총선 지역분석 시리즈: 호남+제주
As we count down to the
April 13th election, we continue our series on regions across
Korea.
In this installment, we break down the latest polling in the nation's southwestern
Jeolla-do Province.
Here's
Park Ji-won with the third report in our four-part series.
Korea's southwestern
Jeolla Provinces and the nation's southern resort island of
Jeju are traditional liberal strongholds.
There are 31 seats up for grabs,
... and that's about 12-percent of all 253
National Assembly seats.
Back in
2012,... the predecessor to the main opposition
Minjoo Party.. took 19 of 22 districts in Jeolla-do.
The conservative ruling
Saenuri Party couldn't even secure a single seat in the region.
But it won't be an easy election for the opposition this time around,... with the minor opposition
People's Party in the picture.
A significant amount of voters in the region,... fed up with the constant feuds within the main opposition party,... are turning away from the Minjoo Party and opting for the liberal newcomer.
Recent opinion polls show that the People's Party is on course to win 16 of the 20 districts in the province,.. with the other four shaping up to be very tight races,.. due mainly to the division on the liberal side,... with some exceptions.
One exception is
Jeonju B district in
North Jeolla Province,... where the ruling party's Chung Woon-chun is in a close contest with candidates from the two opposition parties.
Another neck-and-neck race is in Jeonju C district,... where Minjoo Party lawmaker
Kim Sung-ju is competing with veteran politician and former presidential candidate
Chung Dong-young, who is now on the People's Party ticket.
The gap between the two candidates is just zero-point-three percentage points,... and the poll results keep changing.
In
Gwangju,... the biggest city in the region and known for its democratization movement back in
1980,... candidates from the main opposition party took six out of eight districts four years ago.
But the People's Party is already making a strong showing in the city,... with recent polling suggesting that seven out of eight districts could go to candidates from the new party.
For example,... in Dongnam B district,... current three-term lawmaker
Park Joo-sun,.. who joined the People's Party early this year,... is edging out Minjoo Party lawmaker
Lee Byung-hoon.
On Korea's resort island of Jeju,... the main opposition party has taken every parliamentary seat for the past 12 years.
But that could change this year,... as two out of the three districts are expected to be extremely close races.
