Hi, I'm David Henson, managing partner with HensonFuerst Attorneys. We help people through the long and exhausting process of attaining Social Security Disability benefits everyday. Of the many things we've learned along the way, one lesson is clear: The SSA looks for reasons to reject your claim. Here are the top 5 things you can do to help SS shut you out.
1. Don't get medical care for your conditions.
2. Do drugs or alcohol.
3.Break the law, or end up in jail.
4.Don't keep your lawyer up-to-date on your situation.
5. Miss deadlines or appointments.
If you work hard all your life, and end up so injured or sick that you can no longer work, you may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits. But just because you are eligible, that doesn't mean you are entitled. There is a world of reasons why your case may be not be approved...don't hand the courts a reason to deny your claim.

Adam Pearson is on a mission to explore disability hate crime - to find out why it goes under-reported, under-recorded and under people's radar. In this documentary, Adam challenges people into questioning their attitudes towards disability and disfigurement, to uncover the roots of the issue.
Adam has neurofibromatosis type 1, a condition that causes benign tumours to grow on nerve endings - in his case, on his face. He is disfigured and disabled and has experienced disability hate crime first-hand, like a number of his friends, some of whom he meets with in the film. Their stories may differ, but their disability as the motivating factor is constant.
Just days into his investigation, Adam becomes the target of some grossly offensive online hate speech. While this isn't unusual for him, for the first time Adam decides to take action, reporting it to the police - with some unexpected outcomes.
Undeterred, he looks to understand the laws specific to disability hate crime, and finds that a mixture of ignorance and inequalities mean that these crimes often don't make it to our courts, or are sentenced less severely than other hate crimes when they do.
Adam looks to uncover what attitudes and influences may be causing people to commit disability hate crime in the first place, questioning whether the portrayal of disfigurement and disability in the media, for example, could be leading us to associate them with being 'the bad guys'.
With help from Miles Hewstone, professor of social psychology at the University of Oxford, Adam conducts an experiment measuring peoples' innate prejudice towards disfigurement that gives some shocking results, and leads him to question if he alone can hope to affect a change - and if so, how?

How do you apply for Social Security disability benefits? Actually, it is quite easy. There is no cost to apply and you cannot get in trouble for applying, even if it later turns out that you do go back to work or if your case is denied.
Social Security's online application process functions as your fastest and most recommended method to apply. Just go to www.ssa.gov/applyfordisability and follow the on-screen prompts. We recommend that you print out each page of your application as you go - you will want to keep a copy of your application and it is difficult to log in later to retrieve a copy.
You can also apply by phone - call 800-772-1213, but prepare yourself to navigate a lengthy voice mail tree and the live operator you eventually reach may or may not be helpful.
The least desirable method would be applying in person at your local Social Security office. Long lines? Yes. Lengthy delays? You'll get that too. Overworked employees in a bad mood? Need I say more?
Here are a couple of tips for applying:
1. You'll be asked about the date you stopped working. What this means is "what is the date you stopped working a full time, regular job?" This may be the date you actually last set foot in an employer's location or it could be months earlier. Perhaps you tried to work a couple of times but were unsuccessful. Use the earliest date possible here.
2. You'll be asked "when did you become disabled?" Here, too, the earliest possible date, the better. Choose the earliest possible date when your medical condition reached the point where you lost the capacity to work full time in any job. We can change this later but try to come up with a logical date.
3. You'll be asked "why do you consider yourself disabled?" Here, use a medical diagnosis as opposed to just symptoms.
4. If you cannot work anymore, and you're in pain, and you're struggling financially, it stands to reason you would be depressed. I recommend that you include depression as one of the reasons you cannot work. Including depression will trigger a free psychological consultative evaluation that my help your claim down the road.
Finally, you should expect some sort of written follow-up within 2 to 3 weeks. If you do not get a follow-up letter, start calling Social Security - you can use the 800 number. SSA has been known to lose files.
The disability adjudication process can take years, so start the process now if you think you qualify.

In this film, we ask prominent disabled people from the disability community what is the social model of disability, and why is it important to them?
The social model of disability says that disability is caused by the way society is organised, rather than by a person’s impairment or difference. It looks at ways of removing barriers that restrict life choices for disabled people. When barriers are removed, disabled people can be independent and equal in society, with choice and control over their own lives.
Disabled people developed the social model of disability because the traditional medical model did not explain their personal experience of disability or help to develop more inclusive ways of living.
An impairment is defined as long-term limitation of a person’s physical, mental or sensory function.

