Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire. The city lies at the heart of the wider City of Winchester, a local government district, and is located at the western end of the South Downs National Park, along the course of the River Itchen. It is situated 61 miles (98 km) south-west of London and 13.6 miles (21.9 km) from Southampton, its closest city. At the time of the 2011 Census, Winchester had a population of 45,184. The wider City of Winchester district which includes towns such as Alresford and Bishop's Waltham has a population of 116,800
Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum, which in turn developed from an Iron Age oppidum. Winchester's major landmark is Winchester Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, with the distinction of having the longest nave and overall length of all Gothic cathedrals in Europe. The city is home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still to be using its original buildings.

Winchester College
Winchester College is an independent school for boys in the British public school tradition, situated in Winchester, Hampshire, England. It has existed in its present location for over 600 years and claims the longest unbroken history of any school in England (see List of the oldest schools in the United Kingdom). It is the oldest of the original nine English public schools defined by the Clarendon Commission and regulated by the Public Schools Act 1868 and is one of four remaining full boarding independent schools, meaning all pupils are boarders, in the United Kingdom.
Official name
According to its statutes, the school is called in Latin Collegium Sanctae Mariae prope Wintoniam, or Collegium Beatae Mariae Wintoniensis prope Winton, which translates into English as St Mary's College, near Winchester, or The College of the Blessed Mary of Winchester, near Winchester. It is sometimes referred to by pupils, former pupils and others as "Win: Coll:", and is more widely known as just "Winchester".

He taught briefly at Winchester College during 1907-08, during which time he wrote his “Evening Hymn”, which received its first performance in the College chapel. TRANSCRIPT: I'm always good at exams, and I'm happy some of my kids inherited that. It's a great... it's a very useful skill just to be able to sail through exams. My youngest daughter just took her medical boards, and others... all the other young doctors were struggling and apprehensive and she just was not taking it particularly hard and sailing through. So it's something we seem to be born with. So I've been adaptable in that way. And then at Winchester the teachers were wise enough to leave the kids very much alone. We had rather few hours in class and we learned more from each other than we did from the teachers, especially in math and science.
[Q] And you had some fairly able people who made likewise illustrious careers.
Yes, there was a gang of four, which... which I was particularly lucky to be one of, and there was myself and, now, Sir James Lighthill who is a very distinguished aerodynamicist; and there's Christopher and Michael Longuet-Higgins who were brothers. Christopher became a theoretical chemist and Michael Longuet-Higgins is an oceanographer, and all four of us became Fellows of the Royal Society and had distinguished careers. So that was a tremendous piece of luck. We're all very different. No two of us have been doing similar things, but we did have the enormous stimulus of growing up together.

They had a quite decent library; although it was such a barbaric place, the library was good and I could always escape to the library, and so in a way the more barbaric it was, the better the library seemed to be. And so I read a lot of Jules Verne there, and they had a good encyclopaedia there which was actually a wonderful source of knowledge. I remember in the encyclopaedia there I learned about electrons and protons. They had an article about electrons and protons, and I was very frustrated because it turned out... I mean, they had this long article all about electrons and protons they told us everything about electrons and nothing about protons, and I decided right then that I should find out more about protons. I mean it was clear that in fact at that time almost nothing was known about protons, so that was clearly the way to go. So that came very early, that feeling that there was something unknown; that electrons were really to a great extent done and protons clearly were not. Which, of course, was true at that time. So that library had in it, certainly Jules Verne and probably - I don't know whether they had Wells, but certainly I discovered Wells pretty soon afterwards and I read the classic Wells books, Tono-Bungay and The Time Machine and The Island of Doctor Moreau, all these marvelous books which are great as literature as well as being...

Schubert’s lied “Nacht und Träume” (“Night and Dreams”, D. 827) was published in 1825.

Cycle over Hockley Viaduct in to Winchester City Centre
This is my film of the new cycle-route which can be started at the Winchester South Park and Ride carpark down on the Otterbourne Road. Exiting the carpark the path rises to the Otterbourne Road, and goes down to the roundabout, before crossing the mainline railway and offering a view looking down on the recently restored Hockley Viaduct. A steepish drop follows before we travel over the viaduct, dropping to a junction with the Five Bridges Road, and continuing alongside the Itchen Navigation towards Winchester, passing St Catherine's Hill enroute. We then pass the tennis courts by Domum Road, turn left into College Walk, and pass Winchester College along College Street, before entering St Swithun Street and The Close, ending by the Cathedral. It is then a very easy walk to stroll ones...

This is my film of the new cycle-route which can be started at the Winchester South Park and Ride carpark down on the Otterbourne Road.
Exiting the carpark the path rises to the Otterbourne Road, and goes down to the roundabout, before crossing the mainline railway and offering a view looking down on the recently restored Hockley Viaduct. A steepish drop follows before we travel over the viaduct, dropping to a junction with the Five Bridges Road, and continuing alongside the Itchen Navigation towards Winchester, passing St Catherine's Hill enroute.
We then pass the tennis courts by Domum Road, turn left into College Walk, and pass Winchester College along College Street, before entering St Swithun Street and The Close, ending by the Cathedral. It is then a very easy walk to stroll ones bike through the Cathedral ground to the shopping of the City Centre of Winchester.
I have dispensed with the soundtrack to my movie - replacing lovely birdsong of wrens with the Royalty-Free Music of Danosongs.com - because, having cycled 28 miles from Salisbury I found my head-cam would not work, and was forced to do the thing one-handed with camcorder in left hand. That's why there are lapses in camera-work while I try to change gears, and as I did not have a clean ride (note the white-van-man, the cyclist who cut me up, the car reversing in front of me, and the workmen who nearly pole-axed me) I realised when I got home the soundtrack was a string of swear-words! Doh! On the plus-side, there is some lovely scenery and some excellent dog-owners.
However, this is a wonderful cycle-path, and I thoroughly recommend it - you can even park your car at the park and ride and cycle into town to shop or work, how nice!!
