The California Office of Emergency Services has issued an earthquake advisory for Southern California following a swarm of small quakes in the region earlier this week. The advisory warned residents and officials in Ventura, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, Kern and Imperial counties that there was a greater possibility of a major earthquake through Oct. 4 "California is earthquake country. We must always be prepared and not let our guard down," said Director Mark Ghilarducci. "The threat of an earthquake on the San Andreas Fault hasn't gone away, so this is another important opportunity for us to revisit our emergency plans.

Amidst the nationwide focus on the drought in California, a major environmental and public health concern has once again been set in the shadow for the law makers of Sacramento. But for the Salton Sea - California’s largest lake and home to more than 425 bird species on the pacific flyway, time is running out. Time is ticking until 2017, when water allocations in accordance with the Quantification Settlement Agreement (2003) are significantly reduced and directly affect the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea is already more than 25% saltier than the Pacific Ocean, and with reduced water and rising salinity this region will no longer be able to support environmental life. To make matters worse, as the water level reduces and exposes years of agricultural runoff, giant dust storms have the potential to plague areas as far as Los Angeles, San Diego, and Northern Mexico. This surrounding region already has some of the worst rates of asthma in the state, and the socioeconomic suppressed immigrant working communities are suffering and have nowhere to move. This issue is not just about international bird populations and the environment, its about social justice, and rights to clean air. California is running out of time after decades of political indecisiveness and costly studies, something has to be done now to “Save Our Sea”.

Almost 200 earthquakes were recorded in Southern California's Salton Sea in roughly a 24-hour period, geologists said Tuesday. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quakes that began Monday and persisted throughout the day. The strongest quake had a magnitude of 4.3, officials said. Most of the earthquakes were small but three had a magnitude of 4.0 or greater and nine of at least 3.0, the USGS said. Seismic activity near the Salton Sea is not uncommon, since the 350-square mile body of water is located near numerous fault lines, including the notorious San Andreas.

Salton Sea
The Salton Sea is a shallow, saline, endorheic rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault, predominantly in California's Imperial and Coachella valleys.
The lake occupies the lowest elevations of the Salton Sink in the Colorado Desert of Imperial and Riverside counties in Southern California. Its surface is 234.0 ft (71.3 m) below sea level. The deepest point of the sea is 5 ft (1.5 m) higher than the lowest point of Death Valley. The sea is fed by the New, Whitewater, and Alamo rivers, as well as agricultural runoff, drainage systems, and creeks.
Over millions of years the Colorado River has flowed into the Imperial Valley and deposited soil (creating fertile farmland) and building up the terrain constantly changing the course of the river. For the next thousands of years the river has flowed into and out of the valley alternately creating a freshwater lake, an increasingly saline lake, and a dry desert basin, depending on river flows and the balance between inflow and evaporative loss. The cycle of filling has been about every 400-500 years and has repeated itself many times. The latest natural cycle occurred around 1600-1700 as remembered by Native Americans who talked with the first settlers. Fish traps still exist at many locations and it is evident that the Native Americans would move the traps depending upon the cycle.

This stream is showing the past 48 hours of USGS reported earthquakes + the last 50 EMSC reported earthquakes internationally.
No voice in this video unless a large earthquake strikes.
Marker height off the globe = depth into the Earth.
The feed may show double earthquakes in some locations due to both USGS + EMSC agencies reporting the events.
When an earthquake strikes, you will hear a rumble, ding, and a bell toll. The bell will toll the number of times = to the earthquake which occurs. (example : M4.0 will ring 4 times).
The most recent earthquake has a green placemark / flag on it.

The California Office of Emergency Services has issued an earthquake advisory for Southern California following a swarm of small quakes in the region earlier this week. The advisory warned residents and officials in Ventura, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, Kern and Imperial counties that there was a greater possibility of a major earthquake through Oct. 4 "California is earthquake country. We must always be prepared and not let our guard down," said Director Mark Ghilarducci. "The threat of an earthquake on the San Andreas Fault hasn't gone away, so this is another important opportunity for us to revisit our emergency plans.

Amidst the nationwide focus on the drought in California, a major environmental and public health concern has once again been set in the shadow for the law makers of Sacramento. But for the Salton Sea - California’s largest lake and home to more than 425 bird species on the pacific flyway, time is running out. Time is ticking until 2017, when water allocations in accordance with the Quantification Settlement Agreement (2003) are significantly reduced and directly affect the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea is already more than 25% saltier than the Pacific Ocean, and with reduced water and rising salinity this region will no longer be able to support environmental life. To make matters worse, as the water level reduces and exposes years of agricultural runoff, giant dust storms have the potential to plague areas as far as Los Angeles, San Diego, and Northern Mexico. This surrounding region already has some of the worst rates of asthma in the state, and the socioeconomic suppressed immigrant working communities are suffering and have nowhere to move. This issue is not just about international bird populations and the environment, its about social justice, and rights to clean air. California is running out of time after decades of political indecisiveness and costly studies, something has to be done now to “Save Our Sea”.

Most of the earthquakes were small but three had a magnitude of 4.0 or greater and nine of at least 3.0, the USGS said. Seismic activity near the Salton Sea is not uncommon, since the 350-square mile body of water is located near numerous fault lines, including the notorious San Andreas.

