Irene Hunt (May 8, 1907 – May 18, 2001) was an American children's writer known best for historical novels. She was a runner-up for the Newbery Medal for her first book, Across Five Aprils, and won the medal for her second, Up the Road Slowly. For her contribution as a children's writer she was U.S. nominee in 1974 for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest international recognition available to creators of children's books.
Hunt was born to Franklin P. and Sarah Land Hunt on May 8, 1907 in Pontiac, Illinois. The family soon moved to Newton, Illinois, but Franklin died when Hunt was only seven, and the family moved again to be close to Hunt's grandparents. Hunt's childhood was lonely, but she shared a special relationship with her grandfather, he told her stories about his childhood during the Civil War. In Minneapolis she earned her M.A. In Illinois public schools, she was a teacher of Indian and French. Later, she taught psychology at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, but eventually came back to elementary and junior high school to become a director of language arts in Illinois. After she retired in 1969, Hunt devoted her time to writing.
Across Five Aprils is a novel by Irene Hunt, published in 1964 and winner of the 1965 Newbery Honor, set in the Civil War era. Hunt was close to her grandfather who told her stories from his youth, which she incorporated into Across Five Aprils. Across Five Aprils is often considered the first YA novel.
The novel was adapted to screen in 1990 by Kevin Meyer and starred Todd Duffey and Miriam Byrd-Nethery.

Plot: Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa (Antonio Banderas) finds himself without adequate funding to finance his war against the military-run government. He also finds himself at odds with the Americans because of the Hearst media empire's press campaign against him. To counter both of these, he sends emissaries to movie producers to convince them to pay to film his progress and the actual battles. Producer D.W. Griffith (Colm Feore) becomes interested and sends Frank Thayer (Eion Bailey) with a film crew to develop film reels. Thayer becomes horrified and fascinated by the bandit. He finds an enigmatic individual that is both ghoulishly brutal and charmingly captivating. The resulting film became the first feature length movie, introducing scores of Americans to the true horrors of war that they had never personally seen. Thayer sold the studios on making the film despite their concerns that no one would sit through a movie longer than 1 hour by convincing them that they could raise the price of movies to ten cents, doubling the going price at that time.

This is this past year's DI (Dramatic Interpretation) that I did this past year from th National Forensics League, or NFL :) hehe, or Forensics. I thought that i would make it interesting and make a scene out of it like having coffee. This DI is a section from my favorite book Up A Road Slowly by Irene Hunt. Friendship is important to ones life. Wheather you're best friends with someon, or you want to kill the person next to you. Some people don't even know about their friendship with other people. Take for instance Julie Trelling (me) and Aggie Kilpin. Julie doesn't realize about her friendship with Aggie u...

You are my one dimension
Beyond the stars to see
You live in my obsession
and rule my phantasy
All I do is hope and wait
and I pray it's not too late
All I do is hope and wait for you
If only you could come my way
I almost feel your touch
But if only I could say
I fear I love you too much
All I do is hope and wait
and I pray it's not too late
All I do is hope and wait for you, for you
All I do is hope and wait
Cause I feel it's not too late
All I do is hope and wait for you
To be with you
to hold your heart
To be with you
