The Lenn Johnston International Singing Contest for One and All! "THE LUCK OF THE IRISH" was composed and first recorded in 1972 by John Lennon. Today the song stands as a reminder of a history that is sometimes forgotten, but is important to know, while we work for peace, compassion and the integrity of Life on Earth. In remembrance of John Lennon and the history he conveyed in this song, Lenn Johnston will incorporate the winners' voices, and also, as they wish, their images, within a music-video recording to be posted online. For consideration, submissions must be entered by 23:59 (11:59pm) GMT April 30, 2014. Recordings must be produced in time with the backing tracks located on the main contest page by clicking the link below. http://tributetojohnlennon.com/?page_id=1125 Contest Instructions Winners will be those who sing with conviction and Irelust, somewhat in tune, and who, while adding their own ornamentation and other personal stylistic characteristics, honor Lennon's Irish-British sailor-type song and its content. All winners will receive a beautiful poster worth US $20.00, personally signed by Tim Biancalana of TributeToJohnLennon.com . The Top Winner will also receive the CD Village Idiom, with songs and poems in the style of John Lennon. No money involved: just good will, wonderful prizes and fun! Tim will announce the winners and celebrate their excellent singing of this Song in late May 2014. What to Do Audio/video record yourself singing to the backing track(s) one or both of the following portions of the song Use any kind of earphones to play the track, so that only you can hear it. 1. The Female Solo parts begin, "If you could keep voices like flowers..." and "If we could make chains with the morning dew..." Note that the original "shamrock" should be "shamrocks"! There may be one or two winners in this Solo category. The Part 1 backing track has a 4-bar intro; while Part 2 has only 2 bars' intro. (If you're male with a changed voice, and you really wish to sing this Solo, you'll have to do it in falsetto, but respectfully!) 2. Anyone may sing the final Chorus, which begins like the first chorus, "If you had the luck of the Irish..." . Listen for the 4-bar intro. Lyrics were occasionally altered in some of John Lennon's recordings; so you may find some discrepancies between the various renditions of this song. Remember that the melody in the final chorus goes up to a high G on the 2nd "luck"! There may be a few or many winners in the Choral category. Fine Print Both the Solo and Choral contests are open to all people: all vocal parts, genders, nationalities, ages and abilities welcome. Adults 18 and older must provide a signed, scanned note approving the online use of their audio and/or video. Those who wish to have only their audio and not images posted online must specify this in writing. Contestants who are under 18 or otherwise under guardianship must email a signed, scanned note from a parent or guardian approving the online use of the performer's audio and/or video recording(s). Gifts will be sent by regular postal mail. There may be a few or many winners in the Choral anywhere in the world, so we will ask for a mailing address. Audio should be at A440 and Tempo 146 bpm.
