Magnificent mountains, unique fynbos vegetation, glorious seascapes, wetlands, vineyards, golden fields, citrus orchards, semi-desert, half a dozen nature conservation areas and the extraordinary bloom of wild flowers in spring - there is much to discover on the South African side of the Cape to Namibia route. There is plenty to do, too: water sports, hiking, 4x4 trails, quad biking, horse riding, bird watching. And each of the little hamlets and villages has its history and cultural heritage and a story to tell. There is much to learn about the early inhabitants who left their mark with rock paintings, the pioneers, the missionaries and not least the adventurers who endured great hardship in their quest to strike it rich.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is 2500 hectares of pristine wilderness that is home to an incredibly diverse plant species known as fynbos. Fynbos forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, which is the smallest of the six floral kingdoms in the world but has proven to be the most diverse with three times the floral diversity of the Amazon Jungle. Fynbos is also highly endemic and the reserve has seven species that cannot be found beyond the gates.
A 4x4 Flower Safari on one of our classic open-top Land Rovers is the best way to take in the 765 different flower species that can be found on the reserve. A specialised guide will make this trip an invigorating one as he/she imparts their knowledge on the intricate symbiotic relationship between the fauna and flora. You can learn things like how many fynbos wildflowers rely on the scorching heat of a fire to germinate its seeds and that the sensuous aromas attract brilliantly coloured birds endemic to this region. The Gondwana Game Reserve that is home to the Big Five. It is situated along South Africa's Garden Route, about a 4-hour drive east of Cape Town near Mossel Bay.
The park is the only Big Five Fynbos reserve in the world – a 1,000-hectare terrain of floral scrubland. David's guide Brian explains:
"Here you will see the Big 5 like the Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino, and the Lion. It is also home to the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra. At the moment, it would be very difficult to see the elephants because it is cold and they seek shelter in the valleys. But when it is warm they come out and people can see them.
There are also cheetahs here, which are also endangered. They are also quite difficult to spot. The Fynbos vegetation supports many of the grazing animals here as well."

Fynbos (/ˈfeɪnbɒs/; Afrikaans pronunciation: [ˈfəinbɒs]) is the natural shrubland or heathland vegetation occurring in a small belt of the Western Cape of South Africa, mainly in winter rainfall coastal and mountainous areas with a Mediterranean climate. The Fynbos ecoregion is within the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome. In fields related to biogeography, fynbos is known for its exceptional degree of biodiversity.
The word fynbos is often confusingly said to mean "fine bush" in Afrikaans, but the sense is as in "gracile", "slender" – scrub as opposed to "bos", which in most contexts means "forest", rather than "bush". Typical fynbos foliage is ericoid rather than fine. The term, in its pre-Afrikaans, Dutch form, "fynbosch", was recorded by Noble as being in casual use in the late 19th century. In the early 20th century John Bews referred to: "South-Western or Cape Region of Macchia or Fynbosch". He said: "In this well-known region where the rain occurs in winter and the summers are more or less dry, the dominant vegetation is of a sclerophyllous type and there is little or no natural grassland, though there are many grasses..." He also refers to a high degree of endemism in the grasses in that region. Elsewhere he speaks of the term as "...applied by the inhabitants of the Cape to any sort of small woodland growth that does not include timber trees"; in the current vernacular, this still is the effective sense of the word. However, in the technical, ecological sense, the constraints are more demanding. In the latter half of the 20th century "fynbos" gained currency as the term for the distinctive vegetation of the southwestern Cape.

