On Thursday afternoon, Spring Watch participants at the Għadira Nature Reserve witnessed masked men hunting illegally inside the Foresta 2000 Bird Sanctuary, taking advantage of the 1pm ALE shift handover during which time hardly any police are present in the countryside.
This is not the first time that such incidents have been reported, but this time round Spring Watch volunteers were able to film and photograph events as they unfolded and have passed on video evidence identifying the individuals to the ALE.
BirdLife Malta has questioned the ability of the Maltese government and enforcement authorities to properly control and limit the spring hunting season in accordance with its derogation of the EU Birds Directive that allows spring hunting of turtles dove and quail.
BirdLife Malta says that it has witnessed widespread illegal hunting in the first week of the season and the number of hunters and amount of shooting are not compatible with a strictly enforced spring hunting season.

Video ‘Mapping of Bird Flight Paths’ Project
Red Eléctrica has won the European Business Award for the Environment 2014-15 in the Business and Biodiversity category with this project. One of our favorite spots that offers an extraordinary view can be found on the west coast of Ireland--the Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs are almost vertical and their sheer drop into the heaving Atlantic ocean is a haven for sea birds. We were QRV on 5 and 6 of September 2015 from 80 to 10m SSB, activating the SVFF-067 but also participating in the Field Day, the MAIN purpose of it is to exercise-prepare youself on EMERGENCY !

On Thursday afternoon, Spring Watch participants at the Għadira Nature Reserve witnessed masked men hunting illegally inside the Foresta 2000 Bird Sanctuary, taking advantage of the 1pm ALE shift handover during which time hardly any police are present in the countryside.
This is not the first time that such incidents have been reported, but this time round Spring Watch volunteers were able to film and photograph events as they unfolded and have passed on video evidence identifying the individuals to the ALE.
BirdLife Malta has questioned the ability of the Maltese government and enforcement authorities to properly control and limit the spring hunting season in accordance with its derogation of the EU Birds Directive that allows spring hunting of turtles dove and quail.
BirdLife Malta says that it has witnessed widespread illegal hunting in the first week of the season and the number of hunters and amount of shooting are not compatible with a strictly enforced spring hunting season.

In 2009 Viking Energy Partnership applied for consent to construct and operate a wind farm development in central Shetland. They submitted an Environmental Statement which evaluated the effect of the proposed development on birds, including whimbrel. This was later amended to predict that whimbrel numbers would decline if action was not taken. A number of non-governmental organisations, including the appellant, objected to the proposed development, inter alia on the basis of the impact it would have on whimbrel. In a letter dated 4 April 2012 the Scottish Ministers granted consent under s.36 of the Electricity Act 1989 for the construction and operation of a wind farm in central Shetland. Considering the impact on whimbrel, the Ministers deemed that any impact on numbers that could not be avoided by conservation measures was outweighed by the benefits of the project. The appellant petitioned for judicial review of this decision challenging the alleged failure of the Ministers to take proper account of the EU Birds Directive 2009/147/EC which relates to maintaining populations of protected migratory birds. The challenge was upheld by the Lord Ordinary on other grounds but she indicated that, if necessary, she would have upheld the challenge under the Directive. The Inner House unanimously allowed the Ministers’ appeal.
The Supreme Court unanimously dismisses the appeal.

