La soul moderne, le rhythm’n’blues respectueux d’une certaine tradition bref le groove de qualité se porte plutôt bien… Et le premier album de Curtis Harding – le bien nommé "Soul Power" – fait entrer un nouvel outsider flamboyant dans une famille réunissant déjà Aloe Blacc, Mayer Hawthorne, Jamie Lidell, Myron & E, Nicole Willis, Lady, Nick Waterhouse, Raphael Saadiq, Alice Russell et quelques autres. Originaire d’Atlanta, ancien choriste pour le rappeur Cee-Lo Green et proche de Cole Alexander des Black Lips, Harding épate dès son premier opus, tant l’éclectisme qu’il offre ici, comme l’aisance qu’il a à passer d’une ballade de lover à un titre nettement plus up tempo et funky voire à de la soul sudiste, est bluffante. Et même si les références comme les clins d’œil sont légions, Curtis Harding impose déjà le talent de sa plume et l’originalité de sa voix. Une voix qui connait sur le bout des ongles l’héritage de Curtis Mayfield, Shuggie Otis, Willie Hutch et bien d’autres. Des nombreuses références qui ne font pas pour autant de ce jeune soul brother un suiveur de seconde zone. Bien au contraire. Il écoute du rap, de la country, du rock, de la soul, du blues et 150.000 autres choses, et œuvre également avec Cole Alexander au sein de Night Sun, groupe de soul garage psychédélique. Bref le bonhomme sait d’où il vient et, avec "Soul Power", montre où il va. On le suit les yeux fermés ! Enfin, histoire d’ajouter une touche supplémentaire de glamour et de hype à cette belle affaire, Hedi Slimane, styliste à la tête de la création chez Yves Saint Laurent, a photographié Harding pour la pochette de son album et l’a embarqué dans son Saint Laurent Music Projet… Rencontre avec un touche-à-tout doué qui vient d’entrer dans l’arène pour y rester un certain temps...
