In the theory of Western music, mode (from Latin modus, "measure, standard, manner, way, size, limit of quantity, method") (Powers 2001, Introduction; OED) generally refers to a type of scale, coupled with a set of characteristic melodic behaviours. This use, still the most common in recent years, reflects a tradition dating to the Middle Ages, itself inspired by the theory of ancient Greek music.
Regarding the concept of mode as applied to pitch relationships generally, Harold S. Powers proposed mode as a general term but limited for melody types, which were based on the modal interpretation of ancient Greek octave species called tonos (τόνος) or harmonia (ἁρμονία), with "most of the area between ... being in the domain of mode" (Powers 2001, §I,3). This synthesis between tonus as a church tone and the older meaning associated with an octave species was done by medieval theorists for the Western monodic plainchant tradition (see Hucbald and Aurelian). It is generally assumed that Carolingian theorists imported monastic Octoechos propagated in the patriarchates of Jerusalem (Mar Saba) and Constantinople (Stoudios Monastery) which meant the eight echoi they used for the composition of hymns (e.g., Wellesz 1954, 41 ff.), though direct adaptations of Byzantine chants in the survived Gregorian repertoire are extremely rare.
Mode (Latin: modus meaning "manner, tune, measure, due measure, rhythm, melody") may refer to:
Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and with vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping, and there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "art of the Muses"). In its most general form, the activities describing music as an art form include the production of works of music (songs, tunes, symphonies, and so on), the criticism of music, the study of the history of music, and the aesthetic examination of music. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to. However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound."
Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. It generally derives from observation of, and involves hypothetical speculation about how musicians and composers make music. The term also describes the academic study and analysis of fundamental elements of music such as pitch, rhythm, harmony, and form, and refers to descriptions, concepts, or beliefs related to music. Because of the ever-expanding conception of what constitutes music (see Definition of music), a more inclusive definition could be that music theory is the consideration of any sonic phenomena, including silence, as it relates to music.
The present article is about music theory properly speaking, i.e. about theories, speculations and hypotheses made about the various aspects or music. It describes the elements of music only insofar as they give way to such theories; other informations about these elements will be found in other articles such as Aspect of music and the specific parameters of music described there. Textbooks, especially in the United States of America, often also include under the term "theory" elements of musical acoustics, considerations of musical notation, techniques of (often tonal) composition (Harmony and Counterpoint), etc., which will not be dealt with as such here, but only as they were the subject of theories and hypotheses.
Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger) is a discontinued instant messaging client developed by Microsoft for Windows, Xbox 360, BlackBerry OS, iOS, Java ME, S60 on Symbian OS 9.x, and Zune HD. It connected to the Microsoft Messenger service while also having compatibility with Yahoo! Messenger and Facebook Messenger. The client was first released as MSN Messenger on July 22, 1999, and was marketed under the MSN branding until 2005 when it was rebranded under Windows Live and has since been officially known by its present name, although its previous name was still used colloquially by most of its users. In June 2009, Microsoft reported the service attracted over 330 million active users each month, placing Messenger among the most widely used instant messaging clients in the world.
Following the acquisition of Skype Technologies in May 2011, Microsoft added interoperability between Skype and Microsoft accounts, allowing Skype (which had features unique to its platform and a wider user base) to communicate with Messenger contacts. In 2013, Windows Live Messenger was discontinued and Microsoft began ceasing service to existing clients. The service in China remained active for another 18 months, and ceased operations on October 31, 2014.

Modes are one of the coolest musical concepts to learn. Once you have a grasp on modes you can start expanding your music and go well beyond the usual major and minor scales. Check me out on Patreon if you want to help me make more of these: http://patreon.com/michaelnew UPDATE: Quite a few people have pointed out that the Phrygian mode isn't all that uncommon in certain styles of music, and I was pretty dismissive of both the Phrygian and the Locrian modes in this video. I think I let my own musical biases show through more than they should have, and I'll try to be more careful about that in the future. So... yeah. Sorry. I learned an important lesson though: If you want people to comment on your video, just say something they don't like :)

This video looks at how a lydian mode goes from a fairly meaningless scale into chords, melody, and actual music. This is definitely the most advanced music theory lesson I've uploaded to date (as well as the longest). If you can get through it though you'll be a better musician, have a deep feeling of spiritual enlightenment, and be an inch taller. Seriously though; it's a powerful concept. This is my music theory lesson about modes. Modes are basically the moods of a key, and they are 'activated' by chords or root notes being played over the key. In this video I go over what modes are, what each mode sounds like, the intervals between the notes in the modes, how the modes relate to each other, and how chords bring out the sounds of the modes. Music theory lesson by Andrew Southworth Modes 101
Modes are extremely powerful and yet modes are often overlooked by even the most experienced songwriters. I think that by understanding modes we can begin to recognise how careful placement of chords and melody can help us to invoke different emotions and feelings. Be careful though. Like with any other piece of dry theory, I'm not sure if the best idea when writing a modern song is to sit down and force it into a certain mode unless you intend to experiment. Modes are one tool, and you wouldn't fix a toaster with a spatula. Modes are often used subtly - it is rare to find a modern example of music based solely around one mode (except major or minor). Modes can exist simply as a short phrase or as chords for a particular section, for instance. What's worse is that modes are often overco...
This is a music theory tutorial on a new way to understand the concept of modes in music theory. This is especially helpful if you are somewhat familiar with the concept of modes, but have trouble understanding exactly WHAT they are, where the idea comes from, and how to visualize them.