Evidence of illegalities witnessed by the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) during the open season and beyond prove the government's spring hunting derogation failed to meet even the 'strict supervision' test, besides other conditions under the Birds Directive.
Over 1300 illegalities were recorded during BirdLife Maltas three-week Spring Watch camp, from 11th April until May 1. Around 260 illegal hunting and trapping incidents were recorded by BirdLife Malta and CABS teams alone outside the permitted times during the spring hunting derogation period between 24 and 30 April.
In addition to these figures, while the police said that only 16 licenses were issued in Malta (7 for Gozo), there were over 640 observed cases of hunting with 1305 shots heard only in Malta during the mornings of the derogation period. This led to the conclusion that many hunters without the necessary licenses under the derogation were actively targeting migratory birds.
The illegalities recorded include hunting from roof tops, the use of illegally modified shotguns in over 100 cases, targeting of protected species as well as active trapping. Poachers were also observed using watch out points and radio communication to alert each other and avoid detection.
Both organisations stressed that these figures were only an indication of the presence of illegal hunting and not representative of the actual scale of illegalities. The data presented was limited to what was witnessed by teams in Malta as there was no presence in Gozo. Moreover, during the three week period, BirdLife Malta had only two to six teams covering a limited area on any given day, while CABS had only two teams in Malta for 10 days.
Despite all their good intentions, the police could only deal with a fraction of the illegal hunting incidents. Some of the poachers might have been encouraged by the low penalties that have been given to illegal hunters and trappers in the past years. Apprehending the culprits is only the first step, said CABS spokesman Axel Hirschfeld.
BirdLife Malta and CABS drew attention to the fact that illegalities were regularly witnessed at almost every observation post, despite the presence of birdwatchers and, in some cases, even the police. A selection of the illegalities caught on camera was presented as evidence at a joint press conference held in Valletta today.

Its been three days since Ramakka's family in Hesaraghatta had any chicken dish on the table.The post-Dasara non-vegetarian feasting had to be sacrificed and restricted to an allvegetarian meal,thanks to the local gram panchayats order to all poultry shops in the area to close down,following the bird flu scare.
Though they didnt show any signs of panic,residents of Hesaraghatta said they are taking precautions to avoid any untoward situation.
All chicken shops have been closed in our village since Wednesday.Panchayat members informed us that some turkeys had died at the neighbouring Central Poultry Development Organization last week due to bird flu (hakki jwara) and it is likely to spread to other poultry birds, said Ramakka.
A few houses away stays N Sridhar,owner of Sri Durga Chicken Centre.Sridhar is the sole breadwinner of a family of six and has lost business worth about Rs 10,000 in three days.
I sell 50kg-100 kg of chicken a day.On Sundays,the sale goes up to 100kg.But this week,we were told to keep our shops shut till October 31.I earn about Rs 1,500-Rs 3,000 every day,just enough to feed my family and meet other expenses.If we close shop for a week,my monthly budget goes awry.I'm worried about the upcoming festivals,especially Diwali,when we need a lot of money, said Sridhar.
Naganna,a chicken shop owner,said there was no fear in the village about the disease.
As a precautionary measure,were not selling or eating chicken or any other poultry item.We dont know the truth behind this sudden scare.We have no option but to follow the panchayat directive, he said.
There havent been any bird deaths or any other symptoms of the disease as yet.People are panicking after the panchayat order.We are more fearful of losing our livelihood than falling sick.Shutting shops for a week will hit us badly as we earn the most during Dasara and Diwali, said Balaji (name changed),a chicken shop owner.

It follows that if new evidence has appeared about the potential consequences of the EURATOM Basic Safety Directive, Under Article 20 (in the original 1996 version Article 6) all practices involving radiation exposure have to be re-justified. It is a legal requirement. What is proposed, therefore, is that all individuals resident in or citizens of a EU member state country, and all NGOs based in such countries, petition the European Parliament to require a re-justification of all radiation producing practices covered by the Euratom Basic Safety Standards Directive in any of its forms in the light of the new scientific evidence of health risks.
This new evidence is appended to the Petition as an Appendix and petitioners may ask for the evidence to be presented in any scientific discussion by members of the European Committee on Radiation Risk www.euradcom.org , or the International Committee on Nuclear Justice www.nuclearjustice.org .

Busby talks here from a playground in Stockholm about the cover-up of the Fukushima contamination and the failure of the Japanese government to act for the children who are suffering the same health problems as those exposed to the Chernobyl contamination. Together with some Japanese colleagues he has set up a Foundation: www.cbfcf.org to provide regular independent scientific expertise, to advise parents, to independently assess contamination and to give children access to radionuclide blocking supplements. His expert advice is firstly to evacuate the children to uncontaminated areas.