Salton Sea Fishing 2014
Just finished a long trip to the Salton Sea. Fascinating history with this fertile and smelly lake. Interestingly, the visitor center claims the lake is "cleaner than Lake Tahoe" at the time of my visit. The heavy fertilizer runoff from the surrounding farms and fairly stagnant water really make the place poorly appealing. However, it is loaded with tilapia! I didn't catch any large ones but I saw several 2-3lb fish landed by others. Just finished a long trip to the Salton Sea. Fascinating history with this fertile and smelly lake. Interestingly, the visitor center claims the lake is "cleaner than Lake Tahoe" at the time of my visit. The heavy fertilizer runoff from the surrounding farms and fairly stagnant water really make the place poorly appealing. However, it is loaded with tilapia! I didn't catch any large ones but I saw several 2-3lb fish landed by others.

Learn to conduct your own incredible adventures in Southern California (or anywhere in the world) ► http://www.bicycletouringpro.com
I recently traveled east from the Los Angeles area and out into the deserts of Southern California with my friends Mike and Sophie in the camper van they are currently building up. During three short days together we traveled to Joshua Tree National Park, the Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain, Slab City, East Jesus, the Algodones Dunes and Anza-Borrego State Park. Once in Anza-Borrego, Mike and Sophie said goodbye and I camped out in the desert for two days while waiting for my aunt and uncle to arrive in their Volkswagon Westfalia campervan. After my aunt and uncle showed up in Anza-Borrego, we spent two nights camping in the park before driving back to their home on Coronado island near the city of San Diego. As you can see by watching this video, I had quite a good adventure in just a few short days - proving that you don't need to go on a big, long trip in order to have a memorable experience.

Fall through spring is the best time to visit Borrego Springs, which is the Anza Borrego desert town center. This is when temperatures dip from summer highs of 120 down to a comfortable 70 to 80 degrees. Spring is when the Anza Borrego flowers carpet the desert in a field of colorful blooms. Anza Borrego wildflowers include such species as desert dandeloin, desert mallow, white sage, lupine and Indian paintbrush.
Anza Borrego camping is free throughout the park! If you want a more pampering experience, stay in one of the hotels or RV resorts in Borrego Springs. You can enjoy a round of golf beneath the Santa Rosa mountains, enjoy some catch-and-release fishing on the Springs at Borrego golf course, or go swimming in their 85-degree pool and hot mineral springs.
When you arrive, check out the visitors center, which is located just above town. This is also where you'll find Palm Canyon, one of the main Anza Borrego campgrounds with hookups. The Anza Borrego Visitors Center is a great place to learn about the native flora and fauna, take in a geology lesson, or enjoy a short stroll to the desert pupfish pond. These endangered fish can live in water three times as salty as the ocean and up to 120 degrees in heat!
Borrego Palm Canyon is one of the area's most popular hikes, clocking in at 3 miles round-trip. Allow roughly 2 hours for the journey, which begins at the Visitor Center and ends at a natural palm oasis. If you're lucky, you may spot some of the desert's native bighorn sheep.
On the hike to Alma Wash, you can check out the rare elephant trees, which were discovered here in 1937.
One of the most unique sights in Borrego Springs are the metal sculptures, which are scattered throughout the valley. Designed by artist Ricardo Breceda, the sculptures are located along 3 square miles of Galleta Meadows Estate, which sits along Borrego Springs Road. Highlights include a field of farm workers, a stranded desert Jeep and an awesome 350-foot serpent that travels beneath the highway. Many of these larger-than-life sculptures resemble the prehistoric creatures that once roamed Borrego Valley, ranging from giant sloths and camels to wooly Mammoths and saber-toothed tigers. Outside the chamber of commerce, you'll find a replica of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista De Anza, who blazed the trail from Mexico to San Francisco in 1775.
Cycling is a great way to see the Anza Borrego desert, and many rentals are available in town. If you have a four-wheel drive, head out to popular locations like Ocotillo Wells, Blair Valley, Split Mountain and Sheep Canyon.
The desert's remote location makes it an ideal spot for stargazing. In fact, Borrego Springs hosts dozens of astronomy events throughout the year, and was California's first International Dark Sky community.

On the hike to Alma Wash, you can check out the rare elephant trees, which were discovered here in 1937.
One of the most unique sights in Borrego Springs are the metal sculptures, which are scattered throughout the valley. Designed by artist Ricardo Breceda, the sculptures are located along 3 square miles of Galleta Meadows Estate, which sits along Borrego Springs Road. Highlights include a field of farm workers, a stranded desert Jeep and an awesome 350-foot serpent that travels beneath the highway. Many of these larger-than-life sculptures resemble the prehistoric creatures that once roamed Borrego Valley, ranging from giant sloths and camels to wooly Mammoths and saber-toothed tigers. Outside the chamber of commerce, you'll find a replica of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista De Anza, who blazed the trail from Mexico to San Francisco in 1775.
Cycling is a great way to see the Anza Borrego desert, and many rentals are available in town. If you have a four-wheel drive, head out to popular locations like Ocotillo Wells, Blair Valley, Split Mountain and Sheep Canyon.
The desert's remote location makes it an ideal spot for stargazing. In fact, Borrego Springs hosts dozens of astronomy events throughout the year, and was California's first International Dark Sky community.
