Rough Trade may refer to:
Wayne Michael Coyne (born January 13, 1961) is an American musician. He is the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the band the Flaming Lips.
Coyne was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, the son of Thomas Coyne and Dolores "Dolly" Jackson. The fifth of six children, Coyne moved with his family from Pittsburgh's Troy Hill neighborhood to Oklahoma in early 1961. Coyne grew up in Oklahoma City. Coyne preferred listening to music and playing pickup football. He, his sister, and his brothers dubbed themselves "The Fearless Freaks" for their brutal backyard football games. Tommy Coyne, Coyne's older brother, described the games as a "semi-civilized gang fight."
In 1977, while in high school, Coyne began working as a fry cook for a Long John Silver's restaurant in Oklahoma City. During his second year of employment, there was a rash of robberies in Oklahoma City. The restaurant was robbed and Coyne and other employees were held at gunpoint and forced to lie on the ground. Coyne was certain he was going to die. The assistant manager couldn't open the restaurant's safe, however, and the robbers eventually fled the scene. Coyne believes "this is really how you die...one minute you're just cooking up someone's order of french fries and the next minute you're laying on the floor and they blow your brains out. There's no music, there's no significance, it's just random." Coyne continued working at Long John Silver's until 1990.

A music mecca and ambassador for independent record stores, Rough Trade finds its roots in Notting Hill circa 1976. The label, Rough Trade Records, signed The Smiths in the early days and now with a repertoire including Arcade Fire, Belle & Sebastian, The Strokes and Warpaint, Rough Trade have kept the music industry and aficionados on their toes over the years. Crane.tv met Stephen Godfroy, director of Rough Trade shops, in the flagship store, Rough Trade East, near London's Bricklane to hear about Rough Trade's unique relationship with the music industry and why Godfroy feels the store genuinely touches people. www.roughtrade.com

I have attended many mighty Jah Shaka Sound System dances. The Jah Shaka Sound System was pretty much the go to dance for people that might not have felt comfortable at Fatman, Coxsone or many other lesser known roots sound system dances, or indeed, well known ragga sound systems. Nasty Love, Stone Love, Kilimanjaro or Unity Hi-Fi dances. I attended many Fatman Sound System dances, in fact a couple of those dances Fatman would be clashing with Jah Shaka from across the hall. Those two heavyweight sound systems were, by far, my favorites for a bass heavy night out. Jah Shaka's many boxes of 'specials' would rotate all night long on the single turntable that he always used, with little in the way of speech distraction, but much distraction from the HH Echo Chamber and siren boxes th...
Record boss said we would be a smash
Yeah, go straight to Number One
He talked of hits and tours and lots of cash And all the time it wasn't on
And I believed every word was true
Yeah I swallowed every line
I believed every word he said
And I didn't find out in time
We were betrayed, betrayed, betrayed,
Betrayed, betrayed by rough trade lies
We quit our jobs and got all set to fly
Your promises had us riding high
But it's dirty rough tough trade we find
"Yeah we agreed, but you hadn't signed
Sorry, son, gonna have to throw you
Our lawyers say we don't even know you
Music is money, kids are no-account fools
You trade in us, we get betrayed by you
And you're sitting there in your London office
Snug and warm
And you think that you've won but
Just remember this is just round one
We're gonna do it our way
We're gonna make it on our own
Because we've found people to trust
People who put music first
Why can't you tell us the truth?