Disability
Disability is the consequence of an impairment that may be physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, emotional, developmental, or some combination of these. A disability may be present from birth, or occur during a person's lifetime.
Individuals may also qualify as disabled if they have had an impairment in the past or are seen as disabled based on a personal or group standard or norm. Such impairments may include physical, sensory, and cognitive or developmental disabilities. Mental disorders (also known as psychiatric or psychosocial disability) and various types of chronic disease may also qualify as disabilities.
Some advocates object to describing certain conditions (notably deafness and autism) as "disabilities", arguing that it is more appropriate to consider them developmental differences that have been unfairly stigmatized by society. Others argue that disability is a result of exclusion from mainstream society and not because of impairment.
Types of disability
The term "disability" broadly describes an impairment in a person's ability to function, caused by changes in various subsystems of the body, or to mental health. The degree of disability may range from mild to moderate, severe, or profound. A person may also have multiple disabilities. Disability can be measured objectively (observed) or subjectively (self-report).

Ben Myers
Ben Myers or Benjamin Myers (born 1976, Durham) is an English writer and journalist.
His novel Beastings (2014) was published in 2014. Set in remote Cumbria in an unnamed era, it won the Portico Prize For Literature and the Northern Writers' Award. It was also longlisted for the Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize.
Pig Iron (2012) was set in the traveller/gypsy community of the north-east of England and was the first to be published under his full name Benjamin Myers. It won the inaugural Gordon Burn Prize and was longlisted for 3:AM Magazine.com's 'Novels of the Year' and runner-up in The Guardian's 'Not The Booker Prize', in the same year.
In 2014 Myers won the Society of Author's Tom-Gallon Prize, for his short story, 'The Folk Song Singer'. His poem 'The Path To Pendle Hill' was selected by New Statesman as one of its Poems Of The Year 2015
Myers' second novel, Richard: A Novel (2010) was a fictionalized account of the life of musician Richey Edwards. It was published by Picador in October 2010, and polarised critical opinion.

In this documentary, Adam challenges people into questioning their attitudes towards disability and disfigurement, to uncover the roots of the issue. How do you apply for Social Security disability benefits? Actually, it is quite easy. There is no cost to apply and you cannot get in trouble for applying, even if it later turns out that you do go back to work or if your case is denied. Social Security's online application process functions as your fastest and most recommended method to apply. Just go to www.ssa.gov/applyfordisability and follow the on-screen prompts. We recommend that you print out each page of your application as you go - you will want to keep a copy of your application and it is difficult to log in later to retrieve a copy. Just days into his investigation, Adam becomes the target of some grossly offensive online hate speech. While this isn't unusual for him, for the first time Adam decides to take action, reporting it to the police - with some unexpected outcomes.
Undeterred, he looks to understand the laws specific to disability hate crime, and finds that a mixture of ignorance and inequalities mean that these crimes often don't make it to our courts, or are sentenced less severely than other hate crimes when they do.
Adam looks to uncover what attitudes and influences may be causing people to commit disability hate crime in the first place, questioning whether the portrayal of disfigurement and disability in the media, for example, could be leading us to associate them with being 'the bad guys'.
With help from Miles Hewstone, professor of social psychology at the University of Oxford, Adam conducts an experiment measuring peoples' innate prejudice towards disfigurement that gives some shocking results, and leads him to question if he alone can hope to affect a change - and if so, how?

The least desirable method would be applying in person at your local Social Security office. Long lines? Yes. Lengthy delays? You'll get that too. Overworked employees in a bad mood? Need I say more?
Here are a couple of tips for applying:
1. You'll be asked about the date you stopped working. What this means is "what is the date you stopped working a full time, regular job?" This may be the date you actually last set foot in an employer's location or it could be months earlier. Perhaps you tried to work a couple of times but were unsuccessful. Use the earliest date possible here.
2. You'll be asked "when did you become disabled?" Here, too, the earliest possible date, the better. Choose the earliest possible date when your medical condition reached the point where you lost the capacity to work full time in any job. We can change this later but try to come up with a logical date.
3. You'll be asked "why do you consider yourself disabled?" Here, use a medical diagnosis as opposed to just symptoms.
4. If you cannot work anymore, and you're in pain, and you're struggling financially, it stands to reason you would be depressed. I recommend that you include depression as one of the reasons you cannot work. Including depression will trigger a free psychological consultative evaluation that my help your claim down the road.
Finally, you should expect some sort of written follow-up within 2 to 3 weeks. If you do not get a follow-up letter, start calling Social Security - you can use the 800 number. SSA has been known to lose files.
The disability adjudication process can take years, so start the process now if you think you qualify.

