Featuring Geoge Gershwin (p) Paul Whiteman (Denver 1890, Doylestown 1967) was leader of the best popular band in the history of American popular music. He formed his first dance orchestra in 1918 in San Francisco, then settling in New York in 1920. In that year he also started recording with great success, two of his first recordings, “Whispering” and “Japanese Sandman”, selling over one million copies each. Though his lush and sweet style were very influent and widely imitated, he always loved to feature first class jazz musicians. Notably great horn players like Bix Beiderbecke, Frank Trumbauer, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti and Jack Teagarden. in the mid-late twenties the Whiteman orchestra featured, among others, a vocal trio called “The Rhythm Boys”: Harry Barris, Al Rynker (Mildred Bailey’s brother) and the then unknown Bing Crosby who soon became one of its more valuable properties. In 1924 Whiteman commissioned George Gershwin to write “Rhapsody in Blue” that was premiered in a now legendary concert at the Aeolian Hall in New York, with the composer himself as featured pianist. That launched the so called “Symphonic Jazz” style. Since this collection is chiefly devoted to the dance band leader side of the Paul Whiteman personality, but we couldn’t afford omit the “Rhapsody”, we have decided to put this opus at the end of it, completely out of chronological order.