You can learn things like how many fynbos wildflowers rely on the scorching heat of a fire to germinate its seeds and that the sensuous aromas attract brilliantly coloured birds endemic to this region. One such bird is the Southern Double-Collared Sunbird that has a vivid red and brilliant blue collar.
Six flower species were discovered on the reserve that were completely new to science; the most famous is the Erica Irregularis that looks like hundreds of tiny church bells hanging in the wind. Many bays and coves with beautiful beaches, in the west along the Atlantic and in the East at the Indian Ocean.
The journey starts in the pittoresc fishing village of Hout Bay with the busy harbour and lively promenade. Substantial amounts of fish are unloaded here every day. Mostly it is snoek or hake, mainly for export to Spain. Behind the fishing boats: the arts and crafts market with items from all over Africa, including diamonds. Boat rides on the bay are quite popular. As a farewell - and a welcome on return - the colourfully dressed street musicians from the Hangklip quarter play and sing their tunes.
Proceeding to the Cape - on the Chapman's Peak Drive - along the Atlantic coast. To the left of the road - wonderful hiking trails into the Table Mountain National Park. The proteas are part of the unique fynbos vegetation. At Chapman's Point the view of Hout Bay is overwhelming. Here starts the most dramatic part of the stretch. Steep rockwalls, narrow curves and gallery tunnels, and to the right the endless blue Atlantic ocean. Behind the last bend a wide view opens. In front lies the wild sandy beach of Noordhoek. One of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa.
Close to the Cape: ostriches at the sea. The Cape of Good Hope is often crowded. Everybody wants to be on the photo. A bit further to the south-east lies the second tip: Cape Point. The funicular starts at the restaurant and drives uphill to the old lighthouse. It's more invigorating though to walk up the mountain. Once arrived one is rewarded with magic panoramic views. To the east the Indian Ocean - to the west the Atlantic - and to the south the rugged tip of the African continent.
Back along the Indian Ocean. To Simon's Town with its pretty Victorian houses and the harbour. A boardwalk leads along the beach to the town's greatest attraction - the penguin colony at Foxy Beach and Boulders Beach. Once threatened by extinction, 3000 breeding pairs of African Penguins are living here nowadays. The beach is protected by huge round granite boulders. Seamed by Milkwood thicket, providing the penguins with an ideal breeding habitat. Swimming is allowed at Boulders Beach. Sometimes people and penguins can be seen together in the clear shallow water.

A Floral Kingdom of Fine Bush
Surrounding the city of Cape Town at the most south-western point of Africa is a region hailed as the worlds hottest hotspot for plant diversity and endemism. Nowhere else on Earth are so many indigenous species concentrated in such a small area.
Its name is Cape Floral Region, and though this temperate bushland makes up less than 0.5% of Africa, it is home to nearly 20% of the continents floral diversity. It is also known as the Fynbos, after an ecosystem unique to the region. Fynbos is Afrikaans for fine bush, and the main vegetation is a collection of evergreens, shrubs and small plants with tough, fine leaves and reeds. Covering an area of 90,000 square kilometres, the Fynbos is home to 9,000 different plant species, a third of them found nowhere else on Earth.
Some of the most spectacular of the plants belong to the protea family. The King Protea, South Africas national flower, is also known as the Honeypot or King Sugar Bush because sugarbirds and sunbirds feed on its flowers. A Floral Kingdom of Fine Bush
Surrounding the city of Cape Town at the most south-western point of Africa is a region hailed as the worlds hottest hotspot for plant diversity and endemism. Nowhere else on Earth are so many indigenous species concentrated in such a small area.
Its name is Cape Floral Region, and though this temperate bushland makes up less than 0.5% of Africa, it is home to nearly 20% of the continents floral diversity. It is also known as the Fynbos, after an ecosystem unique to the region. Fynbos is Afrikaans for fine bush, and the main vegetation is a collection of evergreens, shrubs and small plants with tough, fine leaves and reeds. Covering an area of 90,000 square kilometres, the Fynbos is home to 9,000 different plant species, a third of them found nowhere else on Earth.
Some of the most spectacular of the plants belong to the protea family. The King Protea, South Africas national flower, is also known as the Honeypot or King Sugar Bush because sugarbirds and sunbirds feed on its flowers. Space is a ruthless place. An image captured by the Very Large Telescope in Chile has revealed a cluster of galaxies 65 million light years from Earth — and one of them is in cannibal, swallowing the others. The cannibal galaxy was found in the Fornax cluster, which contains a menagerie of galaxies of a variety of shapes and sizes ... In the middle of Fornax is a beast called NGC 1399, which is a cD galaxy — or cannibal....