My roommate, Bruce and I only make so much with our benefits. He has crunched the numbers - about $8.00/hr for him, and about $5.84/hr for me. For him, that is under the minimum wage of Calfornia (state), and for me, that is under the federal (US) minimum wage! SHAME. No wonder so many of us are homeless or insecure. -

Around 113,000 people in the Occupied West Bank and Gaza live with disabilities. Over 33 percent of schoolgoers with disabilities drop out of school.
In this film, we meet seven Palestinians aged between seven and 28 with different disabilities. Most were born with them; one was injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza.
But they all have a positive attitude and a strong desire to overcome their physical weaknesses and realise their dreams.
We meet Haneen Abu Ayash, 25, who lives in Hebron. Haneen trained as a secretary but couldn't find a job because of a speech impediment she's had since birth. Her mother suffered a lack of oxygen while giving birth to Haneen, which left her daughter with a balance defect. "Is it wrong to feel that I'm like everyone else?" she asks. "It's not wrong to exercise my right or to know that I'm like the rest of the people."
Mohamed Sadah, a young man who works for his uncle in a second-hand market, was born with a congenital malformation affecting his lower body. He bemoans the lack of electronic equipment and other facilities for the disabled in the Occupied West Bank. Yet, despite not having the use of his legs, he strives to be independent, using his hands to climb stairs.
Idriss Awaad, seven, is determined to learn how to walk and practises every single day along a long wall near his uncle's house. He suffers from the same condition as Haneen.
"When I start walking, I'll give [my brother] Issa the stand and this chair to sell," he says.
Just before he graduated, Zyad Deeb, 28, an artist and photographer, lost 11 members of his family in Israeli rocket attacks during the Gaza War of 2008-2009. He also lost both his legs. His father and brother are buried in the same grave along with his legs.
But these tragedies haven't stopped him from capturing the "beauty of things" in his beloved Gaza.
Also from Gaza is Anas Abu Haloub, a young schoolboy who has the same condition as Mohamed and requires a wheelchair. He goes to school and although he can't play sport with other children, he doesn't want people to feel sorry for him and help him.
Muna Zayed, a 14-year-old girl with a big smile, is close to her elder brother, Thaer, but says she has no friends because children her age "don't accept playing with me". Muna, who lives in Gaza, has had virtually to drop out of school because it became too difficult for her to use her manual wheelchair and her family couldn't take her to school every day. Nevertheless, she aspires to become a primary school teacher.
Abed Alrahman Abu Rawah, 17, who lives in Gaza, was born with a congenital malformation leaving him with one arm and one leg. Despite this, he taught himself how to ride a bike and is determined to get work helping other disabled people.
In the face of conflict, occupation, tragedy and disability - in places ill-equipped to handle special needs - we see how these seven people have learned to navigate complex challenges with both optimism and strength. In Defying My Disability we see how they're determined to rise above their disabilities, make the most out of life and draw strength from everyday things around them - their families, the sea and themselves.

National Star prepares all its students for a more independent life after college. The final episode follows three of the most independent students into the outside world, on the hunt for the one thing they most want in life - Lewis wants a new voice, Morgan wants a job and Sasha wants a home.
We meet the charismatic Lewis amongst a room of students watching the world cup, and much like the others he is yelling at the TV screen, but does so with an electronic voice through his communicator. Lewis, who hails from Newcastle, is fed up with his voice and embarks on a personal mission to find a Geordie accent for his communication device, with the help of his friend Rob.
Morgan has been overcoming his speech impediment and won't let it hold him back in his search for gainful employment. For Sasha, the one thing she doesn't want to do after college is return home to live with mum and dad, as we follow her struggle to move into suitable housing.
