On the morning of April 3, 2017, a loader collided with a freight train in Ottumwa, Iowa. I arrived over an hour after it happened. The city-owned front-end loader went through the Gateway Drive railroad crossing on the west side of Ottumwa into the path of an empty sand train heading north on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Most of the loader was pushed more than a hundred feet, coming to rest on the east side of the tracks. The freight train stopped with the first locomotive across both tracks of the east-west BNSF Railway mainline that passes through Ottumwa. The operator of the loader was taken to the hospital, and was last listed in fair condition.

Close-ups of the lead engine show the right ditch light broken and some hand rails bent. It was said over the radio that two engines would have to be set out.
At 9:34, a reporter is seen talking to an eyewitness. At 10:48, a person is seen inside the wrecked loader. At 15:02, a tow truck arrives at the scene by backing up to the site. This is followed by a few clips from different points in the process of pulling the wreck away from the train.
Finally at 24:58, the train backs up to return to yard. The second unit makes some smoke before the train starts to move. As the train goes away, it reveals that one of the wheels of the loader ended up on the opposite side of the track as the rest of it.

Ottumwa, Iowa
Ottumwa (/əˈtʌmwə/ ə-TUM-wə) is a city in and the county seat of Wapello County, Iowa, United States. The population was 25,023 at the 2010 census. Located in southeastern Iowa, the city is split into northern and southern halves by the Des Moines River.
History
The young town was severely damaged during the Flood of 1851.
In 1857, coal was being mined from the McCready bank, a site along Bear Creek four miles west of Ottumwa. In 1868, Brown and Godfrey opened a drift mine four miles northwest of town. By 1872, Brown and Godfrey employed 300 men and had an annual production of 77,000 tons. In 1880, the Phillips Coal and Mining Company opened a mine two miles northwest of town. In subsequent years, they opened 5 more shafts in the Phillips and Rutledge neighborhoods, just north of Ottumwa. The Phillips number 5 shaft was 140 feet deep, with a 375 horse power steam hoist. By 1889, the state mine inspector’s report listed 15 mine shafts in Ottumwa. In 1914, the Phillips Fuel Company produced over 100,000 tons of coal, ranking among the top 24 coal producers in the state.
