Morning, America" to publicize the release of the album. (Note: this television appearance took place 8 months before Karen recorded her last song, "Now.") Karen had been married just a little over a year and already her marriage was beginning to show signs of strain. It is evident in this video how ill Karen was at that time in her life. There had been no album released since "Passage" (1977) and the Carpenters were attempting a comeback. A single from the new album "Touch Me When We're Dancing," was a success, reaching #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and #1 on the Adult Contemporary Cha...
August 10, 1981 A skeletal and obviously anorexic Karen Carpenter speaks with Joan Lunden on ABC's Good Morning America in this very hard-to-watch interview. Karen actually survived nearly two more years (until February 4, 1983 - one month shy of her 33rd birthday.) She was roughly 31 1/2 years old at the time of this show's airing. Karen and Richard appear on "The Tonight Show," guest-hosted by Steve Martin, January 27, 1977. Karen was 26 years old, Richard was 30. John Denver also appears as a guest. Karen sings the Cole Porter tune, "From This Moment On." ____________________________ I've only seen a few of Karen and Richard's appearances on The Tonight Show, but this one is among my favorite, because there's a feeling of camaraderie among everyone. I like Karen telling about swallowing a moth - she tries to say that she choked or coughed and ends up saying, "I choffed...!" Karen and Richard perform "From This Moment On," and Tommy Smothers offers to sell them his "Dickie" jokes. Listen for the Captain and Tennille reference. At the time, Captain and Tennille were usurping the crown from the Carpenters as A&M's...

Wait!
Oh yes, wait just a minute Mr. Postman
Wait!
Wait Mr. Postman
Mr. Postman, look and see
(Oh yeah)
If there's a letter in your bag for me
(Please, please Mr. Postman)
I've been waiting a long long time
(Oh yeah)
Since I heard from that gal of mine
There must be some word someday
From my girlfriend so far away
Please Mr. Postman look and see
If there's a letter, a letter for me
I've been standing here waiting Mr. Postman
So-o-o patiently
For just a card or just a letter
Saying she's returning home to me
Please Mr. Postman
Mr. Postman, look and see
(Oh yeah)
If there's a letter in your bag for me
(Please, please Mr. Postman)
I've been waiting a long long time
(Oh yeah)
Since I heard from that gal of mine
So many days you passed me by
Trail of tears standing in my eye
You didn't stop to make me feel better
By leaving me a card or a letter
Mr. Postman
Mr. Postman, look and see
Is there a letter in your bag for me?
(Oh yeah for me)
I've been waiting such a long time
Since I heard from that girlfriend of mine
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
(Mr. Postman)
Wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
(Mr. Postman)
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
(Mr. Postman)
Check it and see, one more time for me
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
(Mr. Postman)
Wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
(Mr. Postman)
Mr. Postman, oh yeah
(Wait a minute, wait a minute Mr. Postman)
Deliver the letter, the sooner the better
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
(Mr. Postman)
Wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
(Mr. Postman)
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
(Mr. Postman)
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
